I just bought a 360 Premium system with the 20 GB HD from a fellow GT'er.  I went through and deleted all the stuff from the previous owner that I didn't want (i.e. demos, profiles, movies, etc), so there's only about 300-400 MB that I'm using right now.   However, when I check "Device options" on the Memory tab through the dashboard, it says the storage capacity of the drive is only 13.9 GB.  It lists 13.9 GB total with 13.7 GBavailable, and there's a note below that says "remaining space reserved for system use".

It seems crazy that the system is using nearly 30% of the HD capacity for "system use", whatever that is.  So do I have something wrong with my HD?

Nope, nothing wrong. It's just the way the 360's hard drive is setup. There were lots of complaints about that when the 360 first came out.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/911593/en-us is the official breakdown.

"The total capacity of the Xbox 360 Hard Drive is 20 GB. Of this amount, approximately 7 GB is reserved for system use. Approximately 4 GB of that portion is reserved for game title caching and other hard drive-specific elements in games that support the hard drive, and an additional 2 GB is reserved for use by the Xbox 360 backwards-compatibility software. This leaves you with almost 14 GB of free space, rounded down to 13 GB in the Dashboard, to save game files, downloadable content and music, and other media.

Depending on the market, the hard drive comes preloaded with content, such as videos and Live Arcade games. Therefore, actual free space on a new hard drive may be 11 to 12 GB."

You may have already done this, but as shipped from MS, the 360 has close to .5 to 1.0 gigs of promotional vids on there. You can delete those too.

As for me, the closest I've gotten to filling it was when I downloaded the 1.2gb crackdown demo. I think that pushed me to 9.0 or something...

20 gb was such a stupid idea. Not as stupid as the core system, but stupid none-the-less. At least the PS3 has a hard drive no matter what, and better yet, has one that can be swapped out for larger one. You can't do much with the 360's.
And what happens if we buy the 120 gb version? How will we transfer our data?

Not that I'm done being angry about that, I'm going to be furious about Alberto Gonzales.

It comes with a transfer cable to send your data to the larger drive.

Well, that's another good way to end my anger.
