I'm a pretty big fan of Xenosaga but even I think that sounds ludicrous.

Review scores don't interest me that much, but the rumors stick out. Rez and Every Extend Extra on XBox live Arcade sign me up.

Since the source is EGM I wouldn't give an ounce of credibility to any one of those reviews.
Their 3 independent review system is absolutely useless IMHO. I mean how useful is it to the reader to be presented with 3 different rankings with as much as 45% spread between them!?

Cases in point:

Quote
Shining Force Exa: 6, 7, 4
One reviewer thinks it's a good game while another thinks it's regurgitated dog food!

Quote
After Burner: Black Falcon: 6.5, 2, 5.5
One reviewer things this game is of fair quality while another thinks it's a steaming pile of crap!

I'm fine with 3 independent reviews- having scores all over the map just means the game can be decisive (ie love it or hate it) and you need to read the review to get an idea of where you might fall.

However, I think EGMs (and 1Ups by extension) reviews are crap.  I greatly enjoy their web content (podcasts, 1Up Show) and their "personalities" but it has also given me a window to realize how petty, biased, and arbitrary they are and I think they've become so wrapped up in their little community that they are intentionally giving some ratings just to see what kind of sparks they can generate.  I used to think that professional reviewers would try and be be professional, unbiased, and platform agnostic but, alas, that little idea has been thoroughly shattered.

The numbers themselves mean nothing, but if you read the reviews I'd imagine you can see why one was rated higher than the other.  Three opinions are better than one, given they are well reasoned.

*note that I have no idea if they are well reasoned or not, I've not read EGM in 5 years or so.

I would say if they released it just a few weeks or months after release then yes. But it has been a while!  It will be like a whole new game, IMO.

Yeah, I don't see a problem with it either.  I traded in the game long ago out of single player boredom, but online co-op would cause me to buy it again.

I'm hoping Armored Core is better than the reviews are claiming it to be. Every single review I've read has blasted the game, but people on various forums who have played the demo have been posting that it is a very solid game.

I'm not sure which way to go on this one, and unfortunately I can't grab the demo to decide for myself.

6.5, 7.5, and 8 for Virtua Tennis 3 doesn't seem too bad coming from a magazine that usually gives out low scores.

You can see at least one of the R&C scans if you go to the Gamefaqs board for the game.  Not the best looking scan though so it's probably worth waiting for direct feed stuff that should be hitting soon or seeing the issue in person.  However, the new gadget highlighted in the scan is pure Insomniac awesomeness.

Sorry but any reviewer wether its games, music, TV, or movies who says they aren't ever biased is lying their ass off. Your just seeing that the people at 1UP are just like other gamers. I wouldn't think you would try and say that other sites like Gamespot, IGN, or Gamespy would be any different.

Looks like the Wii remote version of SSX didn't work out quite so well. It sounded like it could be cool.

I didn't say they were any different.  But there are degrees of bias and most of the Ziff Davis guys come off as heavily biased which is not what I expect of professionals.   "Just like other gamers" ain't good enough- there are thousands of "other gamers" on message boards all over the internet so I expect that someone who actually does it for a living to bring *something* to the table different than any random Joe on a messageboard and it certainly ain't their writing.

The text reviews are the problem though. I admittedly also haven't picked up a copy of EGM for some time; too poor a publication for the effort IMHO. From what I reacall only 1 of the reviewers are given any amount of printed space. The other 2 reviewers only give very brief paragraphs that aren't really informative. They certainly don't say enough to explain a very low score, that's for sure.

And EGM is well known to be extremely bias. I've seen messages in forums for years on many sites with people stating this. I also seem to recall a minor conflict of interest scandal involving EGM and it's onwers from a few years back, but I'm sure I'd never be able to find the link.

I agree with Kevin completely about this. There is a huge difference between a review with a modicum of objectivity and the "dare-to-be-edgy" reviews we are seeing so frequently from the magazines mentioned.
