Sitting on my couch in front of my 73" TV with my PS4 controller....FTW!

Sitting in my office chair in front of my 24" monitor... not too bad. Actually it's a really nice office chair, mesh material for coolness and lumbar support. Sadly the wheels have deteriorated to the point that I had to take them off, so the five legs sit on wood blocks, but then I don't tend to move too much.

Has everyone checked out this latest "Watch Dogs 101" trailer? Nicely lays out a lot of the features. Since I'm going to be off on vacation at release I'm going to pass up pre-ordering and instead follow this thread for impressions.

Playing undisturbed on my 24" monitor, headphones on and volume up, while the kids and the wife take an afternoon nap on the weekends....priceless.

I'm sticking with PS4 for now.  Big screen TV/ease of play/PS4 controller > 22IN LCD/PC is in a wonky state/360 controller.  I'll consider double dipping on PC in a year or so for the rest of the DLC.

I went with PS4. Once again the XB1 lower resolution swung it over to the PS4. While I'm not that hung up on minor resolution differences, all things being equal I'm going to choose the higher one. From the video comparisons I've seen I think the XB1 looks slightly better (the PS4 looks more washed out to me, they never do good blacks). It's not enough of a difference to swing me over though.

I'm not sure what you've been watching, but there's absolutely no difference between the black levels on XBox One and PS4. However, the Xbox One has had issues with full dynamic range when using capture cards, which leads to color compression (NEVER a good thing, because you lose exactly 12.5% of all the colors in the picture that way, turning them all into black or white).

In short, if you're seeing color differences between the two versions, it's because of one of the following two reasons:

1) The recorder has configured his consoles incorrectly for his TV.
2) He's suffering from the Xbox One dynamic range bug on his capture card.

Every time I see side by side comparisons of PS4 vs XB1, XB1 looks darker. I know that this is because of crushed blacks or whatever blah blah blah. I don't really care. I like my blacks black, not grey. Even in the PS3 generation the PS3 always looked slightly washed out.

If it's a problem with recording equipment, then EVERY Watch Dogs graphics comparison I've seen so far is having the same "recording problems."

It's fine to prefer it but to imply that the PS4 is having problems with blacks is fundamentally reversed of the issue.  I mean people like Vivid mode on their TV too, but that's not representative of the actual image being sent over the wire.  This Thief comparison I thought highlighted things best

The blacks on the PS4 are perfect black. What you're talking about are colors that aren't supposed to be perfect black, but which are turned into it. The recording equipment (not your TV, which will show the same "washed out" colors regardless of which console you use. This is a valid topic ONLY for recording equipment or incorrectly configured TV-console communications, and I suspect neither is appropriate for your situation. Those comparisons you're talking about? They have nothing to do with you or your experience) asks the Xbox One what the color of a particular pixel is. Let's say the color is dark gray (16, 16, 16. For comparison, black is 0,0,0 and white is 255,255,255). The Xbox One takes a look at that gray color and tells the recording equipment that it's 0,0,0. Then the recorder asks the Xbox One what the color of the neighboring pixel is. The Xbox One sees 10,10,10 and tells the recorder that it's 0,0,0. Do you see the problem with this situation? The Xbox One has indiscriminately killed off every color that would have been lower than 16 in value. It does the same thing with whites too, pressing them upwards and turning all light grey colors into pure white. As a result, you've suddenly lost every value between 1 and 16, and between 240 and 254.

But then again, you haven't really. Only the people doing the comparisons with their fancy recording equipment are. Your TV will show the same results regardless of the console you choose. Of course, if you absolutely can't live without crushing your colors, you can set the PS4 to full dynamic range too. It'll have the same effect. There's a reason that option is turned off by default.

Quote

It's not a problem with recording equipment. It's a problem with the Xbox One, which tells equipment that it's using one particular dynamic range, then uses another. It's a bug that Microsoft hasn't shown any intention of fixing, because they know it will fool people who look at screenshots and think that extreme contrasts look good. I had a similar experience when I accidentally set my PS3 to full dynamic range two years ago. My first thought was "ooh, this looks good", but it only took a few minutes of movies and games to realize that I couldn't see shit. I could barely see the faces of speaking roles in movies, and games had me stumbling around in the dark because I couldn't see where I was going. This shit might look good in a screenshot, but it's completely unusable in a moving picture.

The combination of a million different pre-order bonuses and a review embargo that ends after the game's release, worries me a lot. It's like Ubisoft doesn't have faith in the game.

Wrong or right, that's what I take away from it too.  In contrast, look at a game like Mario Kart 8 where Nintendo seems to be counting on pre-release reviews to help sell the game.

I wasn't trying to start a console war discussion. I was just stating why I went with PS4 over XB1. Some people are just overly sensitive of even the slightest criticism, even if that criticism is just a personal preference.

At any rate, I'm confident that after owning and playing both consoles regularly, I'm probably in a better position to make statements about both than someone who doesn't.
