So my refurb 360 has not exactly been a shining example of reliability.  Ever since I got it, it has had a propensity to lock up at the drop of a hat, regardless of what game was in it.  After it locked up FOUR TIMES last night during games of NHL, I finally gave up and decided to request a new coffin this morning.

I hate you, 360.

Good luck with that then. Raise hell about it and maybe you'll get a new one back with the Zephyr boards.

honestly Gellar where have you got your power brick?...mine used to do it all the time until i moved the power brick well away from the 360,i made sure nothing was behind the console and i had plenty of space, that was january 2006 and i havent had a problem since

when the power brick was behind my 360,it was like putting two magnets together, sending everything mental, and it would cut out 3 or 4 times a day

i did have to send it back in august 2006,but that was because i broke the disc tray icon_frown

Two shelves below the 360.  Never given me a problem before... it's the same spot it was with the previous 360 which didn't have an issue until it went RRoD one day.

Sorry to hear about your issues.

I was looking at getting a hockey game and noticed NHL 08 has alot of complaints about it freezing during play (it sounds like alot of EA Sports 08 line is apparently having the issue)- are you sure it wasn't the game?

Well... NHL does freeze more often than most of my other games, but literally everything I've played on the 360 over the past 3 months has a decent chance of freezing.  It was by FAR most prevalent in Forza 2 (froze every day), but it has frozen in Bioshock, GH2, and DiRT as well.

Sorry, man.  The new unit should be reliable for you - the manufacturing processes have improved considerably.

Yeah hopefully.  It also helps that I'm going to London for a week and maybe I can get it shipped off by then.  That's 1 less week without it.  Maybe I'll even get it in time for Mass Effect.

You all may be amused to know that I was at a football game with someone today who works at IBM... on the 360 CPUs. I gave him a lot of shit about how I hoped he was working on the new cooler ones. He told me the free 360 he got had the RRoD and he had to send it in for repairs. I was not exactly shocked.

It's not the CPU that's been the problem.  It was the GPU.

If that's so then why is everyone excited about the new CPU's? Will these make any difference if the GPU is the heat problem?

They are also replacing the GPU, but the new cpu/gpu aren't available yet.
On a disturbing note, there's anecdotal evidence that the refurb process is still having issues.
I've had some customers lately that have gotten refurbs that died within a week.

If they are still sending customers back time bombs, that's pathetic.

At this point, I can't imagine why anyone who is aware of the 360's problems would buy one anywhere but one of the price clubs that offers a lifetime warranty.
