This game reminds me of Colonel Kurtz with all the "mad" dialogue.

The upgraded shotgun and machine gun definitely rip it up. I can stun lock a Big Daddy now.

Speaking of "mad" dialogue:

Spoiler for Hiden:
I had no problem putting him down after all the hoops he made me jump through.

After bringing down the hammer of death on him, I took his picture and got an achievement called "Irony".  icon_lol

Here's a neat, post-mortem-type interview with a couple of the team members on Bioshock.

DO NOT watch if you have not finished, as there is some spoilerish content.

Just finished the game.  Loved it.  My game of the year so far.  No replay for me though because once you know that you know who is not on the up and up, I see no reason to keep playing.  But that does not change the fact that I thought it freaking awesome.

For me, it wasn't so much they were hard (well, Rosies were: bastards had great aim), but at first it was just the amount of resources it took to take down a Big Daddy, in terms of medkits and ammo.

Near the end for me, it seemed like the real balance shift was when resources were cheap and plentiful for me.  I could afford to heal all the time, and in fact took risks because I knew I had money to burn.  Now were there not that cap on the wallet, perhaps I would have been slower and more careful.

I'm sure they'll become more manageable later in the game, but I made the mistake of listening to Atlas and tried taking on the first Big Daddy you come across after your initial exposure to the Little Sisters.  After dying in less time than it takes me to take a leak, I felt pretty foolish, as if I had a "hold my beer, watch this" moment.  I may have won my first Darwin award.

what, the old GOW reflexes didn't kick in for that one?  I died only once during a Big Daddy fight, and that was me accidentally hitting the fire button while strafing back around a corner after switching to the grenade launcher  icon_redface

Woohoo!!  Just finished the game.

I restarted, and had a few thoughts:

Spoiler for Hiden:
1. (I got the "good" ending) Tenenbaum must have left Rapture.  After all, she was narrating what happened to you afterward.

2. Where did your "real" memories start at the beginning of the game?  I'm thinking after you get up from gaining ElectroBolt.  Because when you see the splicers talking about you, they leave to your left... but there's no exit that way.  The Little Sister and Big Daddy also exit stage left, again with nothing being that way.  Since that incident seems a bit surreal, it's a likely candidate for when you "wake up" and actually start moving about in Rapture.

I would have said when you came out of the bathesphere from outside, but part of the plane smashes into a tunnel shortly afterward... which means there would have had to have been a plane, which there probably wasn't.

Unbreakable, don't overthink it (endgame spoiler):
Spoiler for Hiden:
There was a plane, you were on it, you hijacked/blew it up, the present that you had in your hands with the words "would you kindly not open this until...".  Fontaine basically says you crashed the plane somehow, most likely it was a trigger he used, you blank out, take over the plane, fly it over to the rapture bathysphere and crash it.  Then with your gene modifications, were tough enough to survive the crash.

He sent you topside so that Ryan couldn't get a hold of you.

All the memories of your life on the surface is a lie, not the crash itself.  Kinda highlight's Fontaine's evilness even more that he'll sacrifice a plane full of people to deliver his ace in the hole.

One strategy that works for me, at least this early in the game, is to initiate an attack with my shotgun.  Then I hold my distance while dodging his shots until he throws a grenade thing and I telekinesis it right back at him.  Takes about three "return to senders" to finish him off pretty easily.  I've used this on several Big Daddies and it worked every time.

As a side note, this game is really difficult trying to play without using Plasmids.  I've been trying but can't do it.  I'm at least limiting, to the best of my ability, the use of Plasmids.

What i don't understand is why the game makes it so damn easy with no 'death penalty'. At my first big daddy, after using a ton of weaps and kits, i think i just stood in front of the resurrection tube thing and wacked him with the wrench. I probably died 10-15 times.

Of course that's no fun and with the later weapons, i was able to take him down in a few shots.

Because the alternative is playing the save/reload game, and there is no death penalty involved in that either.

Also... this is the exact same mechanice used by System Shock (except didn't it cost energy to revive?).

I watched an interview with some devs and they said they made it like that so you wouldn't be taken out of the narrative when you die, an thus would have less desire to stop playing.  It just loads you right up and you go again.

No grenade tags in Bioshock.

Perhaps I just wasn't ready for their speed, agility, or raw power.  I think after a few bitch slaps I was so stunned at how powerful they were that I sat like a deer in the headlights and watched my character get absolutely pulverized.  Plus, I never once thought to use my armor piercing rounds.

I didn't even last long enough to see if he even had any grenades.  After he received such little resistance he was simply content with bludgeoning me to death with his bare hands.  I didn't even bother reloading because it was time to get back to puppy detail and I was irritated with how sluggish the controls felt while fighting a Big Daddy.  I'll get back to it soon enough.  I just haven't had much time to devote to gaming.  Or sleep, for that matter.

one thing that i noticed last night fighting a bouncer's bigger brother was how effective the upgraded shotty was with the electric buck.  i started with a grenade and electric shock and then just went to town on his metal ass.  i was very surprised as an earlier encounter with this one really wrecked me.  if you can keep your space from the bouncer, you can survive much longer.

pete, i used the environment against the first one.  let's just say i must have really annoyed him by my movements.  biggrin

i've made it to mr ryan's office complex and so far, i've only found 6 upgrade stations.  have i missed some as it seems i have fewer levels to finish than i would need to upgrade the other 4.

oh and one last thing

Spoiler for Hiden:
I didn't kill him at the end of the level, but when I met him later on at his apartment, he had a key on him.

To be blunt... I was extremely underwhelmed by what was in there.  About the only thing I got out of it was curiosity satisfaction.

i've made it to mr ryan's office complex and so far, i've only found 6 upgrade stations.  have i missed some as it seems i have fewer levels to finish than i would need to upgrade the other 4.

Spoiler for Hiden:
Did you find the weapon upgrade station in Arcadia that is revealed AFTER the defoliation? That one is hard to find

Spoiler for Hiden:
no, not that one.  the one with the numeric lock on the bottom.  i got the padlocked one after i killed him.  odd, i didn't think i had a choice whether to kill him or not.  i just opened up and my brainwashed bouncer tanked him while i shot him in the back.

not sure.  i played that level last week.  i never leave a level without exploring every gray area on the map.  i think i may need to check a map for the locations to be sure.  same with the audio clips.  i won't be replaying this as soon as i finish so i won't get burned out.

what, the old GOW reflexes didn't kick in for that one?  I died only once during a Big Daddy fight, and that was me accidentally hitting the fire button while strafing back around a corner after switching to the grenade launcher  icon_redface

Pete

One strategy that works for me, at least this early in the game, is to initiate an attack with my shotgun.  Then I hold my distance while dodging his shots until he throws a grenade thing and I telekinesis it right back at him.  Takes about three "return to senders" to finish him off pretty easily.  I've used this on several Big Daddies and it worked every time.

As a side note, this game is really difficult trying to play without using Plasmids.  I've been trying but can't do it.  I'm at least limiting, to the best of my ability, the use of Plasmids.

Pete-I thought (and still do) that the controls, both on 360 and even on PC with a super sensitive gaming mouse-felt slow, clunky and unresponsive all around-and moreso fighting big daddys. So it might not be just you.

My character just felt terribly sluggish.  Aiming was a challenge, strafing seemed next to impossible, awareness of my surroundings went to crap once the screen was knocked silly, and based on my experience with games like Gears of War, R6, and even Halo, the battle became very frustrating, and it didn't feel like it was a lack of skill, but instead felt more due to problematic controls.  Strafing to the side felt completely impossible, and that pissed me off the most.

Normally I'd reload a game and get right back into the fight, ready to remedy some of the mistakes that led to my demise, but for some reason I preferred shutting the game off and coming back to it at a later date.  And because my patience is shot from an unruly puppy and lack of sleep, I just don't have the ability to tolerate frustrating gaming moments right now.

Don't get me wrong.  I absolutely love Bioshock.  But something just didn't click when I took on my first Big Daddy.  It could be a lack of concentration, not thinking clearly due to sleep deprivation, or perhaps I'm still adjusting to the control scheme.  Now that I think about it, I have electric ammo for the shotgun, armor piercing rounds for the pistol and maybe even for the machine gun, the incinerate plasmid, and I have a full bank of health packs and Eve needles.  I really need to get back to playing.  I really brain farted during my last battle and I think the surprise of just how strong those bastards are really took me out of my game.

they act all slow and sluggish when walking around too so you get this huge fake out, thinking that all you need to do is back up and plink them to death.  then they wake up and bum rush you.  i think it was great to see that actually.  made me afraid to deal with them.

btw, it's not just early on that they can F you up good.  during a fight with a boss, i had a BD as my friend tanking him while i took potshots at the boss.  big mistake as i ended up hitting the BD and after the boss died, he aggroed on me.  as the boss was a human, all of my ammo loadouts were anti personnel.  even though i could hit him with electro shock, i couldn't load up enough armor piercing/anti BD ammunition to take him out fast enough.  i had to use up a ton of medkits and wasted a bunch of AP rounds on him.

you will find tonics which speed up your movement speed soon enough.  not sure how much they realistically help, but these later fights are much easier for me.
