So I know nothing about this game, but the reviews are awesome.

Anybody planning on picking up this bad boy? If so, please post impressions!

I played it.  The graphics are phenomenal, probably the best the PSP has to offer.  I didnt like the gameplay though.  I've never been a huge fan of fighting games and especially Tekken.  See, I used to go to this friends house that had Tekken 1 on the PS1 and instead of teaching me how to play it, he would just kick my ass by doing some combo he had practiced a million times over and over.  This super fun experience has kind of ruined the whole idea of Tekken for me.

Anyway, fast forward to the PSP version and you have the same fundamental gameplay that just doesnt do it for me.  That and it is really hard to get a diagonal movement with the PSP's dpad.  Like I said though, looks amazing!

Got the call yesterday that it would be in today...

Thing is, I know exactly what to expect from it...and I'm not sure I'm ready and willing to dive into a Tekken game, since I pretty much hate the series in general.

Got it paid off in full, so it's tempting...but I may just switch the money over to a Dead Rising preorder biggrin

Impressions:
So far, I'm extremely impressed - this is the best fighting game I've played since Soul Calibur 3 (and much better than DOA4 was).  It's hard to believe that this is a handheld game - there is so much polish and sheen on this title and so many options its almost mindblowing.

Presentation:
Awesome for the most part.  The menus can be a little hard to navigate sometimes, as there are some screens that have no 'back button', and other screens with weird confirmation dialogue boxes.  Those nitpicks aside, the rest of the game impresses with its presentation.  Great CGI endings for all characters (and there's a ton of characters), great artwork, a wealth of statistics, tons of unlockables, fighter customization - the list goes on and on.  I like the fact that you can buy the intros/endings if you're too lazy to actually play a character thru the story mode.

One of the coolest parts of the game is the ranking system - you challenge other virtual 'players' in both the arcade and dojo modes, each of which have different styles and rankings.  Win enough fight, and your own ranking goes up.  You can upload your own fighting style online for others to try out, or you can download other friends/players who will show up in the arcade modes as other players.  There appears to be a crapload of minigames as well which I haven't tried...

Graphics:
Easily the highlight of the title - this is the best looking title available on the PSP bar none.  I agree with Gamespot giving this game a 10 in graphics - absolutely phenominal character models, arenas, and special effects.  I find myself watching the fight replays regularly just to enjoy the pretty scenery.

Sound:
Your normal fighting game type of sound effects, plus the weird little voice phrases that every character mutters.   That said, the music is really darn good and even great in a few places.

Gameplay:
Well, it's Tekken so you know what you're getting coming in.  Some of the multiple button presses can be kind of hard in the thick of battle, and the diagonal directions are really difficult to do on the PSP's d-pad but other then that it's a pretty enjoyable brawler.  I haven't really played the last few entires of Tekken so I'm not sure how it compares, but so far I like it.  Some characters seem much easier to play than others, and the end boss can be really cheap - but overall I'm having fun with it.  There are a staggering amount of different game modes, and a lot of them (like the dojo mode mentioned above) are extremely deep.

Overall, I'd say that this just isn't the best handheld fighting game around but probably the overall best fighting game released in the last year or two.  The depth of the game is staggering - I usually get bored of fighting games quickly, but there is so much to do here that I can see me getting a lot of miles out of this one.  9.5/10

I agree with Dimmona.  It's a great, great game.  It looks incredibly good - I have no idea how they pulled it off.

The overwhelming amount of characters available is sort of daunting!!

I haven't played much of any Tekken games, a sprinkling here and there, but wow, you really gotta input those combo's fast, don't you?  I sort of have to roll my thumb over square --> triangle, etc.

Hopped online...grabbed a couple wallpapers biggrin

I am digging it!!

WTF.  I preordered the game at my local Gamestop and received no little stick on thing.  What the hell!

Honestly, at first, diagonals and whatever were pretty tough...but the more I played (and I played quiiiiite a bit), the easier it got.

It's hard after playing like, 20 hours of DoA4 and learning THAT battle system and switching to a new one biggrin  I had just learned that one!  I kept trying to hold a button to block     BLAST, DoA!

I really, really enjoy this game.  And that says A LOT for a fighting game fan who pretty much dismissed every Tekken he ever played.  This game certainly feels like Tekken, but it feels more polished, more competitive, better balanced...AND FUN with all the game modes.

Wow, I booted it up this morning and was met with a message saying that 3 new game modes had mysteriously unlocked (Command Attack, and a few others).

The amount of stuff packed into this game is insane....

You vagabond!

No, no, no, I'm in the 1,000's for some of the modes that comprise the main ranking, so more than that!

For instance, I am awful at Tekken Bowling.

( : Yes, your Tekken Bowling score factors into your main rank, hehe)

In a normal game of bowling, yes...but the actual gametype of bowling that is counted towards your rank is called something like Strike Force where essentially strikes are the only way to get meaningful points.

I'm nowhere near 300 points in that mode biggrin

It is... which is why I was suprised that I was able to bowl nothing but strikes on my first try - just aim up the middle, launch at 100%, and bang.  I probably just got lucky, but it made me never want to play Tekken Bowling again smile

As a side note - I made more $$ during that one quick game than I did playing 10 fights in the arcade/story/dojo/etc. modes.  I can see it as a great way to make money.

Nope, no online fighting (only ad hoc mode).  You can go online and download other people's "ghosts" to fight, as well as downloadable content like wallpaper and such, but no true online multiplayer.  I'm not suprised since no other verison of Tekken has ever had it....

OMG! This shit is insanely good! I just got my copy this afternoon had lunch, sat down to practice a bit. Armor King feels like he did in Tekken 2, not the same exactly but close enough.

So I did a little practice to familarize myself with his new moves and what not. The air throws are a bit tough but doable, so with this new technique in mind I started story.

I breezed through my first 5 matches no problems. Then ran into Jin, who tore me a new one. Finally got past him, then whoops devil Jin. He was loads of fun. He kicked my ass for a bit, till finally I just kept air juggling him otherwise he'd just destroy me with his strikes.

Then onto Jinpachi aside from looking like a total bad ass, he was a pussy cat. Had no problems with him, took him out the first time through.

Anyways I can't recommend this game enough it's just that good.

I've never played a Tekken game.  Can I learn on this one, or is it just too adapted to the 'air-juggling' style for a newbie to learn it?
