Why couldn't this unpacking happen before it unlocked? I am sure they could still prevent us from playing it... They should call it "pre-downloading" instead of preloading. smile

If it weren't so cold out tonight I'd run out to pick it up. All these stellar reviews have me moderately hyped up. Oh well, I have the rest of the week off to play.  icon_wink

You guys gotta check out the benchmark tool, old school command prompt....

My i5-HD3000 laptop benchmarks at average FPS of 13 at 720p, which was actually surprising

Pretty until you play spot the bad texture.   Or in that case, the GOOD texture.  icon_biggrin

Check point only save earns the game a pretty bad black mark from me.

L9, do you have everything set on ultra? Because while the rosebushes while I'm playing aren't high detail, they definitely look better than that.

Played about two hours so far.   They really draw out the intro, don't they? Graphics are maxed out and the game looks gorgeous.   Gameplay is exactly what you would expect, only brighter.   So far,  I've seen the usual progression of upgrades,  with one exception.   When you get the chance to buy a vigor early on,  I suggest doing so.   I have not come across it yet.   Otherwise it's the same types of things you'd see in either BS1 or 2.  Riding the sky rails is fun and is a great way to dispatch foes.   Felt a bit like Batman jumping back and forth

If there is one complaint,  it's that the game has been very linear.

Is anyone else having a problem with things getting stuck?  The first kinetoscope video worked fine, but the second and third wouldn't stop playing until I hit the skip button.  Also, the shotgun game in the Fairgrounds seems really messed up.  Sometimes it ends normally, but more often I get stuck in the gun view and can't get out of it without restarting from the last checkpoint.

Have not had either of those problems and I've viewed a number of kinoscopes and played the shotgun game once.

Is everyone getting this for PC rather than console?  I'm always torn.  I know it will look better on the PC but I can't resell PC games once I've beaten them.

For me the mouse sensitivity seems a little wonky. I've turned acceleration off, it moves too slowly turned all the way down but it goes up way too quickly from there to where my view flies all over the place with the slightest movement. Think I got it settled down but sheesh.

Interesting. I wonder if it plays better with a gamepad?

I'm playing it on Xbox and I really wish I could experience it on PC. The games art style is fantastic but a lot of the textures are pretty bad on console. The frame rate isn't too hot in places either. If you have a good PC, do yourself a favor and eat the $30 bucks you won't get back on what is likely to be the best game this year.

Another plus to the checkpoint saves suck. Maybe someone will figure out a way to implement them.

So far I'm not feeling the love. Maybe it is the extended opening, it is almost like they are saying 'hey, we can have NPC's that are not behind glass walls' but the whole city feels so artificial. Walk by a npc, hear their line or two, then move on.

The love will come, good sir. I agree with you, however, that there is very little innovation in the game. It's not entirely different from the original Bioshock, save a much better feel to the combat. I'm not sure the aging gen of consoles they had to keep in mind within development could produce much more than the typical system of Npc behavior they have in place.

Elizabeth, however, is very well done within that limitation, Imo.

Yep, just doubled checked and everything is set to ultra.  Certain things just seem to have really crappy textures.

Another shot of the rare and blurry Pixel Roses.  Open the image full screen for the full effect.

I find that foliage in games has always been pretty terrible up close.  It looks fine from far away, but the illusion is ruined when you walk up close.

Anyways, liking the game game so far.  It is pretty much Bioshock in the sky and with better gunplay, but I'm in it more to hear the tale that Ken Levine has spun.

Only played through the first section with the first bit of gunfights, but, man, I'm loving this.  Gorgeousness abounds.  Little touches really make it feel special.
Spoiler for Hiden:
When I heard the voices singing a barbershop quartet version of the Beach Boys song (that Bowie covered), I grinned, but when they came sailing into view, I watched the whole thing and was loving it.

As others have mentioned, the fighting is very improved.  It mostly feels just right, although I was a little concerned while trying to go through one of the carnival games.  So far, that seems to be a fluke.

There are some texture issues on the 360, to (there was one bit on a door in a cutscene that was especially low res), but for the most part, it's dazzling.  The lighting is just incredible.  Seeing the city for the first time was more impressive than the original, IMO.  And the Welcome Center was both incredible to see and really drove home the thematic element of the game.

The religious/political scenario is one I'm looking forward to deflating over time, as well.  It seems this world is more pointed in its satire.

But there's the added curiosity of what might really be going on.  There certainly are some big question marks thrown up.

Speaking of that, I'm also enjoying the Rosencrantz and Guildenstern-esque man and woman who have appeared twice already (at least I think it's them both at the beginning and doing the heads/tails thing).

There just seems to be more going on in this world, and I'm definitely looking forward to exploring it.

Yeah it just makes it weirder when you come across a bad texture.  Everything looks great until you run into that one random terrible wall texture that makes you go WTF.

looks like there are indeed console commands to quicksave for the PC version; unfortunately no one seems to know how to enable the console.  since this is the Unreal engine the old trick of disabling the startup logos is still easy.

I tried disabling Bloom via one of the ini files but it didn't seem to do anything.

I didn't have alternative turned on but I was curious what it would do so I just tried turning it on. Doing so broke even more textures!  The door texture next to where I was standing wouldn't have looked out of place in a 10 year old game.
