you're not the tower defender this time, but the attacker.  you choose the units, choose the paths, and take out the defenses for money for more cannon fodder.  RPS has a decent write up of the game.

So I'm grabbing this tonight along with Bioshock 2 so my bank doesn't freak out over a small online purchase and put a hold on my account (again), so I should have impressions up later.

I'm past the first episode and now onto tokyo and wow the difficulty ramps up massively. Well worth the purchase imho

it's fun, but I wish there was a way to speed up vehicles.  maybe there is, I haven't unlocked all the commands yet.  I called it a night after I got my arse handed to me on the second half of the second map, right after you get the probe.  the way I read the map I thought it showed which direction the turrets would fire in, and was dismayed when the ones I thought could only face north swiveled 180 degrees and proceeded to wipe out my troops as they were surrounded.

Two things I can tell that are going to get old (unless something changes):

1) the rifts that appear when trying to follow the most obvious route.
2) the attacks from the air.  right now there is no way to avoid them and they feel like they are in there to do just enough damage to make you use up repair packs.

oh, and whatever happened to normal difficulty?  there's casual, advanced and one other higher setting.  is casual the new normal?

Those "air attacks" are your supply drops. They leave behind more repair packs.

I'd agree re the routing but that is part of the strategy imho. Also I would say treat Bagdad as the tutorial so it is very easy and very clear - it gets far harder and more challenging

Shift key to move your units faster - but the 'tutorial' covers that a little further on from where you are

I think they just call them lightning strikes.  you'll be moving along and suddenly a blob of lightning falls on your guys.

That only happens on the first mission (so far, I'm on Mission 3). It's to force you to learn how to use the Repair packs.

I'm on mission 10 so I have a reasonable idea of the game. The first level Bagdad (up to level 6) was a lot of fun, relatively straight forward and not to much strategy except at the end. Tokyo is a different matter missions are way bigger and they add triggers into the pot so if I trigger a sentry gun then further down the way a timer starts ticking.

However its great fun, certainly easily worth the price of admission and the story whilst not A+++ level is good. I'll be getting any dlc that comes out on this title. My only bug bear is you can't save part way in a mission so whilst I am playing you can restart to the previous check point but if I need to leave I have to redo the mission. But its not a huge issue for me as I am enjoying replaying the missions

The mayhem mode that opens up after completing Baghdad is quite fun. Loving the game so far. Worth $9 for sure.

I guess I never ran across this thread. I've been playing this on iMac for 6 months on and off and it is great fun. Difficult as you progress though, as it should.. I liked it do much I got it for iPhone as well when it was on sale awhile back. Pretty kick ass game, with pretty kickass graphics!

Enjoying this on PSN (free with plus now), but only just made it to Tokyo so the game hasn't fully taken off. Was also playing on casual :-P. Expecting it to start ramping up soon or I'll switch difficulty levels.
