I heard it's complete and they're starting the first expansion: Pleasure Town

People want to guess Freedom Force, SWAT 4 or System Shock followups but given none of those were blockbusters (beloved sure, but not big sellers), and Irrational apparently doesn't own the rights to them, it's presumably something out of left field.

While I stand by my guess back in July  icon_razz, we should know in about 44 minutes at Irrational's Icarus site what the game is...

http://www.whatisicarus.com/

The animation suggests the game is about...
A) A curvy version of Pong
B) Pretzels
C) Bow ties
D) A slot-car figure 8 racing track

Well, the Infinity Animation seems to be down now. The suspense builds... paranoid

Hmm, the trailer doesn't seem to want to run past about the 1:35 mark for me.  confused

So far it's...
Spoiler for Hiden:
An underwater sequence replete with a guy in a deep sea diving suit (I guess maybe it was a Big Daddy, but would they go to all this trouble for another Bioshock game?), then it switches to a scene with a miniaturized "World's Fair" diorama/encased model and it gets knocked off a table, and then you're up in the air amongst airships and hot air balloons. I got the impression it's a first person adventure game of sorts. But I don't know if the sequences represent gameplay or cinematics.
If this is just another Bioshock expansion, I'll feel pretty dumb.  disgust

Bioshock: Infinite

Quote
BioShock Infinite is a first-person shooter currently in development at Irrational Games, the studio behind the original BioShock (which sold over 4 million units worldwide). Set in 1912, BioShock Infinite introduces an entirely new narrative and gameplay experience that lifts players out of the familiar confines of Rapture and rockets them to Columbia, an immense city in the sky.
Former Pinkerton agent Booker DeWitt has been sent to rescue Elizabeth, a young woman imprisoned in Columbia since childhood. Booker develops a relationship with Elizabeth, augmenting his abilities with hers so the pair may escape from a city that is literally falling from the sky. DeWitt must learn to fight foes in high-speed Sky-Line battles, engage in combat both indoors and amongst the clouds, and harness the power of dozens of new weapons and abilities.

Sigh, so I was right afterall.  deadhorse

You'd think they'd at least host the trailer on servers strong enough to withstand a lot of pounding, if they were going to hype it that much.

Now I'm more excited about their "not really X-COM" X-COM game...

This reminds me, there's an interesting (but not too well reviewed) game on Steam where you man turrets on battling airships (not blimps, but something more like dirigibles with suspended platforms below them).

I think this is the curse of success. The Irrational games I want more of don't sell enough (including System Shock 2, Freedom Force and SWAT 4), but their first console-as-well-as-PC game (BioShock) did, so it kind of figures they'd keep going to that design well.

So I almost feel like I should've hoped Bioshock didn't sell well either, which would force them to do something really different again. But I don't want them to shut down, and if they'd produced another underselling game, who knows what might have happened? So I guess I don't really wish that. icon_smile I'm just kind of tired of the FPS genre as a whole (even when they don't make me motion sick) and was hoping they'd be using BioShock's financial success to do something different.

I guess that's as pointless as wishing Bungie would get leeway to do something non-Halo, or that Infinity Ward would do something without "Call of Duty" in the title.  icon_razz

Whine whine whine. I'm all for this.

Sorry, but the new setting is pretty damn awesome, and Irrational knows how to make games.

Remember that this is still the type of game Irrational wants to make, going all the way back to System Shock 2.

The name sucks a bit, but I guess they needed Bioshock in there to make sure people knew the pedigree of the game.

Sounds like you need to get with the times.  Or find a new hobby, haha.

I didn't think Irrational would stoop to truly and excessively over-hyping what's essentially a BioShock expansion. imho, that's what we're irked about.

I've bought everything Irrational's ever made, so I hardly need you fanbois lecturing me about their games.

A Bioshock expansion? WTF?

If it was just called Infinite, would you have a problem? If not, why the heck are you complaining about something so meaningless as the title?

Bioshock is one of the best games of this entire generation. The same developer is making a new game, in a similar style to System Shock 2 and Bioshock. How are people not excited?!

I think it's more this fact from the article I linked to in the OP:

Quote
Fancy taking a guess at Ken Levine and co are making at Irrational? Ring the studio.

The developer wants you to phone in and try guess its current project via a special number.

Seems to be US-only, though. If you are in the US, have a punt on 617-302-7805.

Might be a bit difficult, mind, considering itís meant to be a new IP.

The new title is set for a reveal at some point this year, although when exactly is unknown.

people were expecting something other than a new Bioshock game.

Just Bioshock? A new Bioshock game from Ken Levine is cause for celebration, not "meh".

Again, if it had been announced as "Infinite, a new game from the creators of Bioshock and System Shock 2" would you have been disappointed?

As I noted in the PC version of this thread, I' sure the game will be fine, and for lovers of Bioshock, probably brilliant. Ken Levine is a great developer, and he has an awesome track record.

As I tried to convey, my feelings on this was because of the reveal debacle, not so much the game itself. A lot of people were thinking it might be System Shock 3 or a new Xcom game (those rumours have persisted for a few years now), and it turns out its the third of the series Bioshock. For me, thats "meh" considering what it could have been, and the hype surrounding it. I dont expect everyone to agree, but at least try and understand where I come from.
