Actually, ammo crates can be taken by anyone and take up a weapon slot for 3 drops. It's usually a good idea to have the special weapons class carry at least 1 ammo crate so he can fill up his autogun/minigun ammo (autogun ammo uses up a whole crate).

There's no trick with parasite infestation. Just keep dropping medkit boxes until they're all healed away, and it takes time (have to get rid of the yellow part of the health bar).  Later on you will unlock the medic gun, which does a better job of healing parasites and anything else, but can't be reloaded.

I guess it is the panic that makes you drop more boxes than necessary.

Anyone found the 2x damage bonus thing good?

It's useful, but not that much.

The only situations where you would theoretically need them is swarms of those shield bugs coming at you. Only problem is that the 2X damage doesn't help against that and you still have to get behind them.

It's useful to quickly clear out some known hotspots, but it's just too situational.

What's worse, that extra damage also includes friendly fire, and any situation where you would potentially need 2X damage you probably will be shooting all over the place.

I dabbled a bit this morning in offline practice mode. While I generally like mini-games (pipeline game for the Tech), I'm waaaay out of practice on pipe line puzzle games.  icon_razz

Is there any sort of game lobby or matchmaking system, or is it more trying to invite folks off your Steam friends list?

I guess my other question -- I'll know soon enough once I get to do some co-op -- can you have more than one squad type on a co-op team? I assume they haven't made it so you require a certain class to get by an obstacle since that could suck if someone drops off your team or gets disconnected.

Does anyone know of a text file or manual that lists the default key mappings? I really want to configure this for my Nostromo keypad, but it's a pain to to get the key settings from the in-game keyboard configuration screen. On another note; I've tried playing it with my 360 controller and everythings worked very well with 1 caveat, you can't control the distance of grenade throws and specialist drops. That unfortunately rules it out, which is a shame because movement and main armament aiming was far better with the controller.

Found a problem that more should be aware of, this game REALLY taxes cpu and gpu. My laptop gets ultra hot, not a good thing in this weather.

Some people report 100 degrees Celsius.

Hmmm, maybe Valve's way to make money will be to market special "Alien Swarm Coolers" for CPUs and GPUs. Only $29.99 each!

Many thanks for the links Blackjack. I've already created my own 360controller_PC.cfg file based on a posting in the Steam forms. Currently my gun aim is set correctly to the right stick, so unlike the complaints from the poster on the blackcat form I can move backwards while shooting forward, sideways and shoot opposite direction, etc. Unfortunately nothing seems to allow you to free scroll the aim with the right stick like you can with a mouse. I've only been using the 1st of the console commands that was listed in one of the posts in the blackcat thread, so I'll give the other 2 a try.

Quote
exec 360controller_PC.cfg
asw_ground_secondary 0
bind "JOY4" "asw_InvLast"

I really have no idea what those latter 2 command do.  icon_confused I already had that list of console commands, so I'll do some further checking into it. I'm surprised there's no key mapping list anywhere, but since the game is free maybe the devs are hoping fans will create one.

What's your handle? I'm BlackjackGT, feel free to add me on Steam friends list. I certainly hope to be on tonight, maybe some time after 9 p.m. EST.

I can't guarantee I'm any more competent than a PUG fella on Steam, but I'll be nicer I bet.  icon_smile

I'm on now. Give me your poor, your tired, your Alien Swarm invites, oh please.  icon_smile

I guess it's telling all the folks I added as friends when playing Alien Breed Impact seem to be playing this now.

I joined the group but nobody much is on.

I seem stuck between a rock and a hard place. The missions I try to set up require at least two players. I tried joining umpteen public games but I either get stuck at an hour glass or the connection drops. I've checked my firewall and it seems to have exceptions set up for the game and the dedicated server. I guess it's no worse than Alien Breed Impact in terms of co-op reliability.  icon_neutral

Is there some trick to joining a game in progress? I managed to join one as spectator. Clicked every key I could think of. SOmeone else ended up joining the game instead.  icon_confused

Also, I'm not black, not even brown....ffs....(my character's design). Oh well.....details.

OK finally got to play. It's fun when it works. It's almost too complicated for my tastes. I don't quite understand the Sentry constructing/deconstructing process, or a lot of other things right now but hopefully that'll sink in with time.

There's a little menu (Z key) of pre-recorded voices, but it doesn't seem to have integrated voice chat.

I really don't get the rules of the game. It's obvious that there's friendly AI (as there's a single player mode) yet you can't have the AI fill in empty slots in multiplayer.

Who thought that was a good idea?

Who thought that was a good idea?
If a player drops during the game, it does seem to fill in the slot with an AI player (or maybe it only does that when the mission requires a certain class?). But in the group I was in (the player healer was replaced by Faith AI), the AI healer seemed useless and didn't use the heal capsule stuff at all.

I had a pretty good time when I could join a game successfully.

I have a problem though with missions requiring a certain weapon or class. My last group got all but one "biomass" (which require flamethrowers, nothing else works), but the guy with the flamethrower ran out of ammo (there's maybe one lone flamer ammo in the level). So we finished about 99.9% of the mission and simply had no way to complete it.  disgust The mockery was that the mission had about 20 fire extinguishers lying around (needed for ONE fire, afik), and seemed to have exactly one flamethrower ammo canister lying around.  icon_confused

Certain things don't seem to be made clear enough, like the healer can only drop his/her heal capsule X number of times and poof, that's it. I also spend a lot of time completely out of ammo (unlike Alien Breed Impact, which maybe had too much ammo in lockers and lying around, this game's really sparse with it and you don't have an infininite ammo backup pistol to rely on).

And while friendly fire certainly forces some strategy, people seem to constantly be damaging each other (it was a problem with grenades in ABI, but not really the weapons) without meaning to. Maybe some friendly fire % adjustment, like in Killing Floor, might be useful.

I really did have a blast when I wasn't running into these various little gripes.

Alien Swarm is AWESOME fun... if you can get a group together.

That was my worry.  Can it be played with only two players?
Now that I can speak from experience:
-You can start a game with two players, but I think as Destructor found, it won't let you fill empty slots with AI players when starting a mission up.
-My experience was that if say, 4 players started and one then left, the game would fill the slot with an AI-bot of that departed player's type named after the class-character name (the healer Faith etc.).

-Keep in mind most missions require at least one of a specified class for completion. What sucks about that is if you need a Tech to complete a mission, and your team only has one -- if your Tech teammate dies, the mission ends right there.  icon_neutral
So if the mission requires a certain specialist, or a certain weapon (flamethrowers for Biomass targets), your team probably should have 2 of the required class, or at least 2 people should equip the required weapon. Otherwise, it's easy to basically get screwed in terms of completing the mission. I can get used to all that but I'm not a real big fan of "puzzle" type requirements of "if you don't have this, then it's over - or if you don't have that, we won't let you complete the mission."  icon_neutral

-It seems like you can join a game to spectate, and, if you wait around, join the next mission/map if the group decides to continue. I wasn't able to figure out any way to "drop in" to a game in progress and actually join the team (even if they had a spot open). It may be possible, I just didn't see anything in keyboard or other options menus to suggest it is.

for free!  it sounds kinda like Alien Breed Impact; I'd feel really dumb if I paid for that game if Alien Swarm is the same gameplay wise  icon_twisted  Tongue
As far as all the Alien Breed Impact bashing, I still find ABI a funner game in a few respects:
-ABI to me is more of a pure adrenaline rush with its claustrophobic environments, and it's often over-the-top streams of enemies. I've compared it to arcade classics like Smash TV, Total Carnage and Robotron. I wouldn't draw that comparison with Alien Swarm, based on my current experience. Pacing is different, and the enemies are often tougher but AS doesn't constantly throw the kitchen sink at you and force you to empty your ammo (at least that's been my Easy-Normal experience so far).

-Ammo is plentiful (maybe too plentiful), and you can frequently buy and swap weapons at the in-level stores. In Alien Swarm, I and my teammates were constantly running out of ammo last night on all the various primary weapons.
-For better or worse, you don't have to "think too much" in ABI. You don't have to worry about being screwed because your Tech player died (mission over) or you can't find any ammo for the particular weapon you need to finish off an objective.
-It has integrated voice chat which Alien Swarm inexplicably (for a Source engine game) doesn't appear to have.
-From a control standpoint, Alien Swarm's overhead view is no doubt simpler but I did like the various dramatic camera angles and zooms in ABI.
-I love ABI's sound effects, and I haven't found AS's quite as visceral or fun.

However, I do like and prefer Alien Swarm in many ways (beyond it being free and the SDK getting released, and its class-basedness):
-When I've been able to get in a co-op game it's been far more reliable than ABI's, and I haven't seen issues like teammates getting dropped
-Lots of amazing (and I guess sometimes GPU/CPU melting) visual effects
-The wider environments are more conducive to co-op play whether 2, 3 or 4 players.
-Lots of crazy boss-type monsters to fight and that reward some teamwork
-Many more weapons and toys to play with.
-I like the Killing Floor-type (to some extent) leveling for yourself, and the light RPG-like stats for each class. Thus there is real reward for playing a lot whether you've already done the maps or not.
-While the co-op matchmaking is far from perfect, it's a helluva better than ABI's borked up co-op matchmaking

Some bandwidth gobbling screenshots...

The MP matchmaking screen. It seems a bit like L4D2, I couldn't really see a way to join a specific game when there's say 3 of a certain type available. You just Join.

I like that there are 2 characters of each class with some differing stats.

Set up screen. I find it's best to wait until everyone else has clicked Ready before I decide on a class. Though it seems like you can still change your mind about anything while in Ready mode.

I caught a tip that the maps are "drawable," and got carried away  icon_smile

In action. Just remember the "health gizmo" is limited-use.

You can unlock various goodies as you level up a character type.

Actually, you're just leveling up, period. XP goes into a general pool, it does not go towards any specific character. All that leveling up does is unlock new gear choices, most of which are available to all character types.

Ah, OK, thanks for clearing that up.

I have to say I'm still confused on many things in the game, but I will figure things out.  icon_smile

While I have a lot of GTers on my Steam friends list, I think many use a different nick than they do here, which often leaves me befuddled on finding folks from here. I did join the fledgling OO/GT group for this, fwiw, just didn't see many online (maybe 2-3).

This isn't so much the case with the weapons, though ammo is obviously a factor. If only one person has a flamethrower, that's fine. If he dies, you can pick up his flamethrower.

Apparently either nobody (like me) realizes it has voice chat or nobody else has headsets. I played 3 games yesterday and nobody said a word.  confused (afik my voice setup is fine) I swear I didn't see a voice-hotkey listed in keyboard options, but I guess it's in there somewhere.

Though I guess most people I hear on voice chat in say, Killing Floor, are willfully obnoxious or have anger management issues. So perhaps we should just keep the voice comm hotkey a secret between us.   banned Anyway, thanks for clearing that up. icon_smile

Our group last night (which spent probably an hour on the Biomass mission and then couldn't complete it) had the flamethrower and just had no way to replenish ammo. I didn't feel like the guy using it was being wasteful with his flamer ammo (it takes a while to finish those things off). I'm going to pay closer attention to mission briefings from now on and try to be the "required guy" or bring the "required weapon" myself. Then I've got no one to blame but myself.

I don't want to make it sound like I don't like the game. I can't wait to play more tonight.  icon_smile

Couple more questions:
-Does the medic dropping the Health Capsule thingie help remove those fiendish little alien thingies from a teammate's neck? A teammate suggested so, but I saw a couple cases where people did that and it really seemed to have no effect (well it helps alleviate the teammate's health loss).

Melee attacking doesn't seem to do anything but damage my teammate. I wanna help remove the bloodsucker or whatever it's called, but I dunno what to do.  confused I think it'd be cool if they removed friendly fire from melee and let it be a "tool" for helping clean those suckers off teammates, in the co-op spirit.

-If I draw on the map, does everyone see my drawings, or just me? I think it would be fun/useful for plotting out a strategy or general direction, but obviously if only the player drawing on the map sees it, not so much.

-When I tried the dual pistols, I was firing very slowly and deliberately. This other guy with them was firing them frantically in bursts. Given the paucity of ammo, I'm hesitant to do that. Still, was that the secondary firing mode for dual pistols maybe? Or is one of the classes better with them?

I always play around 3 or 4am and have only had 1 game where people didn't use chat. I use it, but only for important things. Some guys I were with last night were like narrating everything. Was a bit annoying.

If by fiendish neck thing you mean infection, then yes. Just make sure no one else is standing in it if you don't have the med gun too.

Everyone sees drawing, sorta the point Tongue

I don't really know what to call it. It's the little alien that hops up on the back of your neck and seems to start clawing at you there, reducing your health quite a bit for a period of time. Is that called an Infection?

Had a lot of fun groups tonight. Dae and I got a Steam Friends game going and Cheeba and SoulChild from OO joined us (I sent a bunch of game invites via the GT/OO community group for this so it did come in handy). We had a lot of fun, and a lot of death.  icon_smile Ending with a wild and successful dash by Dae to the Exit Point w/ a smidgeon of healthy left.

A Dae demise:

Dae prepares for his successful solo escape (rest of us kicked the bucket): icon_smile

I hope it's not considered spamming per se, but I just hit the invite button on a bunch of folks in the community group for the game and it worked well enough:

*"Chris" has either the best or the scariest Steam nickname ever, eh?  icon_lol

Thats a cool death pic. I didn't realize how low my health was on that escape run. I actually took a small wrong turn at the bridge. Good thing that transport ramp lowered when it did. Had a lot of fun. Still don't know why my mic isn't working.  I've not used the mic headset since installing Win 7. Probably some setting I'm missing. Sorry if I missed any chat after the game. i let the wife take over the computer to look at her doll bids on Ebay smile ....Hope to play more with you all. Thanks for the invites and the pics.

I had an interesting game where the bomb detonated before just as the ship got there to pick us up. However, since it was just a light flash effect that covered the scree, I kept holding down the move right button and when the ramp lowered it registered me as having gotten safely onboard the transport even though the timer ran out, the result was a mission success. Pretty funny.

I'm interested in making some maps for the game that tests some gameplay design ideas I've had brewing in my head for a while, stuff where you have to make choices as to what objectives to accomplish, how to split up (and you will have to split up at some point), and variable objectives that change location or don't appear every time you play. I pulled a lot of ideas from the boardgame Space Alert that I think would make a great replayible scenario for Alien Swarm.

The 3 of us sort of felt like we were watching a Daehawk movie. I was worried this giant alien piano would drop on your head at the end just before you stepped onto the transport.  icon_smile I did catch some of the ending in FRAPS video, I'll try to post that tonight.

I did see the mic icon blink when you tried to talk last night, just didn't hear anything.

Random Observations:
*The "homing rockets" weapon equipment (you only get 3 shots, and the characters with Explosives bonuses do more damage) you unlock after a few levels is Awesome. I would save it for some of the nastier, hardier boss creatures. I got some nice video of Cheeba and I both using it.

* I glossed past the "ammo kit" you can equip as secondary weapon. You just drop it on the ground, and you and any squad mates can click on it to replenish ammo. I didn't use it all the time, but for ammo gobbling stuff like the Assault guy's Autogun, it's handy, and it's helpful to the whole squad.
* I didn't even know there was a "healing gun," I'll have to remember that option when playing the Medic.
* The Tesla Gun is "friendly fire free." I'd like to suggest it to the PUG player who nailed me repeatedly and offed me in an earlier game. I don't mind incidental stuff but either the guy was purposely shooting me or he just wasn't paying any attention at all.
* I did find just about everyone using voice comm yesterday. There was one group that seemed to have two 12 year olds with headset volume about 3 times louder than necessary, constantly yelling ("HEY HEAL ME! HEY DoN'T LET ME DIE! NOOOOOOOO!"). OMG, I couldn't take it. I'd like some option to individually mute players (as in Killing Floor). Is that in there? I fiddled with Audio menu and didn't see something like that. Maybe fans can Mod that feature in.

Now that I think about it, check in the Win 7 settings to see if your mic is muted. Or if your headset has a mute-button integrated into the cord, perhaps that's in mute mode. That's often the issue if you're speaking into it and nobody hears it.

One thing I like about my rechargeable Plantronics wireless headset is that the mic automatically mutes if I flip it up out of the way, and it automatically UNmutes if I flip it down. Thus removing me from the process. I'm ALL for that.  icon_smile
===================
One thing I like about the size of the maps is that there is sometimes more than one route. Or, you can decide whether it's best to work "clockwise" through a map or "counter-clockwise." Sometimes it's easier to do the objectives in one direction, even if it looks longer on the map.

I've already seen several custom maps in the matchmaking system (you can filter them out if you want to stick with the release maps). The splash page in-game for each custom map has a download link. I'm not sure if it downloads through the game or if you need to pop out for a bit to do that first.

Actually, the one I used was the "smart bomb" that unlocks at max level - 27. I think it has more rockets than previous versions.

The Hornet Swarm item actually don't do more damage if you have a character who uses explosives, instead, using it actually sends out more hornet missiles per use. So someone with a character who has no explosive skill might send out 1-3. With the explosive skill it becomes a flurry of tracking missiles.

Visually, I couldn't tell the difference. It looks like a Flurry to me no matter who uses it.  icon_smile

i had fun last night and I will be up for more action tonight.  I can't understand why my mic won't work.  Heck, I kept hearing Cheeba and Blackjack thru my speakers instead of my headset.  Anyway, I like this game ..my only quibble is infestation is too strong and you are hosed if you don't have a medic
