Lester: Hey Sarge, why we always gotta listen to this shit for anyway?
Sergent: Cause I'm in charge here, that's why!
Lester: Aw, that don't seem like no kinda good reason to me...
*CRUNCH*
Lester: Looks like you mashed some poor feller's dog, Sarge.
Sergent: That ain't no dog. It's a Zergling, Lester. Smaller attack Zerg. They shouldn't be out this far unless...oh shit.
*HISS*
Lester: I love you, Sarge.
Sergent: Whaaa?
Zerg Hydralisks: OM NOM NOM NOM!!!

We have a beta key to give away, courtesy of loyal reader namatoki, and I'm looking for a true fan of StarCraft to receive it.  Here are the rules for this contest:

1.) You must have been a member of Gaming Trend for over 365 days.   This key fetches nearly $300 dollars on eBay, so I'm not looking to give it to some new guy who registered just for this purpose - this is for our veteran and loyal readership.

2.) You must provide me with some level of proof that you are a fan of the original StarCraft.  A scan of the manual cover, the CD cover, a screenshot of your Battle.net account showing that you own the original, something!  With that something, please include some hand written note or indicator that this is yours and not something you copied from the Internet.  A little piece of paper with your forum name would do the job, as an example.

3.) You must not resell the key.  namatoki was kind enough to provide it on the condition that it go to a somebody who will actually use it.  Please don't abuse that privilege.

That's it!  Send all entries to [email protected] and include your forum name and whatever you've chosen for #2.  Please indicate that this is for the SC2 Beta Key in your subject.  The winner will be chosen the evening of Monday, March 15th.   Good luck Cerebrates!

As much as I would love in on beta, I'm not going to enter, because with all the gaming awesomeness that's been coming out this month (and it's not even done yet!) I would barely play SC2 before April sometime. I'd rather the key go to someone who will make good use of it. biggrin

That said, wow, big props on this contest!

I'm totally a huge fan of $300, er, of the original game, and I totally wasn't in the Total Annihilation side of the TA vs $300 debates of '97.

I just want to say very cool of you Ron, I remember when you had the Burning Crusade beta invites I managed to snag one, meant a lot to me. In fact I managed to get into the orignal beta of WoW because some kind soul gave away a key on the trading forums how crazy is that?! People are way to nice here, guess thats why I enjoy being a member. Anyways good luck to all who enter!

Email sent. For the record: the piece of paper in the picture is the letter Blizzard sent me with a replacement CD-Key on it after mine was stolen at a lan party. They took care of it in under a week, which I thought was pretty awesome customer service.

The rest of it is just me waving a sign that says I love me some Starcraft.

Best of luck to everyone that tries for it! I know I'm not the only one reading impressions and watching gameplay videos and getting way too excited about something that doesn't come out for months at the earliest.

You know, this reminds me that another site I frequent was giving away a beta key, but they had a contest for it where you had to pick out musical samples from a bunch of old games. As it turned out I'd only played one of those old games. They announced the chance at a beta key and I was like "YES!" and then they announced the contest and played the music samples and it crushed any and all hope.

This contest is entirely more my speed. Been a member of the community a while? Fan of starcraft? Yes to both and you're in the drawing.

Ah, bless you Ron. I never win anything and I won't win this, but it's nice to have an actual chance at it.

I'd like to announce the winner of our StarCraft II beta keys.  They say a picture is worth 1000 words.

Thanks to everyone who participated.  I'll be trying to obtain other keys, so this isn't your last chance!
(winner was chosen by "pick a number between x and y" method by one of my co-workers)

So now you've won something. I hope it was worth it to now have to say "I never win anything, except that Starcraft II Beta key from Gamingtrend.com".

We can't buy that kind of advertising - hell, I don't even think we can sell it. (certainly not for $300) Tongue

Congrats, Thin J!  I'm happy to give something to the community that has been my gaming buddies since the time of Gone Gold.  Enjoy your beta key and kick some ass for me. smile

And thank you, KD, for holding the contest for me.  Glad to get the key into a nice home.

Bummer Soulchilde. Feel your pain. Hope Blizzard does more waves of invites the other way and you get in.

It's downloading! And now I'll be disappearing, lest I use even a tiny shred of bandwidth that might otherwise be dedicated to moving the digital bits of starcraft 2 to my hard drive.

You know, this is probably a mistake. The only other game that ever rivaled Starcraft for hours spent was Counterstrike, but that eventually wore out its welcome after five or six years. I still play the original Starcraft. I installed it on my beefy new Win7 PC I built last fall before I installed any games that actually made use of my fancy videocard or monitor resolutions other than 640x480.

I'm slightly afraid of sinking into a game the way I did the original, but I guess we'll see how that goes in a few hours. If a couple weeks go by and I don't post, someone call the authorities. It will mean I never turned the game off or left my computer chair.

It won't be a mistake - you'll find SC2 to be very much SC1 with some new tricks and much better graphics.  smile

It's really pixelated.  Otherwise it's pretty much the same.  If you've played new RTS games though, you'll miss some features that are common-place.

Leo's right. If it's been a long time since you last played then your first game or twoback will probably feel really weird because of the outdated interface. And the graphics setup's limit to 640x480 definitely makes for a pixely kind of blurred looking experience on a modern high res LCD.

Game's still great though. After a couple of minutes I tend to forget all the limitations are even there.

Thanks for the great give away! I'll be passing though because I don't care for multiplayer Starcraft 2.  I only like MP with my friends doing co-op vs the computer. MP Starcraft with strangers has never done anything but suck for me. Its all rush rush rush boring. Im only really interested in SC2 for the single player story line.

Besides I just picked up C&C 4 yesterday ..better series smile Going to miss Kane frown Joe  has played him since 1995. Wow.

You can play co-op vs. the computer in the beta.  Not that I'm trying to twist your arm or anything...

This is true, but it does limit you to the very easy AI and it's borderline impossible to lose to. My very first game was against it, and after flubbing around trying to figure out what I needed to do first, I ended up moving out of my base with a group of 20 zerglings and 6 hydralisks. When I got to the AI's base it had a tiny group of marines and.... nothing else. Sooooooo silly.

Good luck to everyone that enters!

The first winner....Sam Edge!  He is absolutely right - GT does, in fact, rock.  Key will be heading your direction shortly...

Can we start a username list here for ingame? Provided I can resolve the issues I'm having with the beta (check it out, if anyone has any ideas post in there) some multi would be fun.
