Want a Wii but can't find one anywhere? It's time to pay Gamestop a visit. Via Wired:

Quote
To help assuage consumers' complaints that they can't find a Wii, Nintendo announced this morning that they will begin a 'Wii Raincheck' program. If you pay in full for a Wii before Christmas, you can get a raincheck that you'll be able to redeem for a Wii in January.

Fils-Aime said that the program will be run entirely through retailer GameStop, who he says has "many tens of thousands" of certificates.

The program, says Fils-Aime, is for people who want "something to put under the tree."

"A certificate needs to be matched to a specific Wii which needs to be matched to a specific store. Only this retailer has the ability to pull off such a program," said Fils-Aime in regards to why GameStop will be the exclusive partner for this initiative.

Interesting. And a good way to get yourself into the 'line' to buy a Wii.

Wow... so it's a complex scheme for Gamestopo to force presale orders.  Why am I not surprised?

Wii rainchecks sounds like a knee-jerk reaction to Nintendo coming up short this holiday season. Can't blame them though, angry parents during the holidays is an ugly thing.

That, and that report came out saying that they were going to lose out on $1.3 billion in sales due to shortages.  This will at least make up for some of those sales, methinks.

It's amazing that around 1 million sold in a month (Nov) isn't enough. How many could they sell? 2 million? more?

It's pretty much the #1 sought-after gift this year, so I'd say, yeah.  They'd probably sell out of however many they could possibly make at this point.

I think a Gamestop exec said that they thought there was current demand for three times what they are producing.

The last thing we need is Gamestop holding all the cards for people who want a Wii.

HUGE MAJOR CAVEAT - Assuming that both Nintendo and Gamestop can deliver on these "rain checks" in January - /end HUGE MAJOR CAVEAT...

...I think this is actually pretty cool.  Sure it's just another pre-sell for Gamestop, but all parties could have just as easily told consumers, "tough shit, deal with it".  At least they're making some sort of effort.

B&M Gamestop stores don't sell bundles. Only the online store does that.
I'm not entirely certain how I feel about this. I think it has plusses and minuses.
I hope that on the plus side it will give people an option rather than paying a big
premium on ebay.

Uh...no. No one is being forced to do anything. I have dozens of people every day who
would gladly put money down to get a system. This is a way for some of them to do that.

I didn't say it wouldn't work, or that customers wouldn't want it.  Heck, I even recommended it to a coworker about 20 minutes ago.

I'm just saying that, since Gamestopo seems to be moving to a "pre-order sales only" business model, this kind of fits into their (evil?) plan perfectly.
