I’m a huge fan of the original Puzzle Quest. While I sang its praises as loudly as I could, I’ve been disappointed by the many puzzle RPG hybrids that followed in its wake. The one title that has come close to the bar set by Puzzle Quest is Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes. None of the others need apply, including Puzzle Quest 2 and Galactrix–especially Galactrix. Fortunately, that may be about to change. Today I am excited to bring you a glimpse of Runespell: Overture, an upcoming puzzle RPG for PC that somehow manages to combine solitaire and poker within a beautiful framework.

Collapse: Devastated World Coming to US in 2012

Like action games with destructible environments? Swords? Guns? Aliens? Things going boom? Look no further than this trailer for Collapse. From Ukranian developer Croteam, Collapse has been released in Europe but US gamers will finally get their shot early next year.

Magical Drop V Dropping onto PC Later this Year

This is a long running series of puzzle games I haven’t played, but it looks similar to Bust-a-Move or Snood. One thing I do know: Arkedo is involved in the development of Magical Drop V, and I’m a big fan of their work, such as Nervous Brickdown and Big Bang Mini on DS. I would expect Magical Drop V to look cool at the very least.

Mercury Slides onto iOS, Gives XBLA & PSN a Hg

Classic rage-inducing puzzler Mercury Meltdown is heading for iOS later this year (pictured above). Fortunately, it has been redesigned to be more accessible and should work quite well, especially on the large iPad screen. An entirely new Mercury title, Mercury Hg will be available on XBLA and PSN.

Planet Crashers Crashing onto 3DS

Planet Crashers was previously announced for iOS and Facebook, but will apparently be making its way to Nintendo 3DS courtesy of veteran DS developer Renegade Kid. The screenshot and video are from the iOS version, but the visuals for this light action RPG look like a great fit for the 3DS.

Fractured Soul 3D Announced for 3DS

Previously announced for Nintendo DS, Fractured Soul is also being brought to the 3DS as Fractured Soul 3D by Australian developer Endgame Studios. This shooting platformer requires you to maneuver on both screens at once, similar to Harry Hatsworth and Chronos Twins. The screen above and the video are from the DS version of the game, but should give an idea of the style of play.

Runespell: Overture Battle Trailer

I’d never heard of Runespell: Overture until today, and now I’m dying to play it. This amazing looking puzzle RPG might draw comparisons to Puzzle Quest, but the combat is quite different. You and the monsters you are fighting each have a tableau of solitaire cards. You move the cards between stacks to build poker hands which serve as attacks while your opponent does the same. You also have an arsenal of spells and allies you collect as the game progresses to supplement your poker playing prowess. Runespell: Overture is due out on Steam for PC and Mac in July from developer Mystic Box. In the meantime, check out this trailer featuring the combat system.

EDF: Insect Armageddon Screenshots

The various armor types are on display from the jetpack to the heavier suits. There’s also a tank and a mechanized battle suit on display, both returning from EDF: 2017.

The sequel to one of my very favorite games this console generation hits store shelves in three weeks, and looking at the newest footage I couldn’t be happier. Earth Defense Force 2017 was an homage to the monster movies I grew up with, complete with ridiculous story, cheesy voice acting, and critters that looked like they must have a zipper somewhere. The twist is that you play one of those little dudes running around with a machine gun that is usually getting stomped on by Godzilla or Megalon.

Bastion Trailer Makes Wait for Summer of Arcade Longer

The 2011 XBLA Summer of Arcade is shaping up to be fantastic, with everything from Fruit Ninja for Kinect to Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet. It was announced earlier this year that the indie action RPG from Supergiant Games, Bastion, would be coming to XBLA, but we now know that it is also part of Summer of Arcade. Bastion is an isometric action RPG like Diablo or Torchlight that features beautiful hand-painted artwork. I can’t wait to see more of this one, but we’ll have to hold out until at least July 20, when the Summer of Arcade begins.

Kirby Wii Multiplayer Gameplay

Uncharted: Golden Abyss Gameplay

Rounding out our little Vitapalooza this fine Sunday, a hands-on session with the most highly anticipated title for the Playstation Vita so far, Uncharted: Golden Abyss. This is the game that is going to show off just what the Vita hardware is capable of in the early days of this new platform and is likely to be a major system seller. As you can see, even looking at this off-screen video, Golden Abyss looks simply amazing. I often compared the PSP to having a PS2 in your pocket in the past, and if Drake’s newest adventure from Sony Bend is any indication, the Vita is going to draw a lot of comparisons to having a PS3 in your pocket.

Hot Shots Golf Vita Gameplay

Hot Shots Golf Open Tee was a favorite of mine on PSP, so getting a chance to see the next generation version of the franchise for the Playstation Vita is a treat. The graphics look fantastic, and it seems like they aren’t forcing touch screen controls onto the player, if they prefer the traditional controls.

Cool stuff here, Modnation fans. Watch as a producer for MNR on Vita draws a track in seconds using the touch screen. The rear touch pad gets in on the act too for making scenery. There’s also some great news about user-made track availability when MNR Vita launches.

Ruin Footage is Must-See

I can’t help but compare Ruin to Torchlight, because they have a similar look. The thought of carrying a game like that around on a handheld is mind-blowing. Bear with the shaky-cam for a minute and you’ll be rewarded with a demonstration of how cool and easy Ruin’s ability to save to the cloud is, letting you switch almost instantly between playing on Vita and PS3. You’ll also get info on how setting up your own lair works as you progress through the game and about the cool-sounding rivals system which lets you attack the lairs of other players.
