complete with new gameplay modes:

Dungeon Defenders II is the sequel to our popular tower-defense role-playing game, Dungeon Defenders. Unlike itís predecessor, Dungeon Defenders II features a cooperative and competitive mode. Heroes, cosmetic items, pets, and more will transfer across both modes.

The cooperative mode is the true sequel to Dungeon Defenders. Expect more heroes, more towers and even more loot. New features like an expanded story and a 24-player overworld are also in the works.

The competitive mode is a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena set in the Dungeon Defenders universe. Together, 5 players will take up arms to defend their towers against the opposing team. This fast-paced, streamlined MOBA aims for a shorter learning curve and more rpg-esque take on the genre.

they say the competitive mode is going to be playable at PAX East.  it's also going to be free to play.

The 24 player overworld idea intrigues me....

I enjoyed the first a lot but my group of friends never got past the 2nd level of the DLC.  Just got too grindy to move on.  I hope they do something about that with this one but I somehow doubt it if they are moving twords a dota style mode for it.

Sounds like the MOBA style is only for the competitive mode, and that the co-op tower defense stays the same.

On one hand, MOBA style champions means them cleaning up and making the direct combat portion more interesting for all aspects. Having played a lot of DD with L9 here, the core combat is pretty simplistic and is basically a numbers game of damage output rates, and a little positioning. They tried having combat focused heroes in the DLC, but it wasn't that interesting.

The tower defense portion was fine, although as L9 says, was pretty grindy. After the basic campaign, most of the time the challenge was grinding enough to deal with the later levels rather than skillful placement and planning.

MOBA no more!

Originally it was being developed as a MOBA-style PVP game, but we reviewed the project and decided to turn the ship, refocusing our efforts on a true sequel. Iím happy to announce today that Dungeon Defenders II is in development!

It's for the best. The MOBA genre is just flooded, and will only get more flooded. DD got where it was from its excellent active tower defense mechanics and it should focus on that.
