Played a little bit last night - the framerate for battles was poor.  I don't like that at all.  Plus they, at least for me, seemed like they took a long time.  Decent voice work from what I heard... but yeah, the battle system really didn't do anything for me   icon_frown

I downloaded the demo, started it up, didn't want to have to go through a tutorial just to play it, quit and deleted it.

Tutorial?  There really isn't one at all.  There are some guys standing in a room that will explain how to play if you want but it's completely optional.  Go right through the door and you're in a dungeon playing the game.

Or at least that's what happens if you start with The Fortress.  Don't know what happens in The Ruins though.

Oh, I though they wouldnt let me through the door.  Oh well, those kinds of games usually aren't my cup of tea anyway.

For what it's worth, the boss battle at the end of the demo is a lot more fun than the brief dungeon crawling portion.  Pretty mild demo overall, but as everyone pointed out both the Dragon's Quest 8 and FF12 demos were the same way...

There's a tutorial?  I didn't see one.  I haven't played a JRPG since FF7 and I was able to figure things out pretty easily.

I played about 20 mins of the Fortress and I haven't made up my mind if I want this game or not.  After playing and enjoying Enchanted Arms I just couldn't excited about Blue Dragon.  Maybe, I'll rent it to decide, but you can put me in the 'meh' category

If you talked the the people in the opening area they will give you a overview of the controls.  I skipped most of it as well and figured things out on my own

Yeah, that is what I was referring to.  I guess it isn't a full-on tutorial and I didn't know I could skip through it.  Oh well, I don't feel like I missed much.

Well I finally had a chance to play for a bit tonight.  It was fairly standard as far as gameplay.  I was disappointed in the pure turn based combat, I'm tired of that to be honest.  But, overall it held my interest enough to want to play the full game.  I liked the graphics, despite the horrible slowdowns.  Honestly at this point, I'm so desperate for a decent rpg outside of oblivion on the 360 I'll probably snatch this up.

Then why bother downloading the demo? If you dislike RPGs but download a demo anyways, start the game not really caring enough about it to even go through the tutorial, and then continue to make multiple negative comments then it's obvious you have no intention of liking or attempting to enjoy the game.

Why are people on here taking it personal that I deleted the demo?  I downloaded it because I download all the demos and I delete a lot of them within 5 minutes of playing time.  Also, like Depward said, I am not a huge RPG fan. Not to mention, I was running low on patience the night I booted it up.  It isn't a big deal, trust me.

EDIT:  removed personal attacks.

Because you basically came in the thread discussing the game to say, "it sucks," even though you didn't try the game and don't even like the genre.

I just played a bit...I wish I had some clue what I was doing, but it seemed alright.
I have a feeling I might not like the combat as much as Enchanted Arms, but we'll see.

i'll echo these comments.  while the basic gameplay is pretty intuitive, i didn't feel like i was getting to experience the full scope of the combat system just because there is so much to choose from and little explanation in the demo.  i played the Fortress area, and my lvl 50 characters had a ton of spells and skills immediately available.  i wound up arbitrarily trying out different things just to see what would happen...some worked well and some didn't.  i'm guessing the full game will be more manageable because you'll acquire skills/spells/items over time and become familiar with them all as you go though.  while the combat system has some interesting aspects, it's not terribly original and does seem less interesting than Enchanted Arms.  i've never gotten deeply into JRPGs in the past because i like fighting to be more interactive.  the combat in eA really grabbed me, however, due largely in part to the importance of positioning your characters...battles played out in a chess match style as you chose your best attacks and tried to out-maneuver the enemies to maximize your attack or defense.  BD seems to follow the typical JRPG method of just picking attacks and watching the pretty pictures trade blows...but at lesat the keep the pace up pretty well.  the combat in Blue Dragon does have a few nice features though, like the number of abilties/spells at your disposal and the chance to power up your attacks by delaying a character's turn.  i also really like having the Field Barrier...skipping battles with enemy types you've already defeated goes a long way to limiting monotony in this type of game.  i'm guessing there's an experience/reward penalty for doing so, but i couldn't quite figure out the details in the demo.

from a graphical standpoint, Blue Dragon is pretty incredible.  i'm not a huge fan of that anime style in tv shows, but it seems to work really well for the game and looks fantastic in HD.  there are a few framerate glitches, but i never thought it interfered with the game enough that i'd be worried about it.  if performance in the Fortress is as bad as it gets, i don't think it's bad enough to really hurt the overall game.  i'll be going back to try out the Ruins area later and am curious how it compares...

overall, the demo has increased my curiosity about Blue Dragon a little...was not extremely excited about it before because it looked very juvenile, but the little bit of story gleaned from the Fortress was interesting.  i was a little surprised when i faced off against Nene and the main character actually called him a bastard.  the real deciding factor for me will be the quality of the story in the end.  i've been playing a lot of storyless games lately (Forza2, DiRT, GH2) and have really started to miss a good storyline with my gaming.  BD will have to get pretty favorable reviews for me to pick it up early on considering that it's competing against games like Mass Effect and Bioshock.

Is there such a thing as Tanking in a turn-based J-rpg?

Won't the mob on its turn just strike who it wants?
How would tanking work?

Do they have certain spells that make the mob hit them on the next round?

i'll echo these comments.  while the basic gameplay is pretty intuitive, i didn't feel like i was getting to experience the full scope of the combat system just because there is so much to choose from and little explanation in the demo.  i played the Fortress area, and my lvl 50 characters had a ton of spells and skills immediately available.  i wound up arbitrarily trying out different things just to see what would happen...some worked well and some didn't.  i'm guessing the full game will be more manageable because you'll acquire skills/spells/items over time and become familiar with them all as you go though.  while the combat system has some interesting aspects, it's not terribly original and does seem less interesting than Enchanted Arms.  i've never gotten deeply into JRPGs in the past because i like fighting to be more interactive.  the combat in eA really grabbed me, however, due largely in part to the importance of positioning your characters...battles played out in a chess match style as you chose your best attacks and tried to out-maneuver the enemies to maximize your attack or defense.

Very well said. I think that sums up alot of what I was thinking much more effectively than I could have. There were too many tactical options available and no idea what to pick or why. There are some neat things clearly, like the field skills and the ability to do stuff like fight multiple groups at once.

Is there such a thing as Tanking in a turn-based J-rpg?

Won't the mob on its turn just strike who it wants?
How would tanking work?

Do they have certain spells that make the mob hit them on the next round?
Most often it's just a front row/back row thing, where the mob is more likely to attack the front row, but there are lots of times where a character has active and/or passive abilities to block damage for teammates.

Well I played the Fortress level and beat everything including the final boss battles fairly easily.
I hope they just gave you high level characters to play with comparative to this section or else this will game will be a walkthrough.
The good part is that you will be able to pick up the game fairly easily if you have played games like FF

The background scenery is very basic and plain but the characters and animations look great.

The character dialogue was very low for some reason, but I didn't really look to see if this was adjustable.

I am a sucker for RPGs so I will be getting this, I just hope there is a bit more challenge, but not extreme like NG Black controller chucking difficulty.

Try it on hard-if you get through more than the first three groups of mobs on the southwest path I bow to you. The Japanese gamers said the game was a tad too easy and needed a hard mode-and by golly, the hard mode is hard.

ooh! Two modes of difficulty? I'm getting more eager for this to release already. nod

I didn't bother with the demo. In fact, I don't remember the last time I played a demo for a jrpg that was actually representative of the final product. Heck, I disliked every one I've tried, but went on to love most of the final products despite their warts if they had them (I'm looking at you, FF8).

i liked the demo, enjoyed it but was a little overwhelmed with how to do this, and how to do that...who was the healer of the group, who was the tank..etc

so,hopefully when actually starting from the beginning i can get to learn how everything is and enjoy it even more

still very much looking forward to this

well what i noticed was i would do all the group with normal attacks, and it seemed that the funny cat type character(far left) was a lot stronger,he always did in the 300s worth of damage on the boss battle, while the star of the show(second from left) was average,he did a little less than the cat type thing while the others, seemed a lot less stronger, they were doing 70-80 damage(this is all without the building up strength thing)

though i only had a quick half hour,so this weekend i can hopefully fully get to grips with the demo

My cat guy kept getting the kitty litter knocked out of him.  All the baddies went after him hard.

Yeah I got to the boss fight on hard.  All of my charicaters got killed before I could even take a turn.  The one char auto rezed, then got killed on the next round.  Fun stuff.

Maybe they need a difficulty between normal and hard?

played a lot more today and yesterday, somethimes i am enjoying it and think this is great, other times i am thinking that its a load of bollocks(yes i am talking about encounters that kill your team straight away when you havent even had a shot)

good points
lookslike there is a wide world to explore
graphics are cute and do the job
although i dont fully undertsand the whole menu sytsem yet,it doesnt look like its anything too complicated...i hope

bad points
whats with the bad guys(single or in a group) just having 4-5 free hits on you as soon as a match starts?,you go in with full health, when it is eventually your go,you have to struggle to stay alive let alone defeat the bad guys
looks like grinding is gonna take up 90% of you game time<<<no shit
the world map is about as useful as a chocolate fireman

i dunno, when i do get the game i am gonna level like crazy, because the situation the demo has put us in,isnt exactly a good one, level 33 on the forest demo,i would say isnt high enough(IMO)

oh,and i killed the 5 headed snake eventually,i had to keep restarting the fight until his petrify only caught one of my group, then after a few strikes i used the corperal thing(that seems like its the summon option)and then that kicked its ass, after the snake you appear in front of this pissed off old tree......i managed to knock 10k worth of HP off it,and then it still killed me....as i said,it really doesnt feel as though i am the right level for these encounters

on the other level i got passed the first floor with the group of bad guys, then on the second level i got easily killed again, and i just didnt have the energy to do it all again

dissapointed in a few aspects of the game, but will still buy the game and hopefully prepare my self more(Bioshock is out the same day,so i am not expecting to get that far into BD anyway that weekend)
