I think this is a little too bizarre to be true, but there's a thread at NeoGAF listing details for the next Tomb Raider game - an open world survival horror game  saywhat

It wouldn't surprise me if CD went this way. IMO TR Underworld was the best in the series and it more or less completed the story arc. I can actually see Lara working as a survival horror protragonist, but the game will fall flat if the enemies are the standard zombie fare.

Well, I like the new look of Lara, but I also kind of liked the more cartoonish Lara from Legend.  Both work for me since the cartoonish version was just that.  This more realistic version of her is still very attractive, let's just hope that carries through into her personality in game.

I don't think they'll make it that survival horror focused, but it will probably take elements from it.  After all, being trapped in an ancient tomb with magical horrors sounds like survival horror, until you throw in Tomb Raider style platforming.

Hm... what was that movie with a bunch of female spelunkers trapped in a cave with some monsters?  Makes a good premise for any new Tomb Raider game.

scroll down a bit in the thread you linked to.  I missed them the first time.  there's also a translation of the German which says it's a young and inexperience Lara this time.  prequel!

Quote
When a sudden storm destroys her research vessel, a young and inexperienced Lara Croft finds herself stranded on a mysterious and remote island hiden of the shores of Japan. Despite several signs of various inhabitants the island is oddly deserted, and an uneasy feeling settles in as strange sounds emerge from the shadows. With only her deterination, inner streinght, and resourcefulness to help her, Lara must overcome the chalnges of a harsh and unforgiving jorney that will take her across a vast island wilderness and deep into the claustrophobic and menacing underground tombs from the island's past. As she struggles to prevalil through brutal combat encounters and trecherous exploration, Lara will be pushed to her limits and forced to adapt to her situation in order to survive and escape from the lethal predators that stalk her every move.

Hunt or be hunted: Evade outsmart, track and kill the mysterious enemies that hunt you as prey

Survival Action: Brutally attack and defend as you fight gto survive through visceral one on one mlee combat.

Strategic Weapons: Gain an advantage in combat by finding an array ofdifferent mlee and ranged weapons including a variety of guns and the hunters ultimate weapon, the bow.

Creative Survival: React and adapto to teh island by using only that wich you can salvage from the enviroment like climbing axes, rope, and machetes that can be used to unlock new traversal and combat gameplay options.

Free Movement: Scrale up a vertical cliff wall, sprint and leap across a huge chasm, steer mid air to land a misderected jump there is no one right way to traverse, survive, and explore the harsh enviroment of the island.

One Cohesive World: The diverse multi region island is an open playground alive with creatures, weather and natural events.

Origin Story: This new Tomb Raider concept reboots the franchise by exploring the orgins of Lara Croft's transformation into a hardened adventurer as unravel the story behind the island's misterious past.

looks like two of those creatures are from The Ring and Dead Space

I like the idea of an open world, but I sure hope they do better with the controls then was done in underworld.  I *really* struggled with the controls for that one on the PS3.

hmm, those creatures do look interesting for Lara Croft...wonder if it will still have me falling into the Abyss when i don't make a jump properly ...the controls for Lara Croft wouldn't exactly make me excited for being able to 'Evade outsmart, track and kill the mysterious enemies'..if its the usual TR controls i can run away in a straight line,if thats okay?..if i have to turn while running,i'm screwed

Considering I've enjoyed just about every Resident Evil game including those with the legacy +pad tank controls, I definitely think I can handle a survival horror game with TR controls. IN day 1.

Considering that it sounds like the game will be somewhat open world, I'm kinda hoping for a bit of interesting multiplayer modes that's just as much co-op as competitive.

more action this time around will be great assuming they get a decent cover and shoot mechanism.  i really hope the bow on her back is used throughout the game.  add a little stalking aspect in.

Reminds of that bit of dialog between Nate and Chloe in Uncharted 2 where you jump into the water in the Nepalese Temple.

World Exclusive trailer -June 3rd

Quote
Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix are teasing a "world exclusive reveal" trailer for Tomb Raider, set to appear online on Friday, June 3.

The trailer's set to be an all-CGI affair, and you can see two teaser shots of it on this very page.

so,no gameplay will be seen in this upcoming trailer, which is a shame, can we expect to see it at E3,a few days later?..doubtful,my guess is they would of put it in the trailer, instead of showing it separately a few days later, but you never know

Arggh, curse this server move - it wiped out my post featuring my deduction that the game is set in Japan.  mad So for a recap - the latest video trailer has Lara gazing at a map of the Japanese islands on her cabin wall and on a desk marked in think ink,  is a paperwith the UTM coordinates (53 712541 3416095) for the Kisan seamounts region near the island of Honshu. It'll be interesting to see if a decent portion of the game is set in that area, unfortunately we'll have to wait until Fall of 2012 to find out. frown

It does look quite a bit like Uncharted 2. Loved it too, though it does make me wonder what the game will be like and what the connections will be with the original series. For example, her voice sounds completely different. Is she even british anymore? She also looks more like one of Drake's girlfriends.
