If I buy a game on Steam, does that mean it's been updated to run on modern OS'?

For example, I'm interested in DL'ing Jagged Alliance 2.  Since it's available on steam, does that mean it will run on Win7 or is there some other tomfoolery I would have to go through to get it going?

Is this true of all games on steam? They have been updated and will run without..hackery/replicating outdated OS environs?

Thanks, swamis.

I think for the most part they are updated to work on the current OS AS OF THE TIME THEY WERE RELEASED TO STEAM. slywink

Meaning that if you bought something released on steam during windows XP, I don't know that it is guaranteed to work on Win 7.

Not 100% sure though.

Games support are listed on their page. For the most part, games will work on the most current version of windows, though YMMV.

I've had problems getting Armed and Dangerous working on W8beta. That being said, BETA.... so I don't know if that is the problem.

When in doubt, visit the Steam forums of said game. No doubt there will be threads talking about how Game X isn't working in OS Y.

Yeah, I got burned by buying Jedi Knight I. It was built for Win95 and there are all these hoops you have to jump through to get it to work every single time you start it up. Do your homework and you should be fine.

Now, GOG, on the other hand... smile

Older games on steam are pretty much hit and miss.  Some people have no issues running those games, some people do.  I haven't run into too many issues with them.

I too would recommend GOG for the older games though if available.  Part of their selling point is that older games are set up to run on modern systems with few hassles.
