I couldn't find a thread for 2013, so I decided to create one.   I'm still pondering my game of the year but I have several canididates

Shadowrun Returns
Dead Rising 3
Forza 5
GTA V
Tomb Raider

I'm really leaning towards Tomb Raiders....  What is really surprising to me is that I don't consider Bioshock: Infinite as one of my GOTY..

I can't really see anything knocking GTA V off the GOTY throne for my part, though there have been some absolutely stellar game releases this year. GTA V is just a marvel on so many fronts, not least in showing that you can have a fun, huge, meaningful open-world game without filling it with random collectibles for no reason (oh hi there Ubisoft!).

Roughly...

The Swapper Amazing atmosphere, great puzzles and an ending that sticks with you.
Call of Juarez: Gunslinger.  The best arcade corridor FPS in years.  Fun inventive narrative too.
Last of Us.  Fantastic story telling and an excellent blend of stealth to gunfights gameplay

Saints Row 4.  Just stupid fun, full of amazing geek culture references.
Tomb Raider.  A great reboot, and like Last of Us a nice blend of stealth/gunfighting.
AC4.  Getting the series back on track, and Caribbean is just a great environment.
Super House of Dead Ninjas. The best of the retro platformers.  Fast and tight gameplay with great sound effects.

GOTY Top 5
1.  Tomb Raider (PS3)
2.  Puppeteer (PS3)
3.  Final Fantasy XIV:  A Realm Reborn (PC)
4.  Bioshock Infinite (PC)
5.  Diablo III (PS3)

GOAT
-  Nothing jumps immediately to mind...will have to give that some additional thought.

I'm at Tomb Raider and ACIV. I think I would go ACIV over Tomb Raider, just because it offered a lot more content. Both are great games IMHO, Tomb Raider was good enough that I am actually considering buying the HD version just to play through it again.

funny, I was thinking of creating one of these myself.

GOAT definitely is A:CM, only by virtue being picked up instead of Simcity, for the despicable approach they took to marketing the game and how badly they mis-managed it.  it wasn't a pretty game to look at either.

as for GOTY, TR2013 definitely beats out BioInf in terms of gameplay, graphics, level design and environment. The story isn't as good but only for the last 30 minutes.  I really expected BioInf to be better as well.

against GTA V, it loses in game engine/details as there is just so much going on in GTA vs the limited size of levels in TR.

GTA V vs AC4.  wow.  tough choice as both do great and I've enjoyed each of them equally.  the world is more detailed in GTA but a lot more immerse in AC4, especially with the storm effects.

saw a friend playing it, wasn't horribly impressed by anything beyond the graphics.  still, it is on my list of games to get when I pick up a used PS3 sometime in 2014 or 2015.

It's on my list.  Anyone who liked Tomb Raider will probably like that as well.  I think it's better than Tomb Raider, personally, but they are different enough that I could see someone still picking TR over it, but also similar enough that I think if you loved one you should love the other.

I played it too, I would put it just below Tomb Raider. So 3 on my list. How Ceekay can say he wasn't impressed by it is beyond me. Must be his Xbox colored glasses again.

TLOU is on my list to play as well

Although still a decent game i was a little disappointed in Bioshock Infinite, for me at least it didn't have the same excitement as i had in Bioshock 1 and 2,Rapture i think is the reason,so much more atmosphere than Columbia

GTAV will probably be top of my list,it was a great game and had a lot to live up to,and i was not disappointed

I didn't get a Tomb Raider vibe, but I figured LoU must be a slow burner.  the part I saw was in town up to the escort part, just after the predictable loss at the beginning.

I'm confused. Does GOAT not equal Greatest of All Time? From Caine's quote and a few other things, it sounds like it is supposed to the worst game of the year?

Both games offer a similar mix of gunplay/stealth and how you want to approach situations.  Tomb Raider has more climby bits, though both have a fair amount of exploration.  The bow is the best weapon in both games  ninja2

Well anyway, the correct answer is of course The Last of Us. I'd put Bioshock ahead of Tomb Raider. While TR was a very fun game it could have been a lot better.

I am hoping GTAV at least comes to PC, if not next gen, so I haven't played it yet frown

AC, I still haven't finished Brotherhood. I'll get to it eventually.

I didn't play anything too terrible this year. I suppose Battlefield 4 gets some points for screwing up MP networking and party quite a bit.

I also give CoD: Ghosts some positive points for making a pretty enjoyable single player campaign.

Ghosts was not GOTY material, I was just surprised by how much fun I had with it. Playing as a dog, remote control sniper rifles and all the crazy stuff it brought to the table.

My top 5:
1. Fire Emblem: Awakening (3DS)
2. The Last of Us (PS3)
3. Rayman Legends (WiiU)
4. Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (3DS)
5. The Swapper (PC)

As predominately a PC gamer I have to say…this wasn't a great year for PC games.

I didn't play any of the bad ones. I only buy games on the cheap now and an added plus is I can avoid the duds. My game of the year would have to be Tomb Raider. Much better than I thought it would be. I think I had more fun this year with ME3 and Deus Ex, but those games are older.

Tomb Raider is up there for my GOTY.  I found myself pretty wrapped up into that one.

For my GOAT (worst game) I award that to Gone Home.  I'm still mad at that "game" for wasting my time.

I think you missed out then, because 1: It's not your typical zombie game/movie/story.  2: The presentation and how the story is told is quite remarkable.

Last of Us and Zelda: Link Between Worlds jump to my mind first for game of the year. Last of Us blew me away and made me care about its characters more than any other game in quite some time. Zelda is joining Link to the Past and the original Zelda as games I could happily replay on a yearly basis, which is no small feat.

Bioshock didn't grab me nearly as much as it did others, and while I really really liked Tomb Raider, it's in a lower tier than Last of Us and Zelda for me.

Papers, Please gets honorable mention. I absolutely loved it, but it didn't have legs quite long enough for me to put it with my winners.

GOAT is the easiest decision ever. Sim City stands alone on a gargantuan pedestal of manure. Manure from sickly diseased animals who have been force-fed spoiled burritos for a week. What a disaster.

None of these are perfect games, but they're the ones that I think I enjoyed the most and spent the most time with this year:

State of Decay! - I think without a doubt this was the most fun I had with a game this year, and a very surprising one at that.
Saints Row 4 - Big dumb fun.  I don't think it is overall as great as SR3, but the super powers really made for a fun, streamlined game.
Dead Rising 3 - They finally shaved down enough of the rough parts of the Dead Rising formula to make this one I really enjoyed.  Squishing hordes of zombies turns out to be fun.

Good god, what has happened...not only one but TWO zombie games on my list?  I guess they just got the formulas right enough so that I enjoyed them despite my general dislike of the overused zombie thing.
