If anyone is worried that we're going to run out of new systems for players to explore, here's from the latest newsletter:

Quote
So far an incredible 11.3 million systems have been explored by players. At the current rate of play the Elite: Dangerous community will have charted the galaxy's 400 billion star systems in 23,417 years. We'll be finished by the year 25,432, so here's hoping 255th century computers are PC compatible.

Yeah, the galaxy is huge.

Is anyone still playing this?  It's on sale for Gold members for $18.75, and I'm wondering if it's worth it.

I backed away from it because I heard it was complicated and took a lot of hours before you could start settling into it (with little help from the tutorials).  Honestly, I don't know that I'll be able to hunker down for an extended period, but I am still curious about the game.

How do/did people like it?

I'm not currently playing it, but with my Oculus Rift and the upcoming GTX 1080 upgrade I'm planning to buy, I'll be heading straight back in. Part of why I'm waiting is also because I want to save the experience for when the Engineers update is out, which should make for some great improvements to the game from what I'm hearing.

I never felt like Elite Dangerous is complicated. Sure, there can be a lot of controls to master, but you don't need to grasp them all right away, especially with a HOTAS. Just do two or three basic tutorials, and you'll be ready to head out there and do whatever you like. I suspect anyone who claims the game is complicated is talking about trying to grasp every single concept in the game, which isn't at all necessary. I've played the game for many, many hours and have barely even touched combat or exploration, being more of a trader.

Just be sure to watch a few tutorials (especially around docking and warp speed traveling), and you'll probably be able to pick up the rest pretty quickly.

Well, problem one is that I don't have a HOTAS for the Xbone (which sounds like a medical ailment).

I know that Elite is going to be a better experience on PC, but I don't really have much interest playing it there.  Has anyone tried this on console?

I've played the XB1 version some. Would have played more, but got distracted by other games.

I enjoyed it a lot. Plays fine with the controller, and you can customize it as you want.

Once they put the Horizons expansion on the XB1 (it is coming) I will get back into it again.

I played through the tutorials of the demo (which I had downloaded and never even tried) and decided it was cool enough for sub $20.

I fired up the main game, picked one of the two missions (the one that didn't look like a spam email), flew to hyperspace or STD or whatever range and was told that I didn't have the fuel to get to where I wanted to go.

I had tried to make heads or tails of the map before that (even watched the tutorial video on it), but clearly I couldn't.

The sense of flying in space is just incredible.  The systems and menus for getting stuff done is just awful.

Anyway, I'll give it another try after watching yet more tutorial videos, but it's more frustrating than I wanted, for sure.

It sounds like Rebel Galaxy may be more of what your looking for.  It's simpler.  It's got a relatively short campaign.  It's available on the XBone.  It still scratches that space adventure itch.  I'm not saying it's a better game, but it may be closer to what you'd like.

Yeah, I was circling that one for a while, too.

It's not that I'm against the complex space sim.  As I said, I actually like the controls.  The docking procedure is long and fiddly, but it's so cool that it doesn't matter.  It might over time, of course...

But to make the subsystems so obtuse is beyond me.  It's already dry material and a complex economy, why make delving into that stuff such a headache?
