Bill Harris put up a Blog post yesterday talking about some serious marketing...issues when it comes to Sony advertising for their PS3 console. I've watched the movie/ad, and...well... I can't exactly explain it at all.

So...take it away Bill:

Quote
Sony has a current advertising campaign for the PS3 called "This is Life," and it's one of the best examples I've ever seen of a company that is coming apart at the seams.

Here's the setup: there are basically multiple oddball characters living in a hotel. There are two segments that tell a "story" featuring all the characters, and there are also individual segments for each of the main characters.

Production values are absolutely off the charts. That's not why they stand out, though.

This upcoming video segment is NSFW, at least in every company I've ever worked for.

Here's the segment: This is Living--uncut. This little video gem contains the two segments featuring all the characters, and the second one is truly remarkable, if you call seeing a guy slide his hand into his jock and masturbating "remarkable."

This is known as the "Yank the Crank" theory of advertising.

He's watching a soccer match, and while you you don't actually see his unit, you certainly see the pumping action of his arm, the rhythmic squeezing of a nearby soccer ball, and the simulated orgasm when the television announcer shouts "GOAL!"

I'm going to buy a PS3 right now. Nothing stimulates my appetite for a retail product like a guy spooging over a soccer match. Hell, give me two.

But it gets worse:

Quote
One of the individual video segments is for a character named Bruce, who is an aging, mincing diva and wannabe game show host. Seriously. I couldn't possibly make this shit up.

If you want to see his segment, go here.

Really--you need to see it.

And if you can't, the setup is a chubby 50-ish man in bed. Wearing a thong. His alarm rings, and after a bit of business, he goes in front of a full-length mirror and delivers this monologue:

"Picture the scene, if you will. 7:59 p.m., Friday night, backstage. My makeup is immaculate. My hair quaffed to perfection. I go through my breathing exercises--in through the mind, out through the soul. I stand in the wings, assume the position, and the voice of God himself utters those immortal words: 'Ladies and gentlemen, it's You Bet Your (L)Wife, and here is your host, Mr. Bruce Leghorn.' The lights come up--BOOM!--I am struck by a lightning bolt of adoration. It blows off every single last piece of my clothing--the gold llame jacket, the pants tailored by the delicate young fingers of a thousand Thai boys. Even the tiny silver locket, containing the sepia-tinted picture of my mother as a teenager--gone--incinerated in a flash. And I stand before them, naked, immaculate, gleaming, proud, all my talent on show for the whole world to admire. That, my friend, is living."

That's right: "the delicate young fingers of a thousand Thai boys." And if you didn't watch the video, you missed Bruce's facial expressions, which leave absolutely zero doubt that Bruce is quite taken by Thai boys.

It's a landmark moment in advertising: creating a pederast character to sell high-end consumer electronics devices.

Uh... Um...

Can somebody PLEASE tell me how and why this sells PS3s? And how this shit is even shown on the internet? And worse yet - there's CLEARLY characters in the commercial that resemble the guy from GTA as well as Laura Croft. After watching...that... I'd be PISSED that my characters are being used in that way (you'd have to watch the video to get my drift).

Thoughts? And before you ask - yes, there's a bit more over at Bill's site about this.

It truly is puzzling. I watched the full video and the whole time I am wondering when the tie in with video games will come in. It never really does. Unless people who masturbate to soccer games might want to play a video game of soccer instead. I just don't get what Sony is thinking. Unless of course this is all they wanted, to create buzz. As a fence sitter on getting a PS3, it's not helping my decision to get one though.

As far as a quality video goes, I loved the first one as a setup to some truly David Lynch/Twilight Zone style film noir. Then apparently it was an ad for the PS3. I agree the second one is where the bizarre crosses the boundry between strange and disturbing, and I also agree that whoever agreed that these shorts captured the essence of the PS3's appeal needs to be drug out into the street and shot. This isn't a division in freefall so much as it is the inmates running the aslyum. Which, now that I type it out, actually is the same thing. It doesn't help that Microsoft should be pwning Sony every day now but their manufacturing quality is so highly suspect that it's tough to believe in them as well. But at least they have dazzling commercials that make no sense, but are better to look at (ex. the bouncing balls in San Francisco). The result of all of this?

All hail the Wii. nod

Too bad the Wii is made by Nintendo, those who don't make games I'm very interested in.   Tongue

Loved the Supernintendo I had way back when, but, nothing has grabbed me since I'm afraid.  I'd love to be able to get a Wii, but I know it would end up the same way my Gamecube did.  Of course if they start releasing games I want to play... I'll have a Wii the next time I see one at a store.

At this point, I'm starting to think Sony has fired anyone with a brain in their head during the past few years, and are now riding the remnants of a good reputation on a downward spiral.  You know, kind of like IBM.

Apparently this is targeted at Europe.  Perhaps someone over there can tell us if this is expected advertising across the pond or if the God of War II party crowd has struck again.

Probably the God of War 2 crowd.  I think they're just angry that they get all the releases late.

i still think the original xbox commercial was the best...the cradle to grave one...but apparently it got pulled because of someone saying that they stole the idea of them

this full version of the PS3 one i saw on Kotaku, but the shorter one was played before spider-man 3 when i saw it at the cinema....in fact it had a lot of PS3 stuff before the movie started(with the film being sony pictures an all).

i think the sony one really has left me saying...'huh?'...i didnt even see a ps3 in the commercial.....and if thats living, are they taking a pop at people who dont live like that, and play on consoles?

with that guy masterbating and all that money being lost at the end...it it a secret message and are they saying that all PS3 owners are jerks who have too much money and thats why the PS3 is priced so high?<<<i kid

There's no option in the pulldown to say you are visiting from the U.S., so I guess it is made by Europe for Europe?  I'm American and don't get it, so I guess they got that part right.

The side boobage is a clear sign that it's for the euro market.  Here in America, we're okay with people being shot and blown to bits in our commercials, but a little bit of breasts and sex and we can't show it. slywink

I've actually started to see more nudity on TV.  TCM showed the uncut version of American Beauty.  It was shown late at night (11pm or so).  It wasn't network TV, but it was on basic cable.

Proof that Kutaragi has a secret yakuza army at work in the depths of Sony. They're secretly arranging the funding for projects like this so there's legitmate ammo for those that preach hate towards video games and the companies that create them.
Where...and how...will Krazy Ken and his secret army strike next....<shivers>
He'll have his revenge yet.

and The Shield on FX has warnings of nudity aired before the show starts.
