It has fans that go faster the hotter it gets. Is it well ventilated? Can you tell if it is the fan or the DVD Drive? If you have a very quiet house, it does sound like a jet engine by comparison. Lucky me I have two dogs, a cat, a baby and a staticy baby monitor so I can hardly hear it.  |

when i first got my 360 whenever i played PGR3 it sounded really loud.....other ganes are fine,and the fan now(10 months later)sounds fine and i no longer get distracted by it,maybe because i have got used to it..but i no longer notice it anyway

It sounds like it in game. I think that it is the DVD drive. It actually caused the game ( NFS MW, which i just bought) to bring up the loading screen in game, almost like it is having trouble reading disks. I am going to try it with something else and see what it does.

Agreed, I talked to BB which is where I had purchased it. You may remember that It died on me earlier this month and they said since I was still in the 90 manufacturers warranty, they would exchange it and let me keep the 2 yr. replacement plan on it. Off to best buy I go to try again!!!! At least I don't have to ship it to MS  |

Mine sounds the exact same way - jet engine on low when in the Live service, and a jet engine on full blast when playing any games.
I might as well use my warranty through Gamestop to get a quieter one. It's so bad, it keeps me from playing the damn thing.

Just how loud of a jet engine? Whenever I play games on DVD, the drive seems pretty loud. But I don't know if it's jet engine loud. The 360 is quiet as a mouse when playing Live Arcade games. Is everyone's DVD drive loud, but maybe not jet engine loud?
Just got my 360 about 3 weeks ago. The DVD drive noise is noticeable, but doesn't make me want to exchange it or anything.

It was really loud. I could hear it over the sound of the TV which was on 20 if that means anything to you. Basically, I could hear it over the game unless i had the volumer insanely loud. Now, that I have a new system, it is super quiet. I can barely hear it at all with the tv on
