The way I read that article, they posted all the 2.80 features and then the last thing they posted was what was new to 2.81, which is a security fix.  I am staying at 2.8, I think and maybe hoping they crack it there, so I can do some homebrew.  That way, I might actually do something with my PSP these days (though I did enjoy Valkyrie profile while my DS was on its month-long journey to and from Japan).

Yeah they recently cracked 2.80 so all 2.81 does is patch the security hole.

Reports indicate that the 2.8 decrypter also works on 2.81.

Wait, so I can downgrade to 1.5 from a 2.8 PSP now?  If so, PM me with details on what I need to know to get this done.

Nope.  But if you have 1.5 firmware then there are (probably shady & illegal) ways to emulate 2.80 firmware and run current games.

The newer PSPs on the market cannot be downgraded to 1.5 due to changes in the motherboard.  Only models that could have been 1.5 originally (the newer ones start at 2.0 or 2.5) can be downgraded.

Mine was originally 1.5, so I shouldn't have a problem there.  I bought it on launch day.  I just need a way to downgrade.  Looks like I will have to wait.

I thought Sony started changing the motherboards on the PSP on the ones that came with 2.5, not 2.0. I have a picture somewhere that also shows what motherboard is included, but I'm at work and have no access to it.

As of last check, you can emulate 2.71 right now, which is what you need in order to run all current games.

Yes, but my problem is that since I am at 2.8 right now, I don't think I have a way to get back to 1.5, do I?

Nope.  But if you hold off updating your firmware they will eventually release a downgrader for 2.8 -> 1.5.  Of course downgrading your firmware is risky and you can render your PSP useless ("bricking it").

Yeah, I did it once before back around the 2.0 days, but ended up upgrading when GTA came out because it required a certain version to play the music files.  I kept upgrading ever since because I liked the features it added, but as I realize I don't really ever use this things to play games, much less browse the web, watch videos, or listen to music on it, maybe there are some interesting applications out there that I will use it for.  Plus, if I can take the games I do buy, rip them, and put them on a memory stick to cut down load times, that is probably my big justification.  A lot of the reason I pass the thing is over is because there a few games with no load times.

I remember reading that there was a program out there that could do that for you. I don't have a clue what it's called though off hand.
