While every Crusader skill is fun and viable imho, my Set du Jour most often (L49):

-Smite [primary=LMB]
http://us.battle.net/d3/en/class/crusader/active/smite

-Blessed Hammer [secondary=RMB]
http://us.battle.net/d3/en/class/crusader/active/blessed-hammer

[NOTE: Keys are configurable, this is the default and I've been OK with it, fwiw]
-Shield Glare [defensive=1 key]
http://us.battle.net/d3/en/class/crusader/active/shield-glare
*I like the "Zealous Glare" variant, which gains 9 wrath [resource used for active attacks] for each target blinded

-Laws of Valor [law=2 key]
http://us.battle.net/d3/en/class/crusader/active/laws-of-valor

-Heaven's Fury [conviction=3 key]
http://us.battle.net/d3/en/class/crusader/active/heavens-fury
*I love Falling Sword too (http://us.battle.net/d3/en/class/crusader/active/#type=conviction), but found Heaven's Fury more useful as I tackled larger hordes into Act V.

-Phalanx [utility=4 key]
http://us.battle.net/d3/en/class/crusader/active/phalanx
*Usually favoring Bowmen but it's fun/useful to try all the rune modifiers.

*I'm sure all my preferences on these may change as I move up in levels and try tougher difficulties beyond Expert. Some of the skills I'm not favoring right now are more about buffing up defense, resistances, etc. I suspect my guy will need those eventually.  icon_smile

OK. Portions of Act V are, in fact, making my low 50s Crusader sweat a bit on Expert difficulty.  Bring your own! I even died once.  We put the fun in funeral

I can't remember the exact build from my crusader but I was lucky enough to get the flail and shield combo that allowed me to toss the shield into battle and it just ricochet back and forth doing hundreds of K to millions of crit  damage in the meantime. Kinda cheesy but was still fun smile

The gameplay looked something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_P9UJdORRv0

I leveled my Crusader to 70 last night and made a nice little Lightning build. I have an epic gem that turns me into a walking conducting pylon, a bunch of gear that adds to my lightning damage and a flail that turns my foes to allies with Akarreats Champion.

That coupled with my archery phalanx allows me to march an veritable army through the rifts, casting lightning as I go (even my blessed hammers are charged).

I seem to have met my match in Act V with Adria: The Witch (aka Spider-Woman). Any ideas? I've tried everything in my L54 Crusader toolbox, and seem wholly unable to bring her health meter below maybe 70%. Then the stupid heart slugs (or whatever) fill up the screen. If she has a weakness, I can't find it.

Nobody on bnet seems to join open multiplayer games anymore (presumably the only people left playing are L70 players now) so it doesn't seem like I can get any help on this that way.

I guess I'll Google it but thought I'd ask in case anyone here even remembers playing through Acts anymore.  icon_smile

I guess I knew sooner or later D3 would go back to pissing me off and frustrating me. Nothing like a love-hate relationship.  icon_neutral

I don't know if the PC and console versions differ in leveling speed, but you seem really low-level for that fight.  I was already at 70 and had gained a few paragon levels by that point.  You could try gaining some levels or crafting some new gear.

Don't be afraid to lower the difficulty for a fight you are having trouble getting through.  I think i remember having to bump it down for that fight myself the first time through, then jacked it back up right after.  The Act V bosses are all long and tough.

Thanks, guys. Sorry -- I get into Whiny Baby mode sometimes as you veterans know.  crybaby icon_razz

While Soulchilde kindly offered to help last night, I spent the evening playing my Barbarian-ess (now L40, and in Act V). Forgot how much fun that class is too.

Although I know better than to play PC games in the morning, I logged in, took the coward's way out -- turned difficulty to Normal -- and tried spamming her with "Phalanx Stampede" skill:
Quote
Summon warhorses that deal 490% weapon damage and have a 30% chance to Stun enemies for 2 seconds.
I don't know if it would've helped on the Legendary/Expert difficulties, but on Normal that let me keep her at bay enough to wear her down steadily. Spat up a really nice legendary 2 hand sword.

Maybe at some I'll try another run at the boss witch at higher difficulty -- her lair is just adjacent to a waypoint so it's really easy to do repeated runs without having to crawl through an entire dungeon area to reach it.

As much as I like the Archers, I find the Stampede is really helpful for knocking bosses off track and helping stay out of trouble in the later story game. And you can spam-click it repeatedly as long as you have wrath built up.

I'd still love to play with others. Just the whole Bnet in general doesn't seem to be doing MP anymore. I tried matchmaking repeatedly and never get connected to anything. Throw up an open one, no one joins. I remain unconvinced that D3's switch away from the first couple games of simply throwing up a game with a simple name on it (still the way that Grim Dawn, Torchlight II et al handle it as well) is an improvement from a socializing aspect. I don't know if that's any different with Adventure Mode games or the L70 play.

I think the issue is your low level.  Outside of Seasons or Hardcore I think most people have hit 70 with many levels of Paragon at this point.  I have every class at 70 and 340somethign Paragon.

What platform you on Blackjack?
PC.

I was going to lament the demise of the whole multiplatform multiplayer gaming dream. Given that Diablo 3 on console was designed differently to make best use of the platform and controls and essentially is a different game... re:

Console Differences (Updated List)
http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/9882708462

It would obviously be impossible to do multi-platform in this case, so I can't hardly use the game as a basis for that lament.  icon_smile

=====================
Yes about everyone apparently only playing their level cap characters. imho the expansion focusing on end game is sort of a zero sum thing because it gives no carrot to replay the story line stuff so essentially it makes the game servers appear empty until you reach the cap. It gives an entertaining end game treadmill (rifts, rifts, and then I see everyone at forums complaining there's nothing else to do) apparently for a certain amount of fun time.

I can't really wail about gamer preferences changing. Except I guess in my days of Diablo I and II, maybe even in terms of City of Heroes for the few months before WoW launched and stole its thunder, is people seemed to play more in those days because the act of playing was fun, act of splurching monsters and doing so through fun, mostly randomized environments (D1, D2, I mean; not COH) was fun. And it wasn't necessarily only to reach the cap and then just keep expecting the game to spit out end game loot repeatedly like a Pez dispenser.

It just doesn't seem like gamers actually enjoy playing games anymore. They don't enjoy the journey, that is. They want to reach the end and get all the best stuff, and then complain about it not really being the best stuff, and nothing new to do, why should I continue playing? This seemed similar to how people reacted to Arrowhead's Gauntlet reboot. Race through the levels, complain there's "nothing new to do" and then stop playing.

At least that's what I glean from the official forums. Perhaps they don't necessarily represent a broad enough view, and I'm oversimplifying the gaming world today.  icon_smile

But I hope to reach L70 and then maybe I'll eat my words.  icon_razz

As much as I like Diablo 3, I said it long ago but once the vision for the game moved away from a number of the things that many D2 fans loved, this was more or less inevitable.  D3 was designed from a skills standpoint so that you would never have to reroll, and I think many people like that style.  But because of that flexibility, you lose the subset of gameplay that involves committing to concrete build choices and sticking with them, and everything that goes along with that style of game.  I completely lost count of the amount of times I started a brand new build with a concept in mind in D2.  But each time I did that, I'd go through the entire game again.  Sometimes people would skip me through portions or I'd get power-leveled, but more often than not, the group I played with would always go through the full game again.  And again, and again.  And it was fun.  I don't think anyone ever got to max level, so there was always that small carrot dangling, and good loot just seemed so much more precious.  In D3 it really is like a pez dispenser and so much of it is just dumped, even legendaries.

In an odd way, I think D3 just gives players too much, too easily, without consequence or commitment, and that ultimately ends up hurting its longevity.

It only took 6 hours or so to level to 70 before and now with the Gem of Ease it is under 3 hours from lvl 1-70 on frsh character.  It's very much all about 70 and adventure mode/rifts/grifts

Stick a fork in me.  icon_razz

Not quite what I was using at the end, the last skill listed I was using in Adventure Mode, trying that briefly last night.

I'm sort of coming to terms with the idea that I'm approaching age 50 now, and my D1/2 memories were when I was about 32 and 35. Virtually all the pals I played those games with then no longer game regularly due to family commitments. So to some extent when I lament the change of the gamer base, I've simply outlasted my peers in PC gaming and am whistling in a graveyard. I sound like Debbie Downer. icon_smile

So I guess I'm at peace with just enjoying D3 like a fun single player ARPG, and enjoying the "AI groupness" of the Followers and the temporary avatar skills and such. I'm enjoying it, and glad I finally made it back to Blizzard-ville.  icon_smile

If you keep playing adventure mode I think you will find it quite easy to group with randoms while doing rifts and bounties.  On the console I regularly jump in coop games for even 10 minutes.

Finally Rifted...

This Guardian boss finally made me break a sweat, as I was unable to get her to move out of this narrow corridor. She kept dropping the stone wall stuff around me. I eventually retreated, and found that Steed phalanx useful (since it lets you break through anything briefly).

True, but the expansion only launched on PC in March 2014; and on consoles in August 2014 (from what I can tell online).

Many GTers on my battle.net friends list haven't been on bnet in 1-2 years, so they probably don't even know about the changes, much less the expansion. I was too irked about my authenticator issues to be bothered to pay much attention to the expansion or overhaul of the initial release.

So hopefully my screenies/impressions are maybe useful to the various folks who like me had abandoned the game by, say, late 2013. I'm not sure it'll convince anyone to return. I think a lot of folks simply wanted Diablo II re-made with pretty graphics and no other changes (similar to many folks' feelings about Firaxis take on XCOM). Or at the least for the skills system to work identically. Loot 2.0, Rifts, Seasons, Crusader class, expansions -- and of course (to most people) removing the Auction House -- all good stuff but not really going to change the minds of anyone who simply wanted "Diablo II 2.0."

I guess it's interesting that now some companies are attempting to do just that (i.e., put a fresh coat of point on classic releases and re-release them rather than "reboot" them or sequelize them) -- see upcoming Grim Fandango and Homeworld HD releases for example. I wonder how a "Diablo II HD" might've gone over.  icon_smile And of course one can always wonder if David Brevik (Marvel Heroes) and co. had stuck around instead of leaving to do Hellgate, how their D3 take might've differed from Jay Wilson and Co.'s.

To me the D3 skills system is good if you don't like rolling alt characters, and if you like to be able on the fly (at least, when not in combat mode) switch up all your skills without having to jump through some sort of respec hoops.

I did on D2 have multiple builds of each class (a bow Amazon, a spear amazon; a dual wield barbarian, a two-handed weapon barbarian; etc. etc.). But I also simply invested a lot more hours in gaming in 2000-2001 than in recent years. Despite my job then being way more of a time sink. So I don't know if I played all those builds so much because of D2's skills system encouraging that, or because I simply was more willing to sink hours into a game playing multiple builds then.  icon_smile

Blackjack, I didn't mean to stop posting. I just thought it was funny because you usually you post screenshots/stories of games that people haven't really played (which has made me buy a couple of games), but this time you were posting about a very popular game. I still liked seeing how you were doing in it.

So a couple times I have gone into a game or had someone join my game and just boost my character like crazy.  They will start a rift trial and own everything so we all get a rift 100 stone and then they just PLOW through the rift, so fast I can't even keep up with them.  I literally would gain a paragon level every 2 seconds and after going through this a couple times I have 4 BILLION gold.  They have 25 million + DPS.  This is on PS4.  How are people able to get this high of DPS?  I saw a guy yesterday with a yellow weapon that had 24 million DPS!  My DH is geared pretty good and I still only have 1.5 million DPS and I can't see how to increase it anymore.  What are people doing to get this much DPS??

They are cheating and duping.  Has something to do with them allowing imported saves.

The main reason to only play with people you know on console.

24 mil DPS on a weapon?  eek

When I was playing on the PC I think my highest was 3400 (give or take) DPS? I believe I maxed out around 450k DPS and 6.5 mil toughness for my entire build and I was 245 paragon.

I joined a friends game and he had someone in his game that was obviously a cheat, I left right away.  It's a shame they didn't go with server side inventory on the consoles imo.
