Aside from MP does anyone know of any differences between the Xbox and PS3 version of this game?

The PS3 version was more difficult to program, so they left out being able to destroy world objects, such as buildings.

Wow, that seems like a major difference.  Are you serious?  I read a review just now from IGN and it talked about destruction on multiplayer.

wow, that is a big difference...funny as well, because the first two Red Factions with its destructable stuff was on PS2

I'm pretty sure he was kidding.  the only problem I know of with the PS3 version is that you're supporting the terrorists if you buy it.  seriously, the PS3 sales go straight into Bin Ladens pocket so he can finance his Operation Ressurrect Hitler   Truthiness!

I found my first singularity bombs last night, I almost missed them as they were on the floor and looked like a piece of scenery.  I have to say I was also pretty unimpressed, but that may have been due to me thinking they were thrown and wasting the two that I found by placing them poorly.  I've also decided to skip the transporter missions as I'm not a completist and they're not worth travelling over half the map to complete.

I hope to be online but I'm not sure when.  This afternoon I'm off to Moliere's for our weekly pool match and I'm not sure when I'll be home.  We're getting up early tomorrow to go boating with some friends and we probably won't be home until around dinner time, and then a friend is coming by for dinner and to watch a movie.  If I'm home at a reasonable hour tonight I may try to log on, but I doubt I'll have time to play on Saturday.  Sunday might be possible, but I have a list of projects to work on as well.

I'll try to get in on some MP but I can't make any guarantees.

Sadly, you can't read tone or see facial expressions through the intertubes.  I thought he might be joking, but wanted to be sure.  Haven't decided which platform I might want to pick this up on and if that was a true statement, it basically killed any chance I would get it on the PS3.

But leaving out the ability to destroy buildings in this game would be like leaving out the ability to pick things up when you roll over them in a Katamari game.  And the King would be hella pissed if that happened.

Well since all the Red Faction games involved destructible terrain/buildings, that would be my first clue it was a joke.  The only out a person would have is if they've never played any of the games in that series smile

I am not sure they own the rights to Freespace, those may still be with Interplay.  still, the could develop another space combat game that would be the 'spiritual' successor to Freespace.  I'd love to see them do another Puinisher game, the one they did in 2005 was pretty fun.

I beat the game, and my biggest disappointment is not having more missions to do. I just unlocked all the cool guns, and I can't play with them?

Well, I still have all the guerrilla missions to finish (and there are a LOT) so I guess I'm not really done. But, for the first time ever, I say BRING ON THE DLC!

The shine is starting to wear off for me.  I'm in Dust, and I'm finding myself getting hamstrung by the difficulty, and having to repeat every mission multiple times.  I just did the mission involving the miners' rally, and it took me four tries.  The third try resulted in failure because

Spoiler for Hiden:
the GPS arrows for the last part where you have to kill the commander pointed me to his origin point, but once there, he was long gone, and since I'd just been directed there, I spent too long looking for him.

After I finished that, I decided to try the gunner guerrilla action, figuring that should be an easy diversion.  Five tries later, and I still haven't finished it, though one try saw me come up short by .03, which was maddening.  I just don't know how much differently I can do that mission.  Maybe if I could shoot down the flyers, but that's really hard with the guns they give you.

So yeah, I'm kind of thinking that if the difficulty keeps up like this (and if I can't turn it down to easy without restarting) that I may be done with it.  It's just not fun to spend the majority of my time retrying missions.

I found using the machine gun fire from the vehicles gun a great way to take those things down.

Playing on normal.  Apparently I was just off my game earlier, as I went back and have gotten through almost all the Dust missions with only two retries at most.  Now I'm just working on taking down enough targets and side missions to knock the control meter down enough to unlock the final Dust mission.

I'm looking forward to getting some greater variety in weapons so that I can be a bit more tactical.  Since none of my current weapons (including the rocket launcher) are really effective at range, I've found that so far, my best plan of attack is to go in with a heavy vehicle and just bulldoze everything.  I'd like to be able to take things down with a bit more finesse than that.

Unless they'd let me ride around in the heavy walker all the time.  Then I'd say to hell with finesse.

If you are having more difficulty than normal (and it is pretty normal to die a lot in this game) you should be able to change the difficulty at any time.

Just finished off the Badlands, and still really liking it.  I'm spending a lot of time on the demo master missions, and I think I've beaten the pro time on all of them so far.  I'd love to have a whole game just with demo challenges.  Though I just ran into one in Oasis where you have to take out a building using the hammer and eight fuel tanks set up like a driving range.  Turns out you have to

Spoiler for Hiden:
whack them overhand with the hammer, which somehow makes them fly up and forward.  Aside from the fact that they based a puzzle around a physics bug, I didn't like that either the aiming of the barrels was based on where you were standing, or was so non-obvious that I didn't figure it out in any of my 30 or so tries.  Eventually I just got lucky with the first two barrels.

I've also found a few stashes of singularity bombs, and I agree I'm unimpressed with them.  I tried to get clever and set them at the base of the supports of the big bridge in Badlands, but they didn't even nick the supports.  The range on them is just too small to be really effective, and they don't seem to hit vehicles.

The final mission of Badlands had some strangeness:

Spoiler for Hiden:
Just before taking this mission, I'd snuck in the back door to the airfield and taken out the control tower.  Then when I found out the mission wanted me to go back there through the front door, I said hell no, and went for the back.  Just before I got there, I heard someone (possibly my character) say "Oops".  Next thing I know, I had two flyers shooting at me.  Fortunately, I had my upgraded nano rifle, and took them down with one or two shots each.  The other three gunships followed and got knocked down just as fast.  Mission was pretty damn easy, but I just wonder what prompted them to take off rather than give me a chance to use the bombs they'd given me.

I've also seen some wonky things with buildings not falling when really they should.  Things like whole buildings being held up by one corner or one doorway or something.  Must be that crazy Martian engineering, but it's pretty annoying when I'm at range with the rifle trying to figure out what's holding it up.

re: Buildings

Give it time - you have to remember the gravity isnt what you are used to, so things might take a little longer to fall down :-)

still, it's annoying when a building is apparently being held up by nothing other than a ladder that led to it's roof while the entire upper section is intact  icon_evil

true, but through my 20 hours of addicted play through, i noticed this happening only a handful of times.  i loved watching the alternative happen though, when a building that was visually standing up collapsed after a short delay and watching pieces from above wreck lower structures.  this happened during the sniper hunter mission.

i only ever saw the worst case of broken destruction once, when a walkway i trashed hung over the ground without a support structure at all.  too bad i couldn't jump to it, but i did get it crash eventually.

Quick strike and withdraw?

Hell no.

Get as much anger built up with the EDF as you can, get them to send a tank after you...  Use the arc Welder on the tank to kill everyone inside the tank without damaing the tank.  Get in the tank.  Commence utter destruction of high importance targets smile Muahahaha.

I sincerely hope nobody skips the mines either:)  The effect some mines on the road vs an EDF convoy...o_O  Fun fun fun!

IF you have maxed mines and maxed mining charges...how many mines in a chain can you explode? smile !!  Some big structures you can demolition in some fantastic ways like that:)

Each remote charge can trigger a different chain of mines allowing you to sequentially detonate different chains in different parts of a structure...o_O  Be sure to place some explosive containers around in the critical corners or by critical beams to get the max explosive power in the critical points.  Include a MOAB where appropriate.  Mines under the vehicle detonate them nicely with good vertical oomph.

Too bad none of this is possible on the PS3 version.  ninja

The PS3 version also has it's sarcasm detector disabled.

Okay as a lot of us hadn't played the PS3 version online, how was we to know?
As we can't read 'tone' in someones sentence, how was we to know?
As the person didn't actually put (!) at the end of the sentence meaning he was being sarcastic how the F*CK was we to know????  Roll Eyes

Sarcasm is really hard to do online since no one can hear the inflections that you're voicing to the internet, unless of course you make it really really obvious, or attach smilies.

I've never played the PS3 version either.  Bug given that the building destruction is the central point of the game, you'd better believe that if it was missing from the PS3 version, there would have been tons of complaining both here and elsewhere on the nets.  The sarcasm was pretty obvious to me, and a quick visit to any PS3 site's review of the game would probably turn up a mention of building destruction in the opening paragraph.

well we were talking about Multiplayer at the time,so the comment saying that it didnt have destructable environments didn't seem that much of a 'out of the ballpark' comment to me...oh,well,i know now icon_cool
