Don't be like Devil now Poncho.  They are both good.  And yes this demo is absolutely fantastic!  Gone is the choppy skating!  The skating is so incredibly realistic.  As a matter of fact, the skating engine even exceeds that of 2K7's, which was fantastic to begin with.

You play one 5 minute period with Ottawa & Anaheim.  If it's tied you go to the shootout.  Wait until you guys try out the new puck handling mechanic - it completely and utterly transformed this game into the most realistic simulation of hockey I've ever seen!

I tried it.  I suck.  But it is good.  And it's fun.  I don't know what I'm doing.  I did check someone into the wall once.  That was LOTS of fun.   icon_biggrin

I'm having a bout of Lockdown-itis.

I've played the demo 5 times now and I'm ready to say this is probably the best hockey video game I've ever played.

Couple of things I've already noticed fixed from last year:

- Faceoffs: They actually work like you think they would with the stick controls. You can win some!

- The Stick: Like Shifty said. Unbelieveable!

- Positioning: I almost wet myself. Offensive zone face-off and I win it back to the right point as I move him over to the left, the other defenseman collapses down on the boards. That kicks ass alone, but it doesn't end there. The right point that is now vacated from this shift is covered by the by my right wing!!! THEY GOT HOCKEY RIGHT!!!!

Good God this thing rocks!!!

(Sports Forum?)

Oh, and Lockdown said he checked someone into "the wall". THE WALL??!!? WTF? I'm actually embarassed for you.

The wall comment was supposed to be a joke.  Like my dumb short sentences post style.  I guess I suck at humor.

I have such a tough time controlling the players as well.  I need to spend time learning what does what.  The good news is, I figured out how to pass the puck less than 3 minutes into the demo.  THAT is something quite extraordinary I assure you.

Hey Ponch - I had no problem figuring out the controls.  In fact, I'm pretty good at them already.  However, I can guarantee that if I played this game online with you I would be crushed because that's just the way it is.  I can't play online to save my life.  crybaby

Notice how when people talk about devil and I in the same sentence, his name always gets mentioned first?  I wonder why that is?

Good to hear about the controls, Shifty.  I will definately put the time in to learning them.  Right now my biggest problem is moving the Rt. Stick 'forward' and getting rid of the puck when I don't mean to.  I definately have to get that under control.

No thank you.

As to the demo, I need to clean up some space first. Too many E3 vids, and too many recent unplayed demos.

Am I the only one here that wasn't impressed with this demo? It looked pretty, and I like the "pro stick" shooting controls (it IS fun), but the rest of the demo did not impress me. It still looked and felt too arcade-y for me. I'll still rent this year's version and see if the full game is different and/or offers decent gameplay sliders, but if nothing changes from this demo I'll either buy 2K's offering again or stick with 2K7 (for my third season in that game).

N00b Alert!

Is this N00b friendly or is it a nightmare of technical hockey skills that one must understand the intricacies of hockey to play?

I'm intersted in having fun, not attempting to realize my pent up dream of being a toothless hockey canadien.

Thoughts?

Wonderful demo.  My NHL 2kness support is swaying...

Really great & realistic how it played.  Skating was fluid.  Anaheim was doing their old dump the puck and chase tactic... I had a realistic deflection goal... good stuff!

ATB: One of the things about the more recent sports titles that makes them a great choice for people of all ages/levels is how they have all gravitated toward having a myriad of skill level choices & personal customizable sliders.  IMO, more than any other genre in gaming, this makes sports titles playable by anyone who can understand the rules of the game/sport itself.  IF the "gameplay" itself is fun for you, I can almost guarantee you will be able to set the game up to a point where it will be an enjoyable experience, regardless of your knowledge of the intracacies of hockey.  In this sense, and assuming you know the basic rules, I think all sports games are noob-friendly.

It's only when you start getting into the whole realism debate we all argue over that the noob-friendliness goes away, due to the fact that (in most games) the difficulty must usually be set higher, and understanding 'technical hockey skills' as you put it, becomes more important.

The above is debatable and totally my opinion of course.

I hate to admit that any EA sports game is better than it's 2K counterpart.  But I really enjoyed this demo.  I never tried NHL 07, but I might actually buy this over 2K8.  One thing I noticed is that it almost seems a little to easy to work the puck around and get a good shot.  The CPU plays it's defensive end almost as if it is short handed, when it is not.  The right stick controls and player momentum feel spot on in the demo.  Very nice.

I set my 360 to download the demo but that's as far as I've gotten.  I'll give it a look over the weekend.  This season will be the first that I'm not going to be in my home viewing market.  And as much as I support my team, I'm just not convinced I want to go the DirecTV center ice way to watch the team this season.  I still might cave though.  I'm weak that way.

I loved NHL '07 (possibly my most played 360 game to date), so I'm confident I'll be pleased with the '08 version.

I noticed this too... I hope that it's because of the difficulty setting.

I thought the game was very similar to the '07 version.  Really, you could have plunked me into the game without the title screen and I wouldn't have noticed the difference, except that faceoffs were way easier to win and as mentioned, the ice seemed much more open in the offensive zone.  I also successfully dump & chased (once, but it was surprising enough since that -never- worked in '07).  Oh, and I found the play-by-play way too chatty for my liking.  I can't remember if I had that turned off last year.  I just don't remember it standing out the way it does now.

WTF ATB, it's just like a FPS!
Hold the stick like a rifle then flip it end to end.
Then make use you keep the rifle butt on the ice.
Your team and the other team have bunkers covered with camouflage netting.
There's a grenade that kind of flat called a puck, don't touch it cause it's too hot!
Use your rifle butt instead to lob it into the enemies bunker.
The challenge is that the enemies bunker is guarded by their beefiest soldier and he's wearing some real nice gear.
No use hitting him cause he's too tough to take out, so get that grenade by him into his team's bunker.

BTW Don't leave your rifle cocked, it might blow your guts out when you get hip checked!  ninja
