Well, IGN's review is out: You Will Believe a City Can Fly - 9.4

Perhaps more importantly: Due to the embargo, Kotaku has posted their review of IGN's review.

This really...really...bothers me.  A lot.  The notion of street dates prevents stores that are selling the game from being screwed by having larger stores beat them to the punch.  It's not fair to a smaller company when Best Buy gets the game 4 days earlier than everyone else.  (or in the case of this example, more than 10 days) This is the opposite of how things work in the press world.  IGN gets the whole shebang, lock stock, and barrel while the rest of us wait.  If the usual bullshit holds true we'll receive the game with less than 24 hours to complete it and write our review, get it cleaned up, add graphics, build a feature for it, and then launch it at ~9am the morning of release.  Unfair hardly covers it.

If it makes you feel better (probably not) I always wait for several reviews before purchasing.    So IGN isn't going to get all of my attention or clicks by a long shot.

Yep, I also got my key from the AMD video card bundle. Pre loading as well.

Not surprised it's that big. Bioshock games tend to have a lot of non-repeating content, especially if they plan to have more story and dialog between the two main characters.

5/5 stars from Joystiq

Yeah, I think I'll be staying off media sites for a while to prevent spoilers. This is actually one of the few games I'm going in with only the basic media exposure to.

Some reviews are using images that have interesting implications, I can't help speculate on them. I should know better.

Holy hell, the current metascore is 96, with 29 reviews counted, all of them positive! I was wait-and-see with this game, but now I've got it preloaded on Steam. smile

Is this on pace to be the highest rated game of the generation? I'm cautiously keeping expectations in check seeing as most big budget games are on a 9-10 scale with critics.

Nah, it's got several other games above it, with Grand Theft Auto IV at the top. Even the original Bioshock is a step above already.

I doubt it.  Ken Levine didn't work on Bioshock 2 (If I remember correctly), and I haven't read anything that suggests the two worlds are related.

One thing I noticed watching the gametrailers review is that they were playing the PC version of the game.  I wonder how the console version looks.

nVidia just put out new drivers for a performance boost while playing.

Quote
Featuring performance optimizations of up to 41% in BioShock Infinite, and 71% in Tomb Raider, 314.22 WHQL is an essential update for all GeForce GTX systems. Other highlights include single-GPU and SLI performance improvements of up to 30% in Civilization V, 22% in Sniper Elite V2, and 12% in Sleeping Dogs.

I doubt I'll upgrade unless things are horrible.  I skipped their 'essential' driver update for Tomb Raider and it ran just fine using nearly year old drivers.

From what I've gathered, the console versions look pretty good due to a fantastic art design but suffer from low rez textures similar to those in Dishonored. They also struggle with the frame rate in certain sections --primarily the latter section of the game.

I wish I had a PC capable of running it. Im not a graphics whore by any means but a low framerate really annoys me in a FPS.

IIRC Bioshock was based in 1960,while Bioshock 2 was 10 years after the opening cutscene which happened while Rapture was still up and running...however Bioshock Infinite is set in early 1910s

I would guess you could come across things in Infinite that you think,"so that's where they got that idea from" etc,but i would think it wouldn't matter storywise.

FWIW,Bioshock 2 is still a decent game though and worth playing,i heard the Minerva's Den DLC is even better(which i have but haven't got around to it yet)

Actually yes, it checks your hard drive and won't start the game unless a finished Bioshock 2 file is detected.

want a challenge right from the start?

Eurogamer

Quote
All you need to access the game's rock hard 1999 Mode is to enter the famous Konami code on the game's main menu. That's: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B and A.

PlayStation 3 players should substitute the last two buttons with O and X.

1999 Mode is usually only unlocked after completing the game.

Amusingly, it's exactly how BioShock Infinite creator previously promised the mode wouldn't be unlocked, Game Informer, which discovered this method, reported.

The developer then said it was "talking about" such a method, but had not confirmed its inclusion.

"Probably what we're going to do is you'll only be able to get to that mode through some kind of unlock," Levine said last year. "Not unlock in the game through 'left, right, up, down' that kind of thing."

1999 Mode is so named because it harks back to the more hardcore shooters of the nineties. 1999 was also the year that BioShock developer Irrational's System Shock 2 released.

"One of the reasons 1999 Mode is so much more difficult than any other setting is that dying often uses up all your money and then you can't respawn," Tom Bramwell wrote in Eurogamer's 10/10 BioShock Infinite review.

"You're sent back to the main menu and have to resume from your last autosave prior to the section where you died."

A new infographic released by Irrational via its Twitter account revealed that the game features over 10,000 lines of dialogue, a third of which belongs to main characters Booker and Elizabeth.

1999 mode doesn't sound like much fun considering there is no way to manually save your progress. Hopefully auto save checkpoints are generously interspersed through out.

Well, my enjoyment of the previous games, a $50 Amazon gift card I had burning a hole in my money clip, along with the universally positive reviews have swayed me. Preloading on Steam now. May even stay up late to play tonight.
