Anecdotally it's been a lot easier to find XB1's in stock around here than PS4's, although I'm thinking it's more of a supply issue than demand issue this early in the game.

like I said, I was surprised to see both in stock yesterday, just sitting there on the shelves.

on the shelf?! in less than a month?!  oh no, this means the industry will collapse.

Dear ForgeForsaken,

You do realize that by the VERY NATURE OF THE PRICE DIFFERENCE, if MS are not more  than 19.9999% in sales behind Sony, their gross earnings will be higher, as marginal as that may be in terms of profit. (500 vs 400 - how's THAT for math!). SCIENCE!

I just assumed you weren't using the term correctly and were talking about physical console sales, as to do so would be unlike you  Tongue

But I believe it edges it out still.  Rumored PS4 numbers put it 228k ahead of XB1.

Man I had some weird math there I think, but the results remain effectively the same with the PS4 outgrossing the XB1.

Interesting that this close to christmas, you find units sitting around in stores. I can tell that in Denmark the PS4 is COMPLETELY sold out, as in people have preordered it like crazy and only half got it on release day.

I am slightly thankful though, even though I enjoy being a firstmover, that others get to handle the headaches of software and hardware issues first. Yes, I try hard to be positive about not having any of these new machines yet! ;-)

You keep bringing this up, and I'm still not sure why. Major Nelson said NA when he should have said US. So what? What difference does it make? Then you bring up Mexico for some bizarre reason, despite it not being related to anything I, Major Nelson, Microsoft or Sony said.

Is this the question? If so, the relevance is that the comparison made is based on target market and distribution : saying a console sold more than 1 million in North America vs 900K in the US is disingenuous when calling out the other for using the shorter month to say `faster`- Both Mexico and Canada`s sales factor into Sony`s numbers.

They are both worthwhile products, have a lot to offer and are going to sell well. To YK`s point earlier - this is a far cry from the doom-and-gloom predictions against Microsoft specifically (leading up to their launch), and Sony has been on-point when it came to elbowing their way to the forefront.

Neither one is a runaway success more than the other at this point - and if there is one thing to be seen with this is that both Sony and MS are hungry for this kind of success. Nintendo is doing better right now, but 200,000 Marios sold? That isn`t great news.

Apart from our falling out at the very beginning of these console discussions you've been pretty rational, if a little prone to rambling, throughout this whole ordeal. That's why I find it extra puzzling that you react so strongly to what was essentially a harmless tweet being posted about.

Mexico doesn't, but I see now what you mean. My original mention of numbers was based on the assumption that both were NA numbers. Major Nelson said as much for the Microsoft numbers, and the Sony numbers were confirmed NA (as in US and Canada only). What I originally said was true based on the available information at the time. It was never my intention to make this a Sony vs Microsoft competition as I only wanted to make fun of Major Nelson's spin. And no, Sony hasn't done anything at the same level, or even close to it, during this console launch. Microsoft could have played it clean by saying "we got groundbreaking sales for the Xbox One at 909k units sold during the month of November in the US alone", and that would have been both impressive and honest. Instead they chose to fight a losing battle by comparing their sales to Sony's in a dishonest way.

As for actual comparisons, the NPD numbers aren't public so we don't know the exact sales in the US for the PS4. However, we know some things that have been shared by NPD analyst Liam Callahan:

Quote
He added that PS4 “led U.S. hardware sales for the month, and marked the highest first month sales of a hardware platform on record.”

He clarified that PS4 had an additional week versus Xbox One, noting that “when looking at sales on an average per-week basis, Xbox One led PS4. Keep in mind, however, that supply typically becomes constrained in the second week after launch.” He added that Xbox One was the “second highest selling platform for the month, which marked the largest launch for a Microsoft console.”

In other words, the PS4 outsold the Xbox One in the US in November. That's not the point I was trying to make though, as that would be ridiculous with all these shortages preventing potential sales from happening. Microsoft, on the other hand, is trying to take advantage of the average consumer's lack of math skills to exploit A) that the Xbox One launched later in the month and B) that shortages means average sales per day would drop dramatically for both consoles right away, as the analyst points out. That's dishonest and sleazy, but Major Nelson did it with such aplomb that it became funny.

It became less funny when Microsoft took it further. Now it's just looking desperate.

I think only desperate to some.

From where I sit, they had a ton of bad press and they need to reassure the market (aka stockholders, potential new customers who are looking to buy) that they`re doing just fine.

I don`t begrudge either - it`s part of the dance.

Nintendo is cratering in sales. They push barely more than 200k consoles in one of the 2 busiest months of the year. Nintendo is gonna have to have a reckoning about their future after the Holidays.

3ds is doing well, the WiiU is a bit of a disaster.  I'm a bit surprised how well they are hanging on in the handheld market with the rise of mobile and tablets.

I think that's the kind of comment that makes people get defensive. There's no way in hell any rational person could call Microsoft "desperate" with these kinds of sales numbers.

That's more straightforward. From memory, I believe the PS4 claimed 2.1 million sold worldwide in 18 days, and Xbox One claimed 2 million in 19 days. Or something like that.

yeah, it is disengenous to say 'higher average in Nov'.  compare the first month if you want to be honest about it. instead, let's look at what they've told us or NPD.

It was reported that PS4 sold 2.1 mil in November, over 17 days.  MS sold 2 mil XB1 in 19 days.  that works out to ~123,529 and ~105,263.

With this post? Hardly. There was an error in the comparison (the subject of mirth was in that the spin does exactly that). So it`s ok to laugh at the one thing, but not the other?

Right, sorry! I forgot the golden rule.

Some of us like discussing the industry and unfortunately it's becoming increasingly clear that GT is not a forum that can handle those types of discussions as there are too many console warriors who take it personally.  If you can only ever talk about positive news for one console or people freak out, it's just not going to be conducive to any interesting conversations that could be had.

As a public face for Microsoft's gaming division, it's Major Nelson's job to "spin," which is really just a negative way to say "marketing and promotion." There's nothing wrong with it. Every commercial you watch on TV for every product is doing the same thing.

Apparently MS did a damn good job of it too, because despite being significantly higher priced and suffering months of bad PR, they still managed to sell a shit ton of units. Sony Defense Force - MISSION FAILED. Please return to base.  icon_biggrin

Considering Sony outsold the XB1 on MS' home turf, wouldn't that be a MISSION SUCCESS  ninja

nope, the SDF should have stopped anyone from buying the XB1.  Even one sale was a failure on your part, let alone 909,000 and counting.  effin' new school SDF, it's like comparing New Direction to New Kids on the Block.
You're confusing the Sony Defense Force with the Sony Assault Force.
LOL. Sony doesnt need a defense force anymore fortunately. They don't need an assault force either.

I think the OP is outdated. If people want to discuss marketing spin, it can have its own thread. This one is a grab bag of topics and I agree with Zinfan. This topic should be shuttered.

Too much baggage, and we are projecting what we believe to be the other persons point based not on what is presented, but our own perception. Problem is, we can't see past it without giving the benefit of the doubt. Case in point: I didn't for a moment defend ms's spin - I stepped in to correct a discrepancy.

I eventually made assumptions of TiLTs message. Mea culpa.

To be blunt: you, YK, and msd make me want to give up on these forums for console discussion.

Me, Purge, and MSD aren't the ones consistently posting negative information about the console we don't own. If anyone should feel like giving up, it's us.

To be honest, I feel the same way as Wonderpug, and its very distressing. I realize that you may not think so, but when several of us has this perception, then no matter what your intent may be, this is the reality some of us perceive. Now, there are several solutions to this, and one of them is us not participating in this discussion anymore I guess. I'll leave the other options up to you.

That doesn't really make things better. The hostility generated in this thread is bound to spill over into other threads (and has already in some cases), and it creates pointless barriers between the members of our community.

I honestly don't care about the NPDs.  What I would like to know is global sales for both platforms.

That's more straightforward. From memory, I believe the PS4 claimed 2.1 million sold worldwide in 18 days, and Xbox One claimed 2 million in 19 days. Or something like that.

or maybe from the post above:

yeah, it is disengenous to say 'higher average in Nov'.  compare the first month if you want to be honest about it. instead, let's look at what they've told us or NPD.

It was reported that PS4 sold 2.1 mil in November, over 17 days.  MS sold 2 mil XB1 in 19 days.  that works out to ~123,529 and ~105,263.

Yeah, I saw that, but it's been a couple of weeks now since November ended.  I want up-to-date, which I realize I won't be able to have.  One thing it does seem from just watching reports of the consoles coming in stock is that MS seems to be winning the war on having product in stock.  I think it's helped them in keeping the numbers close to Sony.  Also, I think people, now that the thing is out, are forgetting about all the bad press MS made for themselves and just getting the console because it actually seems pretty good.  It certainly has its issues (for some reason the dumb thing never wants to sign me in, but it signs the other members of my family in just fine and I keep telling it that it didn't recognize me), but I think the features it came with that separate it from Sony work well in practice (especially once you learn how they intended you to interface with it).
