And the guy kept talking about how the developers had come up with these great new ideas!  I mean, it was remarkably similar.  Even the castle on the hill looked the same.  Ridiculous!

None the less, I am looking forward to this game.  You can never have enough good WWII shooters, IMO.

Meh...ww2 shooters can only go so far. I'm getting kind of sick of them personally, but I did really like what BIA did with the true stories and all.

I often wonder if WWII is used as much as it is because it seems that the Nazis are a universally agreed upon evil.  However looking at the Revolutionary war, perhaps it is more difficult to sell the idea due to the less defined good vs. evil nature of the war.

I think it's more a case of how difficult it would be to do without it being insanely boring... stand in a line... wait for it... shoot... miss... reload for 30 seconds... repeat.

As for this game... the name, the look, everything about it is just a complete rehash of COD or MOH.  Put me in the 'did they really need to remake this exact same game for the 1000th time?' camp.

Well, I was immediately wary of the game because it is published by Midway...

One of the worst FPS I've played.  The FOV is pretty bad for Halo 3, but holy shit, it's tunnel-vision in this one.  Moves sluggish.  Enemies move weird.  Everybody looks strange.  An absolutely soul-less, uninspired game.

I was looking forward to this, on the other hand (not sure what the problem is with Midway...I enjoyed the Area 51 demo a lot, and I'm having fun with Mortal Kombat for the Wii, not to mention Unreal Tournament, The Suffering and lots of others).  However, I have to agree it's not very good.

When you start, you choose from three classes.  In the descriptiona, they're all very different.  I chose the Ranger, because I thought it would be cool to use the grappling hook and move around on the rooftops.  I never found a way to grapple.  Never made it onto a roof.*  The sniper site moved insanely slowly (though changing the sensitivity helped).  Didn't have a problem with FOV, though.

A few other "Huh?" moments: There a random comment to stand still for healing when the screen turns red.  They're being very literal.  You cannot crouch and heal.  I got stuck on nothing one time as a grenade was thrown my way, died, then was taken to the character select screen again.  I went back to a checkpoint that was further back than what I'm sure was the checkpoint.  I thought I'd play as the Commando from that checkpoint, but found I still had the sniper rifle.  I can shoot someone in the elbow with the sniper rifle, and it's like a headshot.  And right before you get to what I thought was the checkpoint, this British bloke starts annoying you by saying, "This way, hurry" every three seconds until you walk through the doorway to trigger the cut scene.

The graphics ain't so hot, either.  The scenery looks okay, but not great.  The characters are very weak.  And the death animations are almost ridiculous.  Sniper shot to the head?  Naturally, they'd launch in the air a few feet clutching their stomach.  Oh, and there are lots of crates (made me miss Old Man Murray).  None the less, graphics can be improved from their state in a demo, so I always look at that stuff with a grain of salt.

Anyway, like metallicorphan, I love me some WWII shooters, but this one's going to have to be very far improvement from what I've seen here to get me to buy it.

*Edit to add: When I thought I was playing the Commando, I finally found one hotspot that let me climb up.  I was more exposed than I had been on the ground.  And the Ranger's amazing jumping ability which is supposed to let me jump from rooftop to rooftop, let me jump on the ground.

Annnnnd the demo has been pulled?

Probably a good move, because making this demo available for any longer before people can purchase the game would decrease sales by the thousands.

You are right. This is probably true in fact. I suppose the revolutionary or civil war would be an interesting game, as you're killing people who are now either parts of our country or our allies. I think they are going to start doing the war on terror more now. Think Call of Duty modern warfare.

Why is this game so sluggish and why are the death animations so funky?  The Area 51 demo was much more enjoyable than this piece of trash.   Boring demo.

i have often wondered how these type of games(or even the vietnam games)fair in the countries that are in the games considered evil...for example, how does COD games go down in germany...MOH:rising sun in japan...or as said the vietnam games
(i actually first thought something like this when watching indiana jones and the last crusade....wondering if Germans found it great entertainment as i did)

maybe this is why star wars is so universally successful,LOL

how does COD games go down in germany...

I don't think they are allowed to even reference Nazi's in video games in Germany.  I remember ID had to change the Wolfenstein Nazi's to some weird brotherhood in order to publish the game there.

I've been looking into this a little further. It looks like they've put an interesting little spin on the game. There are 3 characters that each have their own abilities. That's a nice twist.

A nice twist poorly implemented.  That was the thing that had me most interested in the game, but it really didn't have much impact on gameplay.  I've read a little more on the game, and there really does seem to be exactly one place where your sniper can climb onto the roof (and it's marked with a rope that could be climbed to reach said roof, but you sit through a grappling hook cut scene anyway).

Still though, it's only the demo. I'm sure the full version of the game will have a number of advantages/disadvantages for each class. This is a Midway game after all.

Yeah, but compare this to the midway demo for the new Area 51.  That was polished and diverse and fun (if short).  And that doesn't come out until September.

This game comes out in a couple of weeks.  I'm usually pretty pollyanna about giving games the benefit of the doubt myself, but this one does not have my hopes up.

I was actually being serious. I've enjoyed Midway's last few games. Also, you can bet that they are putting some work into the game after the demo was released. I'll still give this one a try.

So if you thought the demo was bad, check out Gamespot's review of the full game:

I love their description of the game: "Hour of Victory is practically broken and has no business being on shelves in its current state. "

None of the other reviews are nearly that bad, though.  Of course, none of them are good, either.
