Beyond the astronomical locations, you'll also discover derelict starships, secret bases on alien moons, lost satellites... the possibilities are amazing. And ultimately your exploration is in the context of an intense mission where everything you discover is another resource or clue to help you uncover a dark plot that threatens all life in the galaxy.

Quote
Of course, since this is the most non-linear game we've ever made, it's really hard to gauge just how long the game will last with a single number. But, at a guess, for players that want to get straight through the story, it should take more than 20 hours - for those who like to explore a little more through the game, across the larger galaxy, it could actually be double that.

Quote
Even though this is the first in a trilogy, our approach hasn't been to hold back, but to create the best possible first game as a standalone story, but with the awareness of trilogy issues to inform certain decisions. In other words, we're doing all the things we'd normally do to make this debut as amazing as possible, but because we're aware of an ongoing story arc we can make sure that long-term ideas are supported by the story of the first game. So even though this doesn't hold anything back in its story, well, we've built in hooks that allow us to do some crazy things in the next games.

it also talks about creating your character, how the core of the story can be unfolded in more ways thn one and more

This is real next gen gaming to me.  Not graphics, not extra effects processing put into gore effects.  It's using all that extra power and memory for character and story interaction.  Weaving the gameplay into the story in ways that wasn't possible with the previous generation's tech, knowhow, and system constraints.

It's not that big a jump forward.  I mean, the conversation isn't completely dynamic, but it's a good step towards much more dynamic conversation engines in the future.

I'm betting the WTF ending will be reserved for the second one.  If the first one does well the next 2 should be pretty much guaranteed, but I think a people friendly company like Bioware wouldn't leave the first ending in a cliffhanger just in case the first one tanks.

I'm guessing we'll be lucky to see the second game by the end of this generation with the "final" installment not hitting until sometime next gen.  But, hey, that's better than that other Microsoft "trilogy" Too Human which will be lucky to see even one title see the light of day this generation.

I will be shocked if the almost-two years old Xbox 360 doesn't have a successor on the market well before another 7-8 years.

There's some new video as part of the 1Up Show here.  The Mass Effect stuff starts at 18:19, and includes a look at the character generation and some new (AFAIK) shots of the interface for controlling party members.  You can access a circular menu that contains a set of icons for each party member, presumably either customizable or representing that character's most common actions.  You can then choose one of the options and that character will perform it.  The system seems like a nice step up from the somewhat clunky action selection of KOTOR.
