Summer line-up detailed for Nintendo through Direct video

Not a whole lot to see here today, as Nintendo has released a few more specifics about some games that will be releasing for 3DS and Wii U this summer.

Nintendo showed off some video of the upcoming Sonic and Mario Winter Olympics game for the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. They also announced an exclusive deal with Sega for the exclusive next installment of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.

Nintendo Direct coming tomorrow

Well, it looks like the E3 hype train has started chugging, as Nintendo has just announced that they will be hosting a Nintendo Direct video tomorrow at 7 AM PST.

I wouldn’t get too excited, though, as this video looks to focus on upcoming summer releases for the Wii U and 3DS, rather than anything beyond that time frame. Still, Nintendo’s been known to throw in a few surprises here and there, and I’m sure they’ve got something up their sleeve other than some videos for games we’ve already seen.

The Passion of Ted Price: Insomniac, Fuse, and the love of video games

It’s a cloudy, chilly day in San Francisco — gorgeous, really — and Ted Price, CEO of Insomniac Games has spent most of it inside a dimly lit South of Market nightclub, working on the final marketing push for Fuse, their upcoming co-op shooter. It’s the day after the demo has been unleashed on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 to a skeptical public, and just a few weeks away from its May 28th release date. He looks visibly tired as the event begins to wind down, as we sit down to discuss Fuse, its development, and the unique set of hurdles it posed for him and his team.

Capcom confirmes Phoenix Wright 5 for the West, gets no objection from us

We here at Gaming Trend are pretty unanimous in our love for the Phoenix Wright series . They’re incredibly well-written, humorous little legal adventures, filled with puzzle solving, logical deduction, and the most colorful cast of characters ever beheld in a portable game. Needless to say, when we heard that Capcom was making a fifth entry, we were excited at the announcement, and a little saddened that there wasn’t a confirmation that it would hit North American shores. Today, our prayers have been answered, as Capcom has not only sent us some screens and a new trailer, but has confirmed its imminent Western release.

Luchadors, demons, and co-op — Q&A with the Guacamelee! devs

Guacamelee! was a surprise hit when it launched at the beginning of April, combining Metroidvania-style platforming and exploration, God of War-style combos, and a dash of Super Meat Boy-esque difficulty. As someone who thought incredibly highly of the game, I wanted to find out more about the process behind its development. So I tracked down Chris McQuinn and David Rusak, designers over at Drinkbox Studios, so they could shed some light on its Mexican roots, how they balanced two-player co-op, and more.

EA acquires rights to Star Wars license in “multi-year agreement”

Do you hear that? That’s the sound of millions of voices who suddenly cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced. Why’s that? In some incredibly big news, Disney has just announced, via starwars.com, that EA will be the sole owner of the Star Wars license, in a “multi-year, multi-title exclusive licensing agreement” with Disney Interactive and Lucasfilm Ltd.

XSEED Games, the American publisher for Suda 51′s latest trip Killer Is Dead, has sent us over a new trailer, giving the spotlight to the fairer sex. Meet the “Mondo Girls — Natalia, Scarlet, and Koharu. Also, apparently it’ll also take place in part on the moon? Sure, why not? Crazier things have happened. Be sure to hit the jump for the full video. Killer Is Dead will be released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 this summer.

Hulk-smash some plastic bricks in a new LEGO Marvel Super Heroes trailer

After the bang-up job TT Games have done with the DC franchise, their sights have turned toward Marvel, and are that much closer in filling their card in Popular Culture Franchise Bingo. Today, they’ve sent over a trailer showing off some of the super heroes you’ll use to save the world. The big ones seem to be present an accounted for, but I wonder if some of the lesser known heroes will show up. Alpha Flight, anyone? Hit the break for the full sneak peek.

Promised Wii U update is live, increases speed, fixes overscan issues, adds Virtual Console

Well, it’s finally here. The Wii U update that Nintendo promised in their last Direct video is live, increasing the overall speed and stability of many of the Wii U’s features and functions. It also fixes the rather annoying problem I had with the system when it first launched — some apps, like the Miiverse and store let me fix the screen size, while the rest of the system would just scan past the borders of my TV. Why EarthBound’s reemergence is important, not only for fans, but for Nintendo

On Wednesday, Nintendo threw a massive amount of information at us through one of their Nintendo Direct videos. In it, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata detailed a long list of upcoming release dates and new titles fans can expect in the coming months. There were a few surprises, to be sure, with a new 3DS Zelda game set in the same world as A Link to the Past, as well as a new Yoshi’s Island game.

Ubisoft gets rad with new Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon screens, Michael Biehn interview

Coming completely out of left field, Ubisoft surprised everyone with the raditude that is Blood Dragon, the upcoming stand-alone expansion to Far Cry 3. To hype everyone up for it, Ubisoft has released an interview with 80s action star and voice of protagonist Sergeant Rex Power Colt (I know, right?) Michael Biehn. They’ve also tossed us a few screenshots to go along with it. Check ‘em out below the break, and look for Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC May 1st for $14.99/1200 MSP. Wow. Just… wow. Every time I feel like I have a grasp on where Nintendo’s coming from, they throw out a curveball, surprising everyone. The biggest news from today’s Nintendo direct is the North American and European release of Earthbound on Wii U’s virtual console, as well as the announcement of the upcoming 3DS sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past. There were a ton of release dates and new titles to sift through, so read on, and find out exactly what Nintendo has in store for us this year.

What will you sacrifice to escape? — Soul Sacrifice preview

I’m going to come right out and say it — less than an hour in Soul Sacrifice, I wanted to throw in the towel.

I’ve never been able to wrap my brain around games like Monster Hunter — I don’t exactly have the patience to sift through layers upon layers of obtuse mechanics that are never truly explained within the context of the game. It takes a certain kind of person to wade through all of that to reach the layer of fun that lies at its core, and that person isn’t me. There are, however, an entire legion of dedicated fans that love these types of games, and Sony — after losing Monster Hunter to Nintendo — have brought on Mega Man co-creator Keiji Inafune to try and recapture the same magic. After spending a few hours with the title, I say with some trepidation that, while I’m starting to understand Soul Sacrifice’s brand of insantity, I’m still a bit uncertain about how I feel about where this game is going.

Splinter Cell: Blacklist coming to Wii U

While many companies aren’t bringing their games to Nintendo’s beleaguered console, Ubisoft has shown solidarity, and has just confirmed that Splinter Cell: Blacklist will be releasing day and date with the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC versions. Ubisoft’s digital lineup is looking solid

Michael Biehn. Power Glove. Rad neon lights. Ubisoft, you’ve got yourself one happy customer here.

The mega-publisher Ubisoft has just announced several new additions to their digial lineup for the next few months, and it’s looking pretty impressive. We’ve got the 1980s-drenched Far Cry 3: Blood Diamond, the HD re-release of cult classic Flashback, and Cloudberry Kingdom, a randomly-generated platformer. Why listen to me, though? I’ll let the descriptions speak for themselves.

EA “wins” The Consumerist’s “Worst Company In America” competition for the second year in a row

After a long, hard fought battle, and some rather deflective soul-searching, the public has declared EA to be the “Worst Company In America,” according to The Consumerist. EA defeated Bank of America in a landslide victory, with over 78% of the popular vote.

Europe typically doesn’t get a head start on us usually lucky Americans, more often than not being left out in the cold when it comes to localization. But Europe not only got one, but three different Nintendo published epic JPRGs, leaving us practically begging Nintendo to give them our money. After a long year, we’ve finally gotten the last of three highly anticipated Wii JRPGs (I know, right?), as XSEED Games is finally bringing Pandora’s Tower to us suffering Americans, and to celebrate, they’ve released a new trailer. If you’re a fan of Suda 51 games like I am, you appreciate the subtle nuances, the bold, yet understated satire, and… okay, let’s face it, you’re a fan of bat-sh*t insane game design and characters, aesthetics, and dialogue even more bonkers than that. It’s hard to exactly put into words what makes his games so inventive, so we’ve got a trailer — in English, no less — showing off exactly how insane his latest game, Killer Is Dead, is turning out to be. I ain’t afraid of no ghost — Nintendo Download: March 21, 2013

Nintendo’s sent over some details for this week’s upcoming downloadable games for Nintendo’s various platforms. To kick off the year of Luigi, we’ve got Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon — sequel to the GameCube launch game, and promising a larger, deeper experience with more mansions, more ghosts, and even multiplayer. You’ve also got Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity, a new entry to the Pokemon spinoff series. Both of these 3DS downloads will be available on Sunday, typically at midnight EST the eShop. A few other games round out this week’s downloads. Check out the break for the full list.
