You do realize that current gen games are being upscaled to 1080p as well, right? That doesn't make them full HD.

Yes, but again - how many people can tell? I'm talking blind test without preconceived notions of which console *should* look better?

For a real-world example, would it be apt to compare the way an over-the-air HD broadcast looks compared to a blu-ray movie?

Not really, movies don't really compare to games in that movies are all downscaled (well excluding really crappy CGI stuff) from extremely high res sources.

Admittedly, the difference between 900p and 1080p is hard to spot for most people. We're still not sure what resolution AC4 is running at, but speculation says 900p. It's still newsworthy. The difference between 720p and 1080p on the other hand is quite dramatic, and anyone would be able to spot that.

So tired of resolutiongate. How many of these people so worried about 180p difference every made sure they bought the latest $700 video card for their PC so they got the absolute best graphic experience possible for every PC game?

Except this isn't about whether or not people are willing to spend $700 for better graphics.  It's about whether they're willing to spend $100 *less* to get them.

The question would better be phrased, "How many of these people would decide to buy the $700 PC video card after being presented with consistent testimony from multiple sources that the $600 version would give them double the performance?"

Let's cut the hyperbole on both sides for the sake of a healthy discussion. Tongue The PS4 in no way has double the performance of the Xbox One.

For a person with 20/20 vision to discern the difference between native 720p and native 1080p on a 50 inch screen, they have to be sitting closer than 10 feet.

You're talking about discerning the difference between upscaled 720p (or 900p) vs native, where the difference is even smaller.

That's not fanboyism, that's just scientific fact. So yes for people who are going to be sitting really close to their 50+ inch screens, this makes a difference. For anyone else, you're delusional.

Well, good to know that I'm delusional then. I can easily tell the difference between 720p and 1080p on my TV from my couch. You do realize that you don't need to count pixels, right? The biggest effect from the change in resolution comes from aliasing artifacts, and those are easy to spot on any resolution, from almost any distance.

Pretty sure a lot these numbers came about when looking at video and not games.  As I noted, with video you are downsampling a super high res source, it's not the same thing as rendering something natively from scratch.

Fair enough: I'll amend to say "significantly better performance."  I don't know what percentage greater processing power is required to allow the PS4 to play Ghosts at a higher resolution with a better, more stable frame rate than the XB1, but speaking as someone who puts a high premium on visual clarity and steady performance, I consider those to be substantive differences.

My point with my comment above is that Hetz is pressing buttons. Clearly there is a disparity between cross-platform games at the moment, and I'm (personally) fine with it. Hammering away at that with the whole "victim of the ESRAM" crap is annoying, and if you want to beat a dead horse, go ahead.

Sony is *not* top dog when it comes to graphics - but even if they were it's unimportant. If the Wii was any indication, it's that commercial success is NOT determined by screen resolution - so neither are they the best, nor is the argument of value proposition even fairly represented in history (or at least, there are literally MILLIONS of reasons why resolution may not matter).

My apologies if that was responding to baiting.

So I used my BOGO code from Amazon and I opted for the two sports titles (Madden and NBA2K).

Madden is scheduled to ship tomorrow.   NBA2k which didn't indicate any kind of problems, now shows shipping Dec 24th???    What the heck?

I'm not familiar with those games, but according to the PS4 FAQ, NBA2k14 is a launch title.

Any talk of the Xbox One games getting a similar BOGO or B2G1 offer next week? If so, my wife is going to kill me. I've got to save some games for birthday/Christmas but it's hard to pass up that deal!

Supposedly both Target and Amazon are going to have something.  I saw someone on CAG got a response from an Amazon rep about it.

Does anyone anyone know if the Xbone is coming with a free month of xbox live? I can't find anything about this but it just seems crazy for them not to do it because they were basically the console that started the whole "buy a console and get a free X months of xbox live".
Sony is giving away a free month (for new users) and of course that will include a free PS+ game (Resogun) and they're giving away a month of the music streaming and actual cash in $10 of PSN credit to use in the store.
I just can't believe MS is doing  nothing at all although I haven't seen anything to suggest otherwise.

Only thing I know of so far is that the Fitness stuff will be free until the end of the year.  Still time for MS to announce something, they may just be waiting for all the NDA's to lift and come out swinging (or not).

Separate subscription needed along with XBL Gold, no idea of price.  As EngineNo9 says it is free until Jan 2015.

YK, avert your eyes!

For those of you who are interested in seeing how the resolution differences play out, Ben Kuchera is reporting on twitter that almost no game on either system is able to maintain 1080p at 60fps, but that the PS4 "gets closer, more often. Take that as you will."

Ok, YK, you can see this part:

He ends with: "The war of resolution and fps is completely silly anyway. I've played a ton of both systems: Have yet to see a "bad" looking game."

Remote play with the Vita. It looks amazing and no lag. This might allow me to actually play some PS4 games. With a 2 month old I just find that I don't have a nice block of time to sit down and game (he's sleeping on my shoulder as I type this). If remote play works the way it should then I can just leave the PS4 running and not worry about sharing the TV with my wife and the Vita suspend feature should let me pick up and play a game for 5 or 10 minutes at a time.

Given that I have a WP8, having my pics and stored videos available to access via my TV is awesome.

It's not just for that though - if you store pics and videos online on SkyDrive, it's all available (including content shared to you).

It's all good, I'm over it. I'm happy with the decision to go Xbox at launch, and since I plan on picking up a PS4 in the spring anyway, getting my panties in a ruffle is of little value. It's just frustrating to see people obsessing over such minor differences this generation when in the past technical specs have had little to do with console success. It has been, and always will be, about the games. It's also frustrating to see the resolution differences constantly held up as proof of the Xbox's inferiority when not everyone is obsessed about counting pixels.

It reminds me of the Android people at work who criticize my iPhone because it costs more money but doesn't have an HDMI out or something. They can't wrap their head around the concept that some people don't give a fuck about having an HDMI out on their phone. I like my iPhone because of the whole experience, not just one narrow cherry picked aspect. And yes, I'm willing to pay a premium for that experience, even if the specs look inferior on paper.
