Interesting article posted over on Kotaku, " Let’s Rank The Civilization Games, Best To Worst". I think I agree with his rankings, do you?

honestly, in terms of playtime I spent on each one I'd rank them:
1,2,4,5,3.
1 and 2 are so far back I cannot remember which I spent more time on so they coule either be tied or the positions reversed, but in comparison 4 is so far in the distance neither of them can see it. I tried to like 3, but IIRC it had some serious bugs upon release so it got traded in pretty quickly.

Civ 2 last?! Blasphemy. The correct order is 2, 4, 5, 3. I never got around to trying the original so I have to abstain on its placement.

No, no, correct order is 4, 2, 5, 1, 3. Civ 2 is great, but is just plain hard to play today. 4 carried over the best ideas from 2 and 3 and put them together. 5 is great now that it's patched up. 1 is still a great game, but just not as good as the others. 3 is crap on a cracker and still makes me angry.

I'm ok with swapping 2 & 4. They're really close in my book.

Civ 4 is one of my, maybe my most favorite game. I'd rank them 4, 2, 1, 3. Never played 5, haven't read anything about it that makes me want to. I'm just not sure how you can top 4. 2 and 1 are old and distant memories, though I do remember Civ 2 is the only disc I ever lost. I did find it years later in the Interstate '76 box I think. Civ 3 was not all that great. The Ai made me swear.

Can I just vote for Alpha Centauri instead? I played that first and all the civ games have been a disappointment in comparison.

CIV II is in my top 10 all time. I may have tried Civ III, but the series never captured my attention or interest much after II.
I upgraded my PC for Alpha Centauri, and was totally disappointed by it.

In terms of total playtime, it would be 1&2 and Alpha Centauri. I have 5 but I haven't spent a lot of time with it.

OK, you can offically vote for Alpha Centauri in this thread if you wish And I consider it second highest, right behind Civ 4 in my list.

what about the Call to Power games, since they are technically Civilization without the name?

I've only played 3, 4 and 5, but of those I'd rank them 4, 5, 3. I remember heaps of positive buzz around 2, so I'm not surprised some consider it better than 4. I was very late to the party on 3 which I only got from Steam to play on an aging laptop. It was fully patched and included the Play the World expansion, so I didn't encounter too many bugs with it.

4 is a lot like 2, reborn and expanded, which is why they're neck'n'neck in my book. I like the (relatively) simple elegance of 2's game mechanics, and I like how 4 managed to make a more fleshed out (but more complicated) rendition of that.

I've never played a civilisation game, I only had Call to Power 2. But I liked it a lot. Was I foolish to like it and should I deny ever having played it?
