I saw a 15 minute narrated trailer on Bioshock and the guy's all look at our revolutionary AI. They show a robot walking around trying to find a little girl. Then the little girl comes out and you can 'scare' her. The robot warns you, blah blah.
How is this revolutionary in any regard and why is Bioshock getting so much 'OMG it's amazing!?' coverage.
Additionally, it talks about how the environments are different. Looks like a bunch of corridors to me.
Splain?
This is PC and 360 so I'm putting the thread here...

What the demo doesn't get across is the scope. It's not a linear corridor crawler like Doom. Supposedly you have access to most of the facility right from the start. And the AI sort of operates on a faction system so the actions that you take with dealing with a particular creature or group of creatures actually has much larger consequences taken as a whole.
Did you play System Shock 2? Same guys, same style, and they are taking the gameplay design they used there to the next step.

- The setting, the whole world of Rapture, sounds incredibly fascinating.
- The characters in the game offer more than "random NPC" - creepy little girls who drink blood, huge "big daddies" (if I recall correctly) that protect them, crazed out 30's chicks who crawl on the ceiling...
- It isn't WW2-themed.
There you go.

System Shock 2 was a masterpiece. Except for 'The Many' intestinal rectum level which I never finished.

Then I don't see how you can't be psyched for this. It looks like SS2 with a little more freedom right off the bat, and a cool, less generic setting.

Just the art-deco inspired visual style alone is enough for me to get excited.

We're putting a stake through the heart of all those FPS cliches. Watch out for that security camera!!!
But yeah, if you liked System Shock 2, there's your big deal right there. System Shock 2 in an underwater Jules Verne inspired environment with giant crazy robots and demented little girls.

I'm with ATB on this one ... nothing in the video seemed mindblowing about the NPCs or the enemies. The baddies just seemed like more stock foes, just of the game's world to fit in with the setting.

Hmm, 60's underseas habitat based on the principles of Ayn Rand seems pretty damn original for the genre to me. Same with the unlikely pair of a little girl and her hulking protector that only attacks if the girl is threatened.

The gun is made from a soup can for crying out loud. Other things are made from fan engines and movie projectors strapped together. Seeing it in person, the world felt really alive. This video does a terrible job of conveying that. (And Ken sounded very tired...)

There are plenty of original things about the video. But calling out all the other FPS's only makes your own cliches stand out more. Sneak around the camera so the security robots don't come after you! Make sure you have the right kind of ammo to kill the.... uh... well you need a certain kind of ammo to kill a woman in a dress quickly, it appears. None of that would really matter if he hadn't gone to lengths to point out that they were avoiding FPS cliches - staking them violently, in fact - only to engage in them enthusiastically at some points. Also, Ayn Rand sucks. (but I think the game will be good)

Judging by the outcome of the habitat, I'm not sure that Ken Levine would disagree.

OK, I think I can nail down why the buzz on this game: It isn't entirely about the game. The group of people behind it have never made a 'bad' game. They have made a few OMFG!GREAT! games.
Just what I think.

They showed part of trailer on X-play that was just insane. It had a first person view of a guy trying to catch one of the little girls, after which he gets attacked by one of the huge robots. The thing actually drills right through his hand, blood flying everwhere, and he's screaming. He then injects himself with some kind of serum, after which his arm decays and killer bees fly out and attack the robot. In the end he gets impaled through the back and chest by another robot. Definitely made it look intriguing, in a very disturbing kind of way.

Sounds like the cinematic trailer. Definitely awesome, but it's a prerendered cinematic done by Blur Studios. It's the X06 video on GameTrailers if anyone wants to see.
