from BiowarEA comes a free to play entry into the Ultima series:

Quote
The first great Western RPG has been lovingly restored in Ultima Forever - return to the Ultima series in BioWare's new cross-platform action RPG. Accept the challenge from Lady British and save the land of Britannia. Play as the Fighter or the Mage and travel alone or with friends, restore virtue and become the Avatar!

Lady British?  Action RPG?  where's a face palm smiley when you need one?

and no, it's not a MMO.

Quote
And what about the gameplay? Is Ultima Forever an MMO?

No, though Barnett says it has "a lot" of players in it. "It's very tribal in the way we're building it," he explained. The game is a small-group affair, with "tactical, positional" combat that is less about hotbar abilities and more about where your characters stand, what kind of equipment they have, and how you use your abilities together.

Barnett compared the game to the hunting areas in older BioWare titles like Baldur's Gate, and he pointed out that the essence of Ultima Forever is focused on improving your virtues through a BioWare storyline and plenty of dungeoneering. "It's very much a classic RPG adventure. It's more in Dragon Age's territory than that of an MMO," he explained.

some more info from IGN:

Quote
Ultima Forever is a throwback to classic Ultima games, with mechanics grounded in Ultima IV. Starting as either a fighter or a mage (a druid and paladin class are coming later), your hero sets out on a quest to become the Avatar, a person who embodies what are known as the eight Virtues. Using a Baldur's Gate-like isometric perspective, you'll guide your hero either alone or with friends through hours and hours of quests, battling it out with monsters and making hard choices until your character embodies the virtues and reaches the end-game dungeons. Once you beat it, becoming the Avatar, you then start a new game plus, playing through all the content again on an even harder setting.

I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of Ultima fans suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.

a bit more on the game.  they're saying it will be on the iPad first, with other platforms to follow.  it also sounds like it is actually Ultima 4.5:

Quote
Though we'll be playing in the same areas, Flack said, it's still not the same game. "Our version of it is set 21 years after the events of Ultima 4," she clarified. "Ultima 5, 6, 7, 8 haven't happened yet. Lord British is among the stars; he's no longer there. Lady British has now taken the throne and we've found that one Avatar isn't going to do it this time round, we need multiple Avatars and multiple people coming to try and repair the land."

This sounds terrible and is only serving to increase my contempt for BiowarEA.

It can't be any worse than the horrible XBLA 'Wing Commander' game, right? Right?

The real kicker for me is the whole "we've found that one Avatar isn't going to do it this time round, we need multiple Avatars and multiple people coming to try and repair the land" nonsense.  Let's just crap all over the Ultima canon, shall we?  Yeah, there's UO, but everyone is not the Avatar.

As someone with no nostalgic ties to the Ultima series (I simply never got around to playing them), I think this actually sounds kinds cool.

Downloaded this yesterday. It's not bad. Engine is a bit glitchy with crashes, lag, and some frame skipping on my ipad 3. It's an action rpg and the touch controls aren't bad. It does have some of the Ultima feel. OK so far. Better than Ultima 8!  icon_razz

Sold off my jailbroken iPhone so no way to play it.   smile   Honestly I'm a sucker for Ultima, so if it does come to PC I'll play it.

Sounds like android is the next platform later in the year. They will revisit the PC after that.

I still liked that game, and the Star Trek one that was similar, and the Battlestar Galactica one that was the same.

Star Trek one was the best of the three though imo
