Anyone else seen the video for this game?  The graphics look amazing for an XBLA title, and the gameplay looks very similar to the 2D Metroid games.

Love the foam gun.  Every game should have a foam gun!

This was the one announcement by MS that really had me stoked. I love Metroid and Castlevania and would love to play one of those games with modern graphics.

Reminded me of the old Crusader:No Remorse games from the ability to use the environment and the different weapons.  Different perspective of course.

I'm going to be writing more complete impressions of the game but in short, yeah, the game is pretty damn cool. Excellent graphics by any standards, not just XBLA. The controls were confusing at some points where the game placed enemies that weren't on the same two dimensional plane as you, which might not make sense but I suppose you'll see when you play it. I had a lot of fun with it though, I guess it just comes down to whether the game can keep from becoming repetitive.

Just saw a different video over at Ctrl-Alt-Del that was similar.  This looks pretty cool.  XBox.com has it listed at 1200 points with a 8/19/2009 release date.

Looks like a game I'd really enjoy. Too bad it's not on PSN, as I don't have a 360. I guess there isn't any reason to hope for a port, is there?

Ars Technica loves it

"This doesn't feel like a downloadable title in quality or presentation; everything from the graphics to the voice acting and the somewhat pulpy story impresses on multiple levels. I can think of many moments and details and asides that stick out in my mind, but it's better for everyone if you simply play for yourself on Wednesday, August 19. I'm watching online videos and peeping screenshots, and I'm finding ways to tackle situations and use weapons that I completely missed the first time through.

It seems odd that an Xbox Live Arcade title may be one of the best games this season, but there it is: this is a must-play for those looking for both a classic twist on a fresh challenge."

Eurogamer gives 9/10.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/shadow-complex-review

Quote
Shadow Complex is Super Metroid re-imagined by J.J.Abrams. Its story is pulp thriller, throwing an ordinary Joe into extraordinary circumstances under which he stiffens implausibly into a one-man army. Fleming is an all-American action hero, hurling grenades and missiles with thoughtless abandon one moment; creeping death through ventilation shafts in search of his snatched girlfriend the next. "You don't look like the kind of guy who'd pull the trigger," challenges one enemy he meets. Two seconds later, as Fleming steps over a puddle of warm, Unreal Engine-pumped blood, you can almost hear Mark Rein in the background, fist-pumping the air to chants of: "USA! USA!"

But for all its Hollywood bombast, Shadow Complex is born from nothing but the purest of Japanese pedigrees. For once the Super Metroid reference isn't a lazy critic's crutch. Epic Games has always declared its intention to resurrect the classic 2D side-scrolling exploration game, once popularized by Nintendo's seminal space adventure, later perfected by Konami's Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. So while Shadow Complex's story and setting may be popcorn nonsense, the mechanics they clothe are golden.

Giant Bomb says:

"Shadow Complex is amazing from start to finish... and after you finish it, you'll probably feel like diving right back in for another run."

and ....

"Shadow Complex is an incredibly well-made game"

p.s. He says it took him 5 hours from start to finish.

Big kudos to GT for mentioning the connection to Orson Scott Card.  I didn't see it in any of the reviews I read and had no idea the game was tied to Empire.

I've read the book and it's far from Card's best, but if anyone's looking for a companion novel for Shadow Complex it's at least a fun enough summer popcorn read.

Worth noting that Tim gives gameplay a 95. Also the cons he lists are barely cons at all:

"Game is fairly short" - but 6 hours (plus replayability) for $15 more than reasonable. Some $60 games have had 6 hours of gameplay.

"default difficulty is a bit too easy" - for us non-twitchy, non-hardcore types, this comes across as a plus.

Can't wait, just one ... more ... day.

I liked that book, it's one of the few where I read most of it in one sitting.  interest level has definitely kicked up a notch.

My first impressions are very positive - the game is fluid and easy to control, the production values are fantastic, and you're rewarded at a fairly steady clip with new items and abilities that keep you on that "just five more minutes..." high.

Plus, you get an achievement 15 seconds into the game, and who doesn't love that? slywink

Which is good because I've been stuck on 1998 points for days. Stupid Madden achievements are stuff like "tackle Adrian Peterson for a loss 20 times in one game on All-World-Super-Awesome-Madden skill level.

I hate when I find a crapload of multiplayer achievements as I very seldom play the multiplayer side. And sometimes it is nice to get those pure cheese achievements:

Achievement Unlocked: Buying Our Game!
Achievement Unlocked: Started a new game!
Achievement Unlocked: Saved for the first time!

Big problems are reported on the Xbox.com forums for people who have gone straight to downloading the full version.  Here are some sample quotes:

Quote
icongamer: this is serious problem.  I was charged twice for Shadow Complex, but only downloaded it once time.  Microsoft better make ammends or there will be legal action mark my words
MassiveQuake: WTF?!  MS blows!
SOrrYDuDe: Why did I get charged three time?!?  EDIT: Nevermind it was only twice like you guys
