for free!  it sounds kinda like Alien Breed Impact; I'd feel really dumb if I paid for that game if Alien Swarm is the same gameplay wise  icon_twisted  Tongue

no, it's better.  4 person coop with classes.  it actually rewards you to have a balanced group and good team tactics win out over what passes for it in alien breed.  AS was the best mod for UT2K4 of them all imo and if they can get it on steam for free, it will be a great gaming night way to get a GT group.

That was my worry.  Can it be played with only two players?

Alien Swarm
http://store.steampowered.com/app/630/
Lots of pre-recorded voice chatter from the various characters. I hope it has integrated voice chat.

Looks closer to Shadowgrounds in its top-down view, and there are some neat slo-mo death animations when a player gets offered. Doesn't seem to shift camera angles the way Alien Breed Impact does (I like that aspect of ABI but many don't and want a consistent camera viewpoint, so I think that's probably a good thing for most).

Sounds fun, although unless they do a "real" matchmaking system (not the half-arsed Alien Breed Impact matchmaking that doesn't work for most players, most of the time), I'm skeptical about co-op even though it's what I'd be most excited about.

I bought the 3rd person Unreal-based Scourge Project for it's co-op but it's virtually impossible to find anyone to play it with, and there's no matchmaking to speak of. They seem to expect you to harass people for their IMs and try to connect that way.

I just keep finding that my co-op glee is often squashed by failure of folks to put any thought into a matchmaking/game lobby system that works simply. There are exceptions (Killing Floor, L4D etc.). It's 2010, I don't want to have to IM and exchange IP addresses any more to get a game going.  icon_neutral

I will definitely look for it Monday.  icon_smile

There are some pretty wild bosses that seem to require grouping up, but maybe 2 can do it.

I "analyzed" the trailers a bit. A few things I saw...

*One "post mission failure" splash screen suggestion: "Coordinate your squad's movement and firing zones."

*One tip popped up: Press "L" for Combat Flares

Actually, if Cain's already played this stuff I guess I shouldn't waste time analyzing.  icon_smile

I just set up a OO/GT based Steam group for people looking for buddies to play this with.

If you want to be able to edit events and whatnot, let me know and I can mod you.

IN day 1 in a big way! Even my decrepit gaming rig looks to have the specs to play it. I'm really looking forward to playing this with my son and nephew.

think "top-down Colonial Marines".  a marine's worst enemies are the stalking aliens and the trigger happy aiming-optional marine with a flamethrower on your six who decides to "help" by lighting everything up like the 4th.  your next worst enemy is the lone soldier who thinks he can rush through and complains about how slow you are.

I was actually considering that, that you get additional stuff you can buy later.

But then it is also a great advertising tool for steam so it could be the main reason.

Actually, it's free because there used to be a team of modders from a group called Black Cat games working on the source version of Alien Swarm. It was intended to be their first retail product.

However, Valve ended up hiring the two lead guys from the project to work at Valve on various things. Those guys then went on to work on this on their own time and decided to release it for free.

I've played a little TF2 with voice on Steam and didn't have any issues, but do you generally have to open up some ports to get games to work? I've been unable to join people from the GT/OO group.

i have been unable to join anything from the group as well.

played a bit offline and it's pretty much as i remembered.  looks better, but that's about it afaik.  that's a good thing as the base game didn't need much improvement.

icon_lol Yeah, I found out that you can fall off the map the hard way. As I said over at OO, at this point my most effective role is doing the minigames while people cover my butt.

I have problems handling those infestation issues. I end up clicking tons of times and leaving 10 med crates. What is the trick?

Sigh. That sounds like Alien Breed Impact's co-op. It was fun as all get out but after the first couple of weeks the matchmaking didn't seem to work at all and there was no manual-workaround to cope with it.

I'll definitely still give this a whirl though I just don't know why it seems so much harder for overhead/isometric games to work reliably online even when they're using FPS engines.  icon_confused
