After how sturdy the Gamecube was, this is surprising. But I've searched around and it appears to be a pretty common issue.  I want to at least finish Mario Galaxy (I'm at 89 stars), but I have a feeling it's going in for repairs.  I've only had it since June frown

That buzzing is no doubt due to all those bees in Mario Galaxy, for Peach's sake find a way to let them out!

Seriously, sorry to here you've got a bad drive. I haven't heard of anyone else encountering this yet, but I remember my brother in-law had a defective drive on his GameCube. I'd recommend calling Nintendo Support about it and see if they'll cover it.
