More than anything else in the demo, just exploring the galaxy map got me excited.  I love the exploration part of RPGs, and a space-based game with tons of things to explore is exactly what I want.

I just hope you have a little lander that you can use to land on random planets and collect their minerals. And then, maybe some planets have like differenting amount of lightening or earthquakes that you need to avoid with your lander. But perhaps at some point you can meet an alien race of traders who will sell you modifications to your landers so that the lightening and earthquakes (oh, and maybe fire) don't do as much damage. But to pay the traders you need to do something like collect biological data from stunning various unintelligent life on the various planets.

Yeah, something like that would be cool.

Maybe it was the stream then (though the audio didn't stutter) but don't they see the inherent contradiction in "totally smooth" and "occasional stutters"?

Ok, I was there.  Let me comment - the framerate was perfectly fine.  What Kotaku apparently lacks is the language to describe what was going on.

There was visual mip-map popping.  That is to say that textures came in as basic, then mid-range, then advanced.   This happened a bit throughout the demo and there can be several reasons for it, but the biggest that comes to mind is media.  The debug kit can read burned discs, but silvers (finals) are always smoother with streaming things to the screen.  A good example is FMV which often looks like it stutters, or this example above.  Talking to the Docs from Bioware, this isn't a problem at all and won't be visible in the final game.

Gamespot has a 20 minute gameplay demonstration:

http://uk.gamespot.com/video/930279/6174539/mass-effect-stage-demo-1#

Looks awesome with the caveat that the framerate definitely has issues and the game is extremely choppy as a result.  Almost to the point where I'm surprised Bioware let them show it without making huge disclaimers that it isn't final code.

WOW at the environments and atmosphere though.  Also pretty impressed by how they hide the load times make it much more seamless than their games.  I am a little concerned though that the amount of "unique" worlds that can be visited may lend themselves to a sort of cookie cutter experience like the Elder Scrolls series' dungeons with some minor variations in tilesets.  Hopefully that won't be the case.

The Gamespot interviewer goes over the line into raving lunatic fanboy mode enough to make me a little uncomfortable but it's still an awesome video.

Ok, I just watched this video and it is clear to me that he peed on the rug under the desk.  *shakes head*   I may need to build a studio and conduct interviews...

okay i didnt actually see this link earlier,so i have just watched it...i was getting just as excited as the guy behind the desk was.....8minutes 30 seconds when they showed just how big the universe you could explore in got me drooooling, and then they panned out,and then again...i was like 'woah'(no keanu reeves impression intended)

and then in the vehicle on that planet that looked like james bond island seen in the man with the golden gun, only it was very stormy in the game

i think i will pick up that novel now

EDIT: i am also thinking that this commander shepard from mass effect looks a bit like Matthew fox...or should i say Jack shephard from Lost, when i first saw the character and heard the name thats who i thought of

So can you visit any of the stars that you can see in the map or only those with a circle around it?

Only the ones with a circle.  So essentially, this system isn't that different than, NWN2, or a lot of other RPGs that have a overworld map, then lots of locations to go to.

The main difference is the scale and detail that these locations have.

They also mention how you'll actually travel between these worlds, and like other RPGs, you get interrupted during travel by special encounters.

Should we be worried about the degree of hype this game is getting?  With this much expectation, and it will only keep building, could we be setting ourselves up for a let-down?

History would say yes..........But you never know, this could be the one that actually lives up to the extreme hype its getting...

In any case its fun looking forward to a game..........kinda like Christmas when you're a kid...

The answer must be no. If it's a let down, the gaming universe will implode.  Mass Effect is our only hope.

Anyways, that vehicle gameplay looks kind of interesting.  I didn't realize they were going to have stuff like that-  I wonder if you can actually run over enemies.

The combat (from the video) seemed a little simplistic. I'm hoping there's some depth that the footage doesn't show.

I think he's referring to the footage at Gamespot, it's a 20 minute video but I'm not definite where the combat was- maybe around the 13 minute mark.....

Oh, thought it was something else.  This demo was slightly different than the one we got behind closed doors.  There was a MAAAAASSIIIVEE spoiler in that demo to demonstrate some of the 'damned if you do, damned if you don't' far-reaching decisions you'll have to make.  If you guys really want to know, I can spoiler it.  My point though is that they really didn't focus too much on combat for this demo.

Why does their combat vehicle have brake lights?  Is there a planet out there that has heavy traffic and you need the lights to prevent an alien SUV from tailgating your ass on the Bezonea thruway?

Player feedback, it gives you another indicator besides speed (which is hard to portray) that your vehicle has responded to the button to stop.

Not to mention while not trying to save the Galaxy, you could theoretically be moving the vehicle around in normal traffic to get from one military base to another.

obviously the ship commander was too cheap to go for the 'brake lightless' version.
