When playing a strategy or role-playing game, random map generation is basically a given. Making the map dynamic helps mitigate the monotony of playing the same map over and over again, and since in racing games you’re typically driving the same tracks over and over again, it makes sense to randomize the course.

Every time I read a press release, look at screenshots, or watch a video about this game, I can’t help but wonder what the heck is going on from a narrative perspective. I get the gameplay – melee combat with an emphasis on hand-to-hand combat. But who the heck is Father-mother and why are we trying to save him/her? Maybe it’ll all make sense once the game releases on April 30th.

In every new generation of Nintendo consoles, developers are faced with the challenge of how to make use of the quirks of the system’s controller. Some uses are genuinely innovative and intuitive, while others are uninspired and lack imagination. In the case of Splinter Cell: Blacklist, as showcased in this new gameplay trailer, there may be good reason to go with the Wii U version over a traditional controller.

New artwork from Grand Theft Auto V takes us to land and sea

Grand Theft Auto V is about five months away but we haven’t been hit by the marketing blitz just yet. A couple of trailers, some screenshots, some artwork… very conservative showing thus far. Continuing on its frugal streak, Rockstar has sent out two new pieces of artwork today featuring two of the game’s lead characters. Hey… it’s better than nothing I suppose.

Project Zone X pits Namco against Capcom against Sega

New Dark Souls 2 screens and box art will not kill you

Dark Souls 2 is well into development and, despite there being no word on a release date, we’ve been supplied with a healthy dose of excellent screenshots and the box art. Developer From Software is promising improvements across the board, particularly on the PC version which they admitted was shoddy at best.

New Ridge Racer title is going straight-to-DVD

Ridge Racer isn’t quite the esteemed series that it used to be, so perhaps the straight-to-DVD treatment is in order. Ridge Racer Driftopia will be a downloadable free-to-play title and is set to hit PS3 and PC later this year.

A really big screenshot sold me on Total War: Rome II

One thing I’ve noticed about myself in recent years is that I don’t get that feeling of giddiness as often as I used to over new games. Maybe it’s because these days every other high-profile game is a standard shooter or third-person action game and I’ve become desensitized towards them, or perhaps as I get older my tastes are simply evolving. Whatever the case, today I experienced that rare sensation of good old fashion, nerdy excitement… and all it took was a screenshot. A really, really big screenshot.

Zeno Clash II Steam date and details

Zeno Clash II has received an official Steam release date of April 30th, 2013 for $19.99. If you pre-order the game you get 10% off the sticker price and a free copy of the first game. They’ve even thrown in an incentive to buy multiple copies – a two-pack which will net you a 25% discount. There’s also a Deluxe Edition which will include the game’s soundtrack and digital art book for $29.99.

The console version of Diablo 3 will succeed in ways the PC version could not

Diablo 3 on the PC was wildly successful and sold a boat load of copies, but it was also wildly hated on for having server-related technical issues during its launch week, for requiring a network connection at all times, and for the real money Auction House which ushered a legitimate pay-to-win model into the game. Ironically enough, due to hardware limitations, the console version will not have any of that.

On a chilly night in Manhattan, press from around the world gathered at a Sony press event to witness the unveiling of the console maker’s next pursuit: The PlayStation 4. The event was a media spectacle, as some of the key players in the console’s development took to the stage to talk goals, services, hardware, and of course games. The reception was mixed, which sounds worse than it really is – this is a precarious time for the video game industry and no one can quite put their finger on what it’s going to take for the next round of top shelf consoles to succeed.

Resident Evil: Revelations is coming to bigger screens

I’m really not the biggest fan of portable gaming. It makes my neck and hands ache, the games just don’t look very good (I’m of the high-end PC ilk), and when I travel I’m usually not comfortable and I don’t like to game in discomfort, especially when mood is such an integral instrument of the experience. So, despite being a 3DS owner – I am, afterall, a mindless consumer who buys things he doesn’t end up using – and a massive Resident Evil fan, I skipped on Revelations .

Gaming on the PC has come a long way, it wasn’t long ago when you had to worry about whether or not the PC version of a game whose lead platform was a console was going to be broken or not. Thankfully, since the advent of Steam and the user-friendly effect it’s had on PC gaming as a whole, the case of the borked PC port is the exception rather than the rule. Case in point: Look at the difference in the quality between the ports of Resident Evil 4 and 5 – it’s night and day.
