i traded in some games of mine for this recently, and forgot how much i liked it. it's very much more puzzle-y than i remember. it is impossible to get past the third map if you don't read the manual - you need to understand Zone of Control and surround tactics to get anywhere in the game.

loved this game when I was 12. Finished, have it on the Virtual Console for nostalgia, and now I want to fire it up.

I was totally addicted to this as well.   My sister and I used to play the vs. version of every map over and over.  It was actually out on iOS as well but seems to have vanished now.

the remake is there - look up Neo Nectaris.

i think the hex shape, at minimum, is essential for tactical-turn-based games - even the casual ones.. i don't care for squares (as in Advance Wars). but if i ever get around to making my game, i'm gonna think about using octagons.
