Ars Technica gave the game a good review.

Joystiq was pretty positive too.  I'll definitely be grabbing this.  I forgot that XBLA is weird and releases on Wednesdays, so I was sad to see the demo wasn't available this morning.   crybaby

Destructiod's review doesn't like it, but it's written by Jim Sterling.  I think he's a huge jackass, hate almost everything he does, and disagree with almost every review he's ever written, so I think I'm not worried about what he has to say about the game.

I hadn't heard anything about this (I rarely hear much about XBLA titles unless someone begins a discussion here), and I have to say it looks rather intriguing.  I love the narration in the trailer and hope that same voice is what the review refers to as the constant narration throughout the game.  I don't think I'd ever tire of hearing the narrator's voice.

I might have to check the trial out.  I love surprising gems like this.  Limbo, while short, still remains one of my all-time favorite, most surprising games on XBLA.  I never saw it coming.  Perhaps Bastion could earn a place in that category.

I can talk at length about a game I like.  But when asked whether I’d recommend a game, suddenly it’s 100% trickier.  A recommendation has to take into account the recommendee, which is exactly twice as many people to manage as when I normally talk about a game.  But then there is the occasional game I would recommend without hesitation.  Bastion is one such game.  There is no man, woman, or child to whom I wouldn’t recommend Bastion, which is available this week on Xbox Live.  Just consider your Microsoft spacebucks account 1200 points poorer.

I'm sold.

I'm surprised people haven't heard about this game. It's a fairly unique take on the action rpg genre. The devs have an entire series at giantbomb talking about the game and stuff throughout their development.

The art direction is beyond awesome too.

IGN gave it a 9/10 and Gamespot gave it 8.5/10.

Did you see the place you go to to increase the difficulty?  There's supposed to be some place where you can make monsters have more health, do more damage, etc. in exchange for bonuses like increased XP.

I don't think there is a manual adjustment, but there are supposed to be idols you can find that have these kinds of effects (tougher enemies, regenerating health, all with the benefit of more XP).  I'm not sure if they have to be activated at your "home" where you can upgrade weapons and such, but I've read in a few reviews that there are things you can pick up to increase difficulty and improve XP earnings.

From a review in USA Today:

Quote
As players bring cores back to the Bastion, they rebuild key structures that expand their weapon choices and boost their abilities in combat. The Arsenal lets players change weapon loadouts, while the Forge upgrades weapons with items found in various levels. There's also the Distillery, where players purchase drinks such as Werewhiskey to bolster their battle skills, and a Shrine that lets players invoke gods that increase the game's difficulty.

...

Once players wrap up the 6-8 hour campaign, there's a New Games Plus option which lets them restart the campaign with all their experience and gear. Combine that with the ability to invoke several gods in the Shrine and players can create a brutally difficult game.

Exactly.  The Forum Effect is not limited to actual impressions.  It can also result from positive buzz.  After I do my daily dose of PCAT review I'm going to log on and check out the trial, but I'm anticipating a purchase of the full game.

This one.  No spoilers but he goes into great depth about the weapons.

Played about 2 hours so far and it's really good.  The animation and voice work is phenomenal, the narrator is awesome and has some great lines.
Maybe a spoiler:
Spoiler for Hiden:
On the first level I purposely ran off the edge and the narrator said that I fell to my death, then when I resurrected said not really he was only joking.

The combat is a good mix of melee and ranged and you upgrade your weapons how you see fit.  You can also make the game harder if you want by using Idols so there is a ton of customization
in the game.  There are challenge modes for each weapon and they are puzzle like and very fun.  There is also a New Game Plus mode as well so a lot of replay value.

My only gripe is that there is a lot of loading screens they only occur when you change levels but each one takes about 5-7 seconds which is not too bad but I wish it was optimized a little more.

Also the music is really good and has some great instrumental songs plus one vocal song that is awesome.

you obviously hate good things.

joking aside, the music is probably the most surprising thing about this game. it's amazingly good. I played up to the point of getting 4 buildings so roughly 2 hours.

I would say 15 minutes really isn't enough time to properly judge it. This game does a fantastic job of continually building on itself.  I'm a good several hours in and am still getting new stuff, having new mechanics introduced, etc.  It might not be for you, but you owe it to yourself to give it a bit more time; this game is FANTASTIC.

I think the narrator is hilarious, that scene included!

joke spoilers
Spoiler for Hiden:
  • "And then he just raged for a while" when I first tested out destroying random objects
  • the aforementioned "and then he fell to his doom.  Nah just kidding"
  • "He never did like Joey the Snitch" after I accidentally destroyed a petrified person
  • "He got the feeling he should be hurrying" when I was just standing there not realizing the ground was starting to fall out from behind me

Narration like this would be perfect for a humorous adventure game like Space Quest or Monkey Island, especially if the protagonist occasionally protested at the way events were being told.

So... are we not supposed to be destroying the "petrified" people? They're already dead and it seems to be the only way to find out who they were.  icon_neutral

I love the event-driven narration in this, what a cool idea and it seems they've done a great job implementing it.  thumbsup

Bill Harris also seems to love the game

Quote
Bastion (360)
This was one of my most-anticipated games of the year, based on E3 previews and videos, and man, it didn't disappoint. The game world is beautiful and vibrantly colored, the animation is seamless, and the music is first-rate. Also first-rate is the gameplay, which is thoughtful without being unnecessarily complex--an ideal balance.

Of particular note are the story and the narration. The writing, by itself, is outstanding, but the voice acting, if possible, is even better, and they are a perfect complement to each other. The original hook for the game was that the narration would be dynamic enough to comment on whatever the player was doing at the time. That sounds like a difficult feature to pull off, but they did, and it works perfectly. It's an ingenious idea, and it adds a new dimension that makes the game world even more vivid.

This is a game that never breaks immersion. There are no rough patches that take you back to the real world for a moment or two, no questions to ask about why something wasn't finished or doesn't look right. It's a fully-contained escape from this world, and it's a wonderful experience. If you love the experience of playing games, of entering another world, then you must play Bastion.

In two words: utterly charming.
