so I got a copy of this last night and got a chance to play around.  think Minecraft with voxels and a more realistic take on construction, a heavier focus on survival and getting food and water and zombies that break down doors and weak structures.

It's still in alpha so there's a lot left to make, like the map creation hasn't been done and obviously, there are any number of little issues to iron out.  I'll say that at this point, it nails the atmosphere and the tension.  we ran around and after starting in a barren area with no resources and fast zeds, we restarted and actually managed to make it through a night.

the crafting system is quite deep once you get further in and you can make some impressive structures.  or you can attempt the nomadic life and move from house to house.

This game is definitely on my high interest list and is one of the things that finally pushed me to ordering a new computer. I'm tempted to get it while it's on sale, but I'm looking for more impressions first.

I'll post them when I get more time with it.

small note, the sale ends on 2/14.  it works out to 16.75 if you get another person interested in splitting the two pack, which is half the normal price.

short experience after an hour or so playing by myself.  note these are very early impressions.

so you can get a handle on the game, set zed to never run or you will get ganked at night before you know it.  set your server (you start one for and can limit whether it's public or private and whether to pw protect it.  set both of those so you don't get griefers).  set friendly fire off if you have friends.  there are crafting guides if you want a head start, but most of them so far are pretty basic.  if you start in a bad part of the map, you can always exit and start a new one as your initial spawn is random.

structures are very weak and can be broken down by zed pretty quickly.  at least the ones I've seen so far.  wooden doors don't help much at all and will fail after a few minutes or against a group.  but you can slow them down.  pick up a sofa couch and block the door way.  it will help with keeping more from joining in.  once you have a weapon, even a sharpened stick, you can take out groups of them without too much trouble.  if you played an elder scrolls game, you can beat these guys.  hit em and back up.

check your map and set out for nearest town.  it means more zeds, but also more resources to find.  plus, you'll be foraging for food before you get any where near growing your own.  same with water, so try to pick a spot near a river/lake.  if you go hungry/thirsty, you won't die, but you'll be easy target as it will keep your health just enough to get around, but you'll die in one hit.  once you have a decent base of operations, pick a house/structure with a ladder as they can't climb them and as long as you stay out of sight, they won't come after you.  craft a sleeping bag or find one if lucky and it will set your spawn point when you use it.  you can abuse this slightly as you only lose the item in your hands, not everything like in MC.  just be sure to have nothing in a hot bar so you can hit it if you are unable to get out.

note that most zeds can only jump up one level, but 'spider zeds' can jump up two.  caution though as they will bust down those blocks if they can't get to you.

aim for the head! (seriously, it helps)

Is it required to run a server or is there a purely single-player mode? Not a deal breaker but just wondering.

Also, what are your system specs and how well is 7DTD running on it?

there's no specific sp or mp mode.  you start the world and join in.  if you want a strictly sp game, pw protect it and make it private.

as for machine, I'm running at 1920x1080, everything maxed, no stuttering.  it's pretty easy on resources at this point, but you can still get a good swarm going.  they won't make dead rising zeds look small of course, but you can get a lot in a hurry.

running an amd phenom 6-core, radeon 7850 2gb and 8gb ram.  I'll try to get some good usage statistics next time I play.

Thanks for the info. My current rig barely meets the minimums for video, but I've got a new rig coming that should be adequate.

If you go to the Steam Store page there are several reviews that are all thumbs down. However, if you load more reviews there are quite a number of positive ones. I wish that Steam would provide a couple of additional filters, "most recent" and "most hours played" for sorting, that might make that system more helpful.

it's still pretty much in alpha, so a lot of the complaints are based on that.  out of the 2114 reviews, it's pretty balanced:  46% for, 54% against.

got another few hours in with co-op.  played with nighttime runners and you do pretty much have to hold up somewhere.  they are too fast

I got this as a surprise from my wife, probably because I wouldn't stop talking about it  icon_lol

I had my concerns about running it with my AMD Radeon HD 6570 video card, but at full screen 1400x900 it looks ok, not great, but ok.

I died several times before I decided to go zombie-less for awhile, then I didn't know what the hell I was doing, so I broke down and watched a couple of videos to get myself started. Now I'll go back and go a couple of days zombie-less so I can get a bit ahead of them and figure out what I'm doing. I know this isn't the purists idea of playing, but I got killed too many times the other way  Roll Eyes

Effective immediately our new single unit Alpha price is $24.99 and our Alpha 2 pack is $39.99! These prices will stay effective until Beta with the exception of possible sales and promotions along the way. We thank all of you who have supported our product so far and will strive to make it the best damn zombie game we can!
