One thing that’s been causing quite a stir around the gaming industry has been the gradual introduction of the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, which aims to provide gamers with the intense immersion that we’ve basically always dreamed about. Well, we’re one step closer to living in that “reality,” with new games announcing their upcoming compatibility with the set all the time. One such game, Strike Suit Zero, an indie title from development studio Born Ready Games, aims to take the indie space-sim market by storm with their contribution to the growing movement, with plans to release an Oculus-compatible version as early as this summer.

Ubisoft launched a new gameplay video today for the upcoming Rayman Legends entitled “20,000 Lums under the Sea,” which comes as a sea-salty follow-up to the very impressive “Mariachi Madness” that came out earlier this month. Like the previous video, this clip features some very endearing music, although it relies more on creative editing to give you a feel for the new level, as opposed to the straightforward level playthrough that was “Mariachi Madness.” In other words, this functions more like a traditional trailer, but it is no less entertaining to watch, and introduces some new costumes, including a Splinter Cell variant(!).

Treachery of the White Hand is the name of the latest content update released for Lord of the Rings Online, and it’ll feature a number of new areas for your adventuring pleasure throughout Middle Earth and beyond. In addition, the free download will provide revamped combat, “Hobbit presents”(!) that you get just for logging on each day, and VIP benefits that include your character getting to commission a custom portrait. I think it’d look great over the mantle, don’t you?

Ubisoft released a new trailer today for the upcoming sixth (don’t let the title fool you) installment of Assassin’s Creed, titled Black Flag’s True Golden Age of Pirates (try saying that five times fast with a mouth full of grog and hard-tack). The “Buccaneer Edition,” as it shall henceforth be known in my mind, has been marked for release on October 29th, 2013, and will continue in the vein of exploring downright awesome parts of history, including the Renaissance, and most recently, the American Revolution.

Activision-Blizzard sent out a press release today claiming that 1.3 subscribers to the insanely popular World of Warcraft decided they weren’t getting enough fresh air, and stepped out into a new realm known as “outside,” blinking in the hazy sunlight. Although it’s still by far the most popular game of its kind, with a peak of 12 million users having been achieved back in the heyday of 2010, many would attribute its recent decline to the fact that the majority of MMORPGs are now free-to-play, while WoW continues to charge a subscription fee.

EA released some new screenshots for their upcoming fourth installment of the Battlefield series, and let me be the first to say they look quite beautiful. I’ve been drooling over every crumb that has been released so far in connection with this title, although that’s not to say the PR team over at EA hasn’t been extremely generous, given the spectacular gameplay footage they released last month, along with a teaser trailer that puts all other teaser trailers to shame.

Renowned narcissist Katie Couric posted a tweet today in hopes of engaging gamers who were “upset” about an hour-long discussion of violent video games during her daytime talk show, Katie, yesterday. In the tweet, she challenged readers to post replies that elaborated on the positive qualities of violent games. The predictable backlash that ensued included a lot of salient points (guess from which side) that poked countless holes in the famed chatterbox’s position, and also shed some light on the stance of others who agreed with her.

Nintendo has been having some trouble shipping Wii U-nits lately, and by ‘some’ I mean a lot. Sales began slumping despite a strong start when the console came out last winter, with only about 400,000 sold so far in 2013, and a paltry 3.45 million (that’s including Japan, people) overall. It seems clear that gamers are having trouble getting onboard with the Wii sequel (at least, compared to Xbox and Playstation, which continue to rake in the cash), but Nintendo thinks they may have found the answer.

Ubisoft unleashed a beautiful new trailer for the upcoming platform adventure Rayman Legends today, which they’re calling “Mariachi Madness.” Let me be the first to tell you, this thing is a rollicking good time. The music, a Spanish guitar version of “Eye of the Tiger,”  makes this clip a ton of fun to watch, so one can imagine how enjoyable playing it will actually be.

Today Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced that starting on Wednesday, May 8th, DC comics buffs will be able to try their hand at the upcoming Infinite Crisis. A lot of people have probably been wondering how Activision plans on keeping Call of Duty topical, and I don’t think I’d be out of line if I said that creating Modern Warfare 4 would cause a great, big, collective yawn. The next installment of the monolithic franchise is titled Ghosts, and seems to draw heavily on the black-ops and crazy secret stuff that has resonated so well with fans of the series in the past.

A new TMNT game entitled Out of the Shadows is gearing up for a release that is mere months away, and today the gaming community received a new trailer filled with insight as to how this thing is actually going to look. At long last, Microsoft has pinned down the official reveal date for the next iteration of the Xbox console, which will take place on May 21st on their campus in Redmond, WA. The announcement will precede a bevy of further details, which the company has promised to disclose at the legendary E3 games conference in June. As yet, very few details have emerged about the upcoming system – no one even knows what it will be called yet, although “Xbox 720″ has been the most popular (and logical) guess so far.

A hotly anticipated top-down heist game that was slated to come out for Xbox Live has been delayed due to an undisclosed issue, as was reported this evening on the game’s official Facebook page. Monaco: What’s Yours is Mine looks to build on the success of the series’ first incarnation, Monaco a.k.a. Monte-Carlo, which took home top honors in 2010 (Grand Prize, Excellence in Design) at the Game Developer’s Conference Independent Gaming Summit. Despite huge expectations for this release, fans are rather unhappy about the last-minute letdown, although it is important to note that this will not affect the game’s release on Steam for Mac and PC.

A Reddit user broke news yesterday that Take-Two, the Darth Vader to Rockstar’s Luke Skywalker, had commissioned a live-action commercial for the hotly anticipated title, involving a real bang-up of a car chase through a backstreet lot in steamy Mexico City. The user, identified as ‘marcodj’, claimed that the shoot was going down in front of his office building; naturally, the thread spawned tons of glib Reddit-style comments like “wow the graphics are incredible!!!” and “I didn’t know it would be in 3D!!!”.
