From the makers of Guitar Hero:

Quote
There will be four instrument-based controllers (lead and bass guitars, a drum kit and a microphone), and online support will include the ability to form bands with people in other countries.

I kinda feel completely out of the whole Music Game genre. I recognize that Guitar Hero is a neat game, but it does absolutely nothing for me. I do like the idea that this will have network play though, this is the kind of online game I would probably play.

IN!  It's cool that the songs will all be the original versions as well.  I always assumed a game like this was coming, figuring it was the next evolution of Guitar Hero.  I am curious how the drum controller will be, though.

Perhaps they could sell it as individual sets. One box would have the guitar, another with the bass, etc. That way, one could coordinate with one's buddies or link up online with whomever is looking for one's instrument. I can't see plunking down ~$250-300 for all of those components.

Wow, I really hope they can pull this one off.  Just wait until you hosers hear me caterwauling like Shatner baby.  I would really dig a Lounge Band hero though so I could croon like Frankie.

Oddly enough this is both a good thing and bad thing for Wii owners. Cool in that they will make the Wii version unique to the platform, bad because you have to wait longer for it.

This sounds really damn cool.  Being a drummer myself, I can't wait to see what they do with that peripheral.  I've always thought a Drum Hero would be a blast to play.

I don't have many gaming friends, but the thought of hooking up and jamming with 3 other people online is certainly intriguing.

Is the Wiimote even remotely close to accurate enough to simulate true percussion?

I'd guess that the Wii version would still use seperate peripherals but it might have more hooks in them for the game to utilize.  For example you might be able to sort of simulate on screen how you are actually holding the guitar instead of the arbitrary Star Power tilt of the Guitar Hero games.

I think it is, actually.  Rayman Raving Rabbids has you do a minigame with the dancing rabbids where you basically se the wiimote and nunchuck like drumsticks and strike down everytime a rabbid enters a circle.  It really got me realizing that a drum game would work great (at least one one drum).  I am not sure how it would do if you were working on a drum set and had to hit multiple drums.

Uh....64th notes?  Flam?  Paradiddle?  I'm not so sure this thing can handle *real* drumming I should say. smile

The old Konami series of games had Keyboard, guitar and drum all combined.  Was an absolute blast.  I was kinda bummed to see that this version has no keyboardist role. frown

Itd be cool if the guitar hero guitars were interchangable with this game and guitar hero.

and.... maybe you can specialize in your favorite instrument and just buy the drums or guitars and then play that way.

I think singers might be higher in demand.....decent ones i mean smile

That's what it sounds like they are going for.

Personally, I doubt the GH controller will be compatible, but I would settle for them being cross-platform.  It actually sounds like cross-platform is not possible with the GH controller (heck, they couldn't even get the PS2 GH controller to work on the PS3).

Haha, sounds very true. Maybe for the 360 since they are going all high tech with GH over there.
But either way I don't own a 360 or PS3 so looks like I'm 'out' for now. Neither console hasnt sold me yet.

Oh wait I was just surfing around and 1up's 'claiming', we all know they are full of lies, but hey it grabbed my eyes:

Quote
Let's rest one fear, right off the bat. IGN recently ran a story that claimed Guitar Hero controllers purchased for the PlayStation 2 versions would not work on Rock Band. Jason Booth, one of the many Harmonix developers participating on the official Rock Band message boards, confirmed this is incorrect. "For some reason, IGN posted that Rock Band will not be compatable [sic] with Guitar Hero guitars. I thought I'd drop in and let you know that this is not correct," he said.

Actually, in a way that stinks.  Since the GH controllers aren't cross-platform, that probably means the RB controllers won't, either.

[edit] ah, I looked at the article and saw this:

Quote
Booth did confirm, however, a new guitar peripheral is being produced for Rock band, and it will vary from the already available one in some way. Could the effects pedal output found in the Xbox 360 controller be a hint at where they're going?

So maybe cross-platform is still in the cards.

I am truly shocked.  Good news though but since they are adding functionality it sounds like there will still need to be an additional hardware purchase.

I have to admit, I have serious doubts about this game:

1. A lot of the talent that went into making GH great has left Harmonix, will the replacements be able to capture what made GH great?
2. This has to be fun single player first, and then multiplayer.  It doesn't sound as if single player has been thought through well. (based on the interviews).
3. The part of the interview that says "we'll be able to deliver great graphical enhancements" screams to me that they just don't get what makes GH great.
4. Playing this on EA's servers (ala NCAA football, Madden) gives me doubt about quality and longevity (what with EA's online availability sunset policies)

The people running this seem to think MORE = Better, which may not apply.

I hope I'm wrong, but this sounds like a disaster in the works, most especially if it ships this year.

Here is the first footage of not only the game but video of people playing it (some of the developers at Harmonix). For people who had doubts about this game, you can now only say one thing: BAD ASS.

http://www.gamespot.com/video/938870/6173535/rock-band-gameplay-movie-1

The group playing is two on guitar, one on drums and one singing. The drum set looks incredibly awesome to play. Also, it appears they are playing the Xbox 360 version because it looks like the guitars they are using are the 360 Guitar Hero guitars.

Actually I can say something other than bad ass - that drum looks neat but that better be on easy.  That looks boring as hell for anyone who has actually played a set.  :/

The rest does look pretty cool.  I'll get to see it up close next week - maybe that'll change my mind.

Thanks, that looks like an absolute blast!

I really hope they flesh out the single player mode.  I don't really have any gamer friends (offline, that is), so the whole "party" aspect of it is lost on me.

True, but Welcome to the Jungle isn't exactly taxing on a real kit either.  I'm an extremely novice drummer, and I can play along with that song pretty well.

From what I understand, there should be a single player campaign for each instrument (including bass). I'm not sure if each campaign will be much different than GH2's single player, though.

It looked like there were sections where you chould just play notes freestyle.  It looked like every instrument had that section at the end.  If so, that's pretty neat, because it would eliminate those annoying noodling sections that tend to pop up at the end of songs that are really hard and arhythmic.  It would be even neater if there was an option to turn the end sections on and off.

Otherwise, I'm even more sold than I was before.
