Surprised they didn't wait until E3 to release this.  This looks interesting, and is apparently published by MS, so no multiplatform release.

This is going to be a free-running/grinding super hero game with lots of melee and ranged weaponry.  They've seemingly mashed together the rail combat from Bioshock Infinite with Tony Hawk, adding in the weaponry from a Ratchet & Clank game.  Add the character customization from SR IV and you're set.

Here's some early gameplay

Ratchet had a lot of rail combat, and the boss fight shown looks very Ratchet.  The whole game looks a lot like R&C gameplay in a different environment.

This is published by MS but Insomniac does own the IP, so theoretically they could make a Sunset Overdrive game for other platforms some day (though I'm sure MS has first rights of refusal).   Basically think of Gears on 360 in regards to the property (before MS bought the Gears IP from Epic) just a few months ago)

There's a cool article at Polygon where they talk with the developers about how they applied what their learned from Fuse and applied it to Sunset Overdrive.

The game looks fantastic, a shame it's Xbox One exclusive.

I kind of dismissed this one from the first trailer at last year's E3, but the more I've read about it this week the more hyped I am. Looks really, really good.

Between this, Quantum Break, and Halo/Gears of War, Microsoft has a very strong set of exclusives lined up for E3.

All you're getting from Gears at E3 is a Gear logo with chainsaw sound.

Here's the official SO trailer with gameplay

That seems weird to mention Fuse as this game looks more like a direct descendant from the DNA of Ratchet & Clank.

Essentially, what they learned was they could dump Fuse out to die, and focus on this game. slywink

I was very excited about this until you guys reminded me that this studio also made Fuse, which I was excited for, purchased, and was utter garbage.

I hope this is good.

Judging this games potential quality from one title for a long time developer like Insomniac is rather unfair.

When it was their most recent title and it was so, so bad - I think it's a fair worry.

I find it really funny how they keep saying "this fits right in with what we do best, bright and colorful action platformers" when Insomniac proper (not the North Carolina offshoot) has been distancing themselves from those types of games for years.

Insomniac are a pretty hit or miss studio.   Fuse wasn't so hot, and the Resistance games didn't really light the world on fire and varied widely in quality.   Even the R&C games have a fair bit of quality disparity.  It's really hard to know how this one will turn out until it releases.

Hit or miss except that both the Resistance And Ratchet games have a history of solid mid 80's average ratings over the years. So if you wanna call those misses I guess most all games that have ever been released are then

Into the Nexus is pretty good, but Full Frontal Assault and All 4 One are definitely misses.  Toss Fuse and something called Outernauts into the mix, and those are their last five games.

And Resistance 2 wasn't very far before that...

Resistance fell off a cliff and 2 of the last 3 ratchet games were awful. The last one was great though IMO.

So this one comes out on Tuesday the 28th and there hasn't been much talk about it around here.  Anybody excited for it?

I'm hoping for the best (basically that it's a fast action version of Dead Rising 3), but I keep getting a weird vibe about it maybe being less fun than they want you to think.  They are also trying waaaay too hard with the "attitude" part of the game.

Waiting for reviews. The gameplay videos haven't really done anything for me. I'm not sure if it's the game's style that is turning me off, or the fact that the grinding around looks too slow.

I'm getting it and am fairly excited for it. I haven't been paying too close of attention to the previews, but Ron's impressions were positive so I'm going off of that.

Most reviews from the major sites are running pretty high for this game.  Joystiq gave it 5 stars

Another game I am buying right away instead of holding off... sigh

The Kotaku review, though giving it a Yes, was pretty scathing of the humor/style of the game and seems to mesh with what I've seen from the previews and people playing on Youtube.  All I can think of is

Wondering if any of the reviewers used the tired-before-it-was-born "Sunset Overhype" line that the devs added to the game via their tv channel.

It does seem like the game is trying a bit hard to make a joke though.

Eurogamer had similar complaints.

I enjoyed this quote from their review:
Quote
If you wanted to be uncharitable, you could voice the suspicion that a great many baseball caps were turned backwards in the echoing board room where this project was greenlit...

Goes with your pics.

And they didn't have to go in that direction with the commercials.  Just show gameplay.  It's looks like a modern Dreamcast game loaded with fun.

I stayed up until midnight when it unlocked to give it a shot. Haven't even finished the tutorial yet because the character customization was so much fun. They seriously have a better character creation system than some MMOs I've played. I wound up creating a cute little ponytailed punk chick that I think fits in perfectly with the game's style.

If you're on the fence about this game, the first gun you get to shoot has testicles. That pretty much sets the tone.  icon_biggrin

I'm still far too early in the game to get a great feel for how good it's going to be, but the movement and combat feels good. While the grinding and jumping around looks slow in the gameplay videos, I understood it better while playing. It's fast enough to get you around, but slow enough that you have time to strategize combos and engage in combat while on the go.

Ok, some more thoughts/impressions after getting a little more play time in:

- While the humor style isn't completely my cup of tea, I admit to laughing out loud a few times.

Spoiler for Hiden:
The "unseen narrator" telling me I need to go through the tutorial because it's the "best way to learn shit" then getting mad when I didn't practice an attack roll like he wanted me to.

- The game is not easy - while death doesn't have a lot of consequence, even some of the early missions are quite challenging to complete since you're having to fight while trying to get used to the controls. The challenges are very difficult early in the game (maybe it gets easier once you get more amps, etc.) I had trouble even getting bronze on a lot of them.

- Like the best open world games, it starts off limited in scope and slowly reveals new layers that expand the complexity. I can already tell I'm going to have a TON of fun trying to unlock everything.

- The weapons are awesome and really make you want to buy them as soon as possible to try them out. The shooting is very forgiving - basically as long as you're pointed in the general direction of the monster it will throw a target up on it and shooting will kind of auto-hit it. However, due to the number of enemies, the amount of damage they can do, and the speed at which they move, it's certainly not a cakewalk even with the assist.

- To show you how good the character creation is, I spent $6500 on a bikini for my avatar. Partly because I'm a perv, and partly because it just matched her jean shorts so well.  unibrow
