well, today was/is the day that the 40gigs came out in the shops here in the UK,and all the newspapers have been advertising it...but not one mentioned the lack of backwards compatibilty(or the memory card readers for that matter)......it pains me(and also amuses me icon_twisted),that maybe some mums etc will pick up one of these for little billys birthday or christmas, and on that day a major fallout by the kid going nuclear because the mum bought the crap version PS3,LOL

All I have to say after reading about this new 40GB model, is that I am VERY glad to have a 60GB one with hardware for BC. I don't know what I would do if I couldn't play Panzer General and Allied General, both of which are PS1 games.

I can't find a good verifying source, but I'm fairly sure I read that the PS1 emulation has always been entirely software based for the PS3, and that as such the new 40GB systems will keep PS1 BC.

You can play PS1 games on the 40GB SKU. It's just PS2 BC that has been removed.

EDIT: Damn you Wonderpug for stealing my thunder! I'll get you for this!  icon_wink

Ok, well good, not that it matters, since my PS3 has both covered. Right now the only PS2 game I play is GT4, but odds are that I will have more soon.

Basically, Sony is still wanting your money as far as PS1 games go (even though they only release, what, 1 a month if we're lucky?), so they'll keep PS1 emulation in (and yes, I realize that it was always done via software).
