So here's an interesting question for everyone about the Wii's Virtual Console:
Let's say that all Virtual Console games are priced to where you will buy them (as in they aren't free, but they're at that magical price point where you have no problem tossing your money at Nintendo for it). Also, all games that were ever released in the US on the NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, and TG-16 are available to purchase. What games would you buy?
Now I don't want to hear anything about prices, or if you're going to get a Wii or not. I just want to see a list of games that you'd love to own again (or for the first time). Basically, I'm curious as to how popular the Virtual Console will be.
I'm still working on my list, so I'll get back to you in a bit.

I honestly have very few when it comes down to it. Nostalgia is great and all but it only goes so far. I would like Contra, Super Metroid and some of the old NES/SNES RPG's but that is about it.

Assuming a "purchase" is a remembered download that, were anything to happen to my stored data, I'd be able to re-download without repurchasing, and don't have to be online for the games to run (i.e. no NWN Premium Module authentication type of stuff; give me the Live Arcade style of service instead), well... I don't even want to imagine how much I'd spend on this over the long-term.
Immediate purchases:
Super Metroid Secret of Mana Dragon Warrior IV Yoshi's Island Castlevania III Startropics Super Mario RPG Ninja Gaiden 2 Chrono Trigger (this in spite of still owning an SNES and the game; same for Super Metroid - I'd just love to be able to play them without having to get the SNES hooked up)

Gain Ground (My favorite Genesis game)
it was my favorite arcade game... the genesis version just didn't hold up for me. I'm not sure what I would buy, nostalgia only goes so far for me. The classic collections have always disappointed me.

The classic collections have always disappointed me. I agree. It has always been my feeling that playing the classics again always ruins my memories of them. I prefer to keep them in the past. But Techmo Bowl tournaments with the buddies on the big screen TV would kick ass. I'm hoping Microsoft adds that to XBLA. If they did I may not get a Wii for a while. None of Nintendo's first party franchises except Smash Bros excite me that much anymore.

My kneejerks:
N64:
-Majora's Mask -Paper Mario -Blast Corps -If they get really obscure stuff, there's this weird pseudo-Zelda game, heavy Asian influence, that came out near the beginning of the system's life... you were like a little pudgy blue-clad ninja, I think?
SNES:
-Earthbound -Chrono Trigger -FFVI -Super Mario RPG -any Dragon Warrior games -any RPGs I missed (7th Saga, Lufia, ohpleaseportStarOcean)
Genesis:
-All the Shining Forces -Phantasy Star IV -Gunstar Heroes
TG16:
-Ys 1&2
NES:
-Nada, I've played everything on this system that I'd be interested in.

Definitely Super Metroid. If that one isn't available at launch, I will have issues.
Bionic Commando was a cinch until I found out I can play it on my DS/GBA next month.
Maybe Mario 64, so I can play it with an analog stick.... (as an aside, I really hope we can use our GCN controllers for the VC stuff. That classic controller is too much like the PS1/PS2 controller for my tastes. I don't like the left analog stick down there. (oooh that sounds dirty! ewwwww))
As for stuff I have NOT played yet...
Mario RPG Paper Mario 1 CHRONO TRIGGER~! (hope this one is on there, and if not, PORT IT TO THE GBA/DS~!) Ultima: Black Gate (I have a perverse desire to see how badly this was butchered for the SNES... Hell, it's still probably better than Ultimas 8 or 9...)
I am sure there will be many others.

Honestly, after thinking about it for a while, there's only one game I can come up with.... Street Fighter Part I for Tg-16 CD. It's downright weird how no other console has ever come out with a version of the first part in the SF series. It wasn't even included in the recent Street Fighter compilation. Anyone know why this is? I have a copy for the PC, but I want a console one dammit!

Was that the Legend of the Mystical Ninja game? With this funky guy in some of the towns you visit who shouts out "PU-LA-ZA-MA!" (plasma) as he shoots into the screen from the background? And with giant robot ninja boxing fights? I thought that game was great, even though I got stuck partway through.

I'm hoping eventually they add support to play co-op or 2p online on the old games (like most of the pc emus do).
Co-op River City Random, baby!

LE: Blast Corps is such an underrated, fun game.
Don't know how much replay value it really has, though, to make me want to plunk down the money for the Virtual Console version.
As for what I'd buy? Probably a couple of the can't miss games from all the systems I didn't play growing up. Super Metroid for sure!

This thread got me thinking. I will be purchasing some old games no doubt, but it still makes me wonder what will happen after the wii is old school, gen-old, will I still be able to play these games. Being older, loving side scrollers and wanting old school games this will be my list I can think of:
Secret of Mana Mike Tysons Punch Out Bonk Zelda - all of them... Metroid - all Sonic Samurai Shodown Faxanadu SNES version of the S Mario Bros. Double Dribble Kid Icarus Castlevania - all, especially symphony of the night if available The Boy and His Blob Zombies Ate My Neighbors Hydide Mortal Kombat - we will see what is available
If I keep thinking the list will go on and on.

I agree. Not to mention, all of those and more I already own on Dreamcast emulators. I wouldn't buy a single one, I leave old games behind when and where possible, they just don't have the same "Magic" when I go back to them.

I'm looking forward to what the Wii can do and not back to what Nintendo has already done.
Let me ask you guys a question: Would you buy a Wii if all you could do was play old Nintendo games?

If it was just a buck or two a game, I could see myself paying $70-80 for it.

Of course not. And I really doubt anyone would pay $400 for a 360 if all they could do was play Xbox Live Arcade games. We buy the consoles for the current games made specifically for it but the ability to play other "retro" or smaller games on it is a nice bonus.

yes/no. It would all depends on the price of the system and the price of the games.

I'm with Devil. Looking forward to playing the new games on Wii, rather than games I've already played years ago. I'm sure at some point I'll bite for some nostalgia factor, but the VC is not a feature of the console I'm much interested in, as neat as it is.

At $200, no. At less than a $100 with a substantial VC library, then yes. Thankfully I'm buying the Wii on the basis of Nintendo's first party track record, so the VC is pretty much purely a bonus for me.

Warning - From the responses here, I'm not sure Nintendo doesn't have the market for a lower priced system that JUST plays old games - In addition to the systems they already have that CAN play old games. Just a thought I had while reading the excitement over 15 year old software.

I understand you. The Gamecube was my first Nintendo console (Sega Genesis FTW!) so I don't have much attachment to them but there are people who love Nintendo's older games to death and would love to be able to play them all on one system.

I wouldn't buy it just for the classic games, eventhough I think Nintendo has a market for that. I won't lie though, the idea of playing TG 16 games pushed from interested into day one purchase. Magic Engine costs money on the Pc, and I'd rather own the games legally, so it is enticing. I am also interested in the new content Nintendo is developing.

I didn't have a SNES or N64 at the time of their release (I have bought both in the past few years though) so for me it's not nostalgia at all- I think there are tons of legitimately good to great games from that period that still hold up and, thanks to nice 2D art, haven't aged nearly as poorly as early 3D games.

And that's insane. Emulators should never cost money, as they're already questionable enough (but legal with few exceptions) as it is.
