I've picked up two Xbox 1 games to play on the 360:  KotOR 2 and Thief:  Deadly Shadows.  KotOR 2 works fine and plays just like it did on the original XBox.  Thief, however, is an unplayable mess.  Somehow light sources got screwed up, so now any sort of fire shows right through walls (i.e. if there's a torch or fire in a fireplace on the opposite side of a wall, it will bleed through to the side you're on).  Also, the light reflections coming in through windows now "stick" in one place in the room, no matter how the camera is positioned.  It's tough to explain, but it suffice to say, it basically makes the game unplayable.

So, is BC on the 360 hit-and-miss like this, or do most games work without a hitch?  There's a couple other XBox games I'd like to pick up, but don't want to spend the $$ if they're going to have significant problems.

Some games do have issues with the BC emulation.  I've tried playing Red Dead Revolver (which looks like a pretty fun western) but like you I'm having major graphical issues that are detracting from gameplay.  Your best bet to find out if a game has issues is to search the official XBox.com forums for the game in question and see what pops up.

I had the same thing with Thief - weird lights showing through the walls.  Most everything else has been fine with the occasional glitch here and there.

Wow, I'd never been to the official XBox forums before.  What an complete mess!

My main problem is that the lights show through people as well.  So you have guards walking around with what looks like a torch burning in their chest because of the glitch.   Think I'll just track down the PC version instead.

I've been very annoyed by the exact same issue in Thief.  I don't know that it's unplayable, exactly, but it's a pretty significant problem that is constantly in your face reminding you it's there.

I've also had a problem with Destroy All Humans and Scarface running widescreen graphics in a 4:3 box.

The worst thing is that the BC team won't mention or acknowledge these problems.  None of them are listed in the "Known Issues" section.  Honestly, I'm just happy they're still working on making games BC, so the fact that I have to play DAH or SF in 480p and reset my settings every time I want to do that is annoying but doable.  But it would be a lot more bearable if they would just say, "We know this problem exists. We're working on it" or even "We know this problem exists.  There's nothing we can do.  Sorry."

i've picked up a number of xbox games for my 360 and played them without any trouble.  if you tell us specifically what you're thinking about picking up, i'm sure someone here could chime in on how well it works.  as for my own experiences, here's a list of games that have all worked great for me (and that are all worth checking out)...

Ninja Gaiden Black
Psychonauts
Jade Empire
Halo 1 & 2
Panzer Dragoon Orta
Sphinx & The Cursed Mummy
