You can see the news item over at No Mutants Allowed, which they gleamed from some SEC filing.

Basically Bethesda paid Interplay $5.75 million for the IP and Interplay retains the rights to develop an MMO based on the license over the next few years with a percentage going back to Bethesda.

This could probably go in Console or PC Gaming, but since Console seems to get higher traffic/responses, it sits here.

Yea, they gleaned what was known about a year ago.  Fallout 3 is in full production and *may* be seen this holiday season, but I'd greater suspect a Spring 08 release.

They have been licensing the IP and developing a Fallout game, but now they officially own and control it for current and future products.

I'm really interested to see what Bethesda can do with this. I'm hoping for the best.

Frankly, all this means is that interplay is in such dire straights they had to get rid of one of their last and biggest IPs.

I think it was just time for the IP to be passed on rather than going to the grave with Interplay.

Exactly. Interplay has been dead for years in my mind. Too bad, really - they made some classic games in decades past.

It's gonna be oblivion esque.

Despite that, I may give it a whirl.

Though I guess I should actually play through FO2.

Rather, finish my replay of FO1...I got as far as exiting the first cave.

Why we haven't seen news of a Battlechess remake is beyond me.

Having put a bit of time into STALKER I think a post-apocalyptic/Fallout setting with first person sounds great.

Interestingly, Ike was describing STALKER to me and I thought that it did sound kind of Fall Outy.  Hmm. Color me piqued!

STALKER is in a post-apocalyptic world of sorts and it is cool, but to me, it is not similar to the world of Fallout.

It's not similar to the world of fallout, but it does have sort of a fallout-esque style to it.

It has the same bleak and desperate feeling of Fallout, along with the same feeling of seeing abandoned homes and buildings, along with characters and factions that are not so larger than life, but are still eerie because of the way the bleak setting has gotten to them.

I remain pessimistic.

It would be nice to be proven wrong, however...

So do many other medieval, futuristic, sci-fi, etc games. The STALKER world is just not really like a post-apocalyptic post-nuclear war devastated planet earth. Its creepy and wierd because it takes place in a tiny anomoly outside the site of the Chernobyl disaster. Fallout is an entire world of devastastion, ghost towns, underground bunkers, nuclear fallout, etc. It may have surface similarities, but on a much smaller, and much less tragic scale. Only the area around Chernobyl is like that in the small world of Stalker. In Fallout, everywhere you go is a desolate wasteland, one that makes most of the lush steppe of STALKER seem nice.
