Interesting, I didn't notice the "transfer" by pushing Y option.  Need to see if I can cancel my transfer cable order.

Ok if you do the Gamestop trade in, how do you transfer your harddrive info?  It would be nice if they did that for you when you traded in, would save the expense of a cable.

I have an external HD that I'm going to move it too since you can use up to 16 gig of space on one or a USB stick to do so.  luckily I have less than that to move.

just noticed the fine print at the bottom of the ad about HD's:  customers will be given 7 days from date of new hardware purchase to transfer data off, and return with, a hard drive to trade in.  proof of purchase must be shown to receive promotional hard drive trade in value.

yeah a friend of mine has just done this,as i asked him before he bought it how he was going to transfer the data across,he didn't know ..so he rang Gamestop,and they told him that nugget of info..and that's what he did

I had done the trade-in thing to get one of these yesterdays.  I basically had to pay $9 out of my pocket after I brought in my Elite, WiFi adapter, 120GB hard drive, and then 4 games that were on their "guaranteed $25 trade-in list."  The guy at Gamestop allowed me to take the drive back home and use my transfer cable (that MS had sent to me for free back when I bought the 120GB drive to move up from a 20 GB one).  The process was real simple.  Hook up the 120 GB drive to the transfer cable and then plug the USB into the new XBox.  It came up detecting the transfer cabled and asked me what I wanted to do, which was transfer data to the console.  It then brings up a menu where you can pick and choose what you want to send over.  The process was much cooler than when I did the drive copies before as you couldn't choose and you needed a software disc.

As for my impressions, it is definitely smaller and much quieter than my Falcon 260 Elite.  Even when it spins up the drive, it is much quieter and when I have games installed, you can't really tell the thing is on.  I wouldn't have gotten it, but I figured for $9 out of my pocket, I couldn't pass up doubling my hard drive capacity and also having the little plug for Kinect when I get it so that I don't need to plug it into an outlet.

more info on the 360 'slim' RDOT/RDOD

from Kotaku

it appears the new 360 will shut down to cool down when the red light flashes..here you go

Quote
The new smaller Xbox 360 will not flash the "Red Ring of Death" the iconic symbol of catastrophic system failure. It's new warning mark is the "red eye". Sounds...ominous.

It's not necessarily the red eye of death, though.

This new 250GB unit is clearly displaying the red dot. That's only half the story.

Apparently, here is the warning message this Xbox 360 is running:

Quote
The Xbox 360 is shutting down to protect the console from insufficient ventilation.

    You can turn the console back on after the power light stops flashing.

It appears that when things go wrong for the new 250GB Xbox 360, it can send out a warning and shut itself down, giving Xbox 360 enough time to do something very important: Brace themselves.

thankfully all of my entertainment centers have been wide open, with no doors or even backs to constrict airflow.

That shows the Wireless N is from a card that's physically in the machine.  That pretty much guarantees there's going to be a wireless-less (slywink) option in the future.

Interesting how they chose to call it the slim when it's barely any slimmer than the original.

I reserved one at Gamestop today.  Going to take full advantage of the trade in deal.  Anyways, the rep at gamestop told me that the expected delivery date for my pre order was July 7th.  So, just over 2 weeks and the next batch should be here.

you can't use one of the original HD units with the new hardware, but the drive is still removable and swappable in the new 360.  they hid the drive under a removable panel on one end this time, and it's much smaller now.  my guess is that the upcoming $199 edition might leave out wireless and have a smaller drive, with the option to upgrade the drive later.  i guess we'll know more later...

I'm curious what happens if you just plug it in.  If you tear apart the plastic shell on a old xbox HDD it is just a 2.5" sata hdd.  I wouldn't be shocked if ripping it out and plugging it into the port on the Xbox S (which is just a normal SATA port) just worked.

there isn't really any reason that it should be different than the original transfer process...remove the source drive, connect transfer cable to source drive, plug other end into USB port of 360 with destination drive attached, and tell it to copy (with software now built into the xbox).  there are pictures of the new drives floating around and i see no reason that they shouldn't work with the old transfer cables.

i think its just us/the public who have called it 360 'slim'..i am pretty sure it isn't the official name,we just used that to compare with PS3

Doh...the name's been bantered around here so much, I just assumed it was official. slywink I checked the big box stores' and gamestop's online sites for availability, and it's just referred to as the Xbox 360 250 GB. I agree with Ceekay; 360-S would have been a slicker name and drawn on found memories of the improved, original Xbox controller.

LOL, look what Gamestop is calling it:

The Xbox 360 250GB Accessory Bundle includes:

    * Xbox 360 250GB S Console with 1 Xbox 360 Black Wireless Controller
    * Xbox 360 250GB S Removable Hard Drive
    * 1 additional Xbox 360 Black Wireless Controller
    * Hard Drive Data Transfer Cable
    * Xbox 360 Black Headset
    * Xbox 360 Composite A/V cable (standard definition)
    * One Month Xbox LIVE Gold Membership
    * 1 year limited console warranty

LOL,you called it
