I think this is rapidly becoming one of my most aniticipated games. I'm really surprised by how good the 3D graphics are.

Looks great!  I'm very bummed though that while Japan gets this at the end of June, we have to wait until the holidays for release.

Is this supposed to be related to Wind Waker? There seem to be a bunch of similarities (both in the setting and stylistically).

It's my understanding it's a direct sequel to Wind Waker.

Those 3D graphics look like shit, and that map is far too spartan and lifeless. I suppose if you view everything in a vacuum and take into consideration the lack of power under the hood the developer's did the best they could. But the PSP shows that the DS just isn't a system for 3D graphics.

I would have preferred to see more detailed sprites and painted backgrounds instead of blocky, bland, 3D textures. And a better color pallette wouldn't kill anyone. The DS is a great system, but none of its 3D offerings have been even remotely impressive.

Well, this is certainly a... 'half-empty' way to look at things.  icon_wink Did you not like Wind Waker? I think it looks great.

They did a good job of capturing the broad strokes of the Wind Waker look. Perhaps everything looks better in actual gameplay. Still screens can often do a game an injustice. But I still think developers should avoid 3D on the DS. It reminds me of how bad many original PS games like Xenogears looked in comparison to their sprite based RPG counterparts.

It's obviously not going to be as pretty as what the PSP can produce, but it does look pretty good for DS 3d.  I agree with Dante about wishing they had just made a great looking 2d game instead of trying to squeeze some decent 3d out of the DS.

I'm sure it'll look even better on an actual DS.  FFIII looked a lot better in person than the screenshots made it out to be.

Yes, things look a little rougher around the edges -- not surprising considering that this is still an unfinished build -- but it's a rather impressive recreation of the art style found in Wind Waker.  I never thought the screen shots for that game looked any good either, but seeing it in motion was a completely different story.

If the animation is up to the task, this could be a great looking game!

I simply can't see how someone can look at the same shots I just looked at and rip on them. icon_eek I think they look great. Would higher-res textures, a deeper polycount, and a higher resolution setting look better? Sure! Why wouldn't it? But I don't see how those shots look bad.

Agreed.  I'm beyond impressed and excited by these.  It's like being mad that it's not as good as what's on the 360.

Well, I can see where someone that plays PSP games regularly might feel they look primitive.
But it doesn't matter, because gameplay is king here.

I believe the maps are intentionally sparse to allow the player to draw/write his own notes directly on the map.

These two shots looked exceptionally drab to me:

But then I realized they were just from that special capture the flag minigame.  So I'm back on the impressed wagon. smile

I am both excited and terrified of this game. I am excited for a new Zelda game, but I am terrified that the all stylus controls with suck hard.

Those screen shots look very good indeed, by far the best images I've seen on the DS yet. I'd preorder it today, but EB is the only store that takes preorders in my city and they failed to honor my LOZ:TP preorder. Hope there's lots of copies around when it releases.  paranoid

Holy crap that's impressive stuff from the DS. It'd even be decent on the PSP (obviously running at the PSP's higher resolution). The game will be gorgeous at least; hopefully it plays great too. icon_wink

Apparently, Famitsu gave it a near perfect score (39/40).  It comes out this weekend in Japan.

Came out yesterday in Japan.  Would this game be fairly text heavy?  My japanese is quite crap but I might like to pick it up.

The Zeldas aren't exactly story-heavy, but you might miss a puzzle clue if you can't read the text.  I would imagine a walkthrough or at least message board help would be available at GameFAQs before too long.

Gamespot impressions here. I am still dubious about the controls, but this article gives me hope.

Quote
We're most excited about the new control scheme, though, which we admittedly went in expecting to dislike. Quite the contrary, we already can't imagine playing the game in the traditional fashion, and can't wait to go through the whole adventure in English when Zelda: Phantom Hourglass hits shelves in North America in the fourth quarter of this year.

Nah, it looks really good and I'm sure if I had a DS I'm sure I would get this.
